Mark Darrah, the former BioWare executive producer who led work on Anthem, says CD Projekt is in “a really dangerous place” because the economics of making huge, highly polished AAA games are becoming fragile. His warning concerns a cost structure that magnifies small delays and quality failures—not an announcement that CD Projekt is insolvent or that a particular project has exceeded its budget.
What Darrah’s warning means
Darrah made the comments in an interview printed in the 500-page Summer Eternal Anthology and reported on October 16, 2026. He argues that three pressures now reinforce one another in top-end game production.
- AAA work is over-specialised. A modern game needs so many narrow disciplines that, in Darrah’s example, no single person can simply add a feature alone; at least five people may be needed to deliver one contribution. That increases payroll, management and coordination overhead.
- Schedule slippage is expensive immediately. A large team continues drawing salaries while content, technology and testing remain unfinished. The later a problem is discovered, the fewer inexpensive options remain.
- Revenue is concentrating at the top. Darrah predicts that a small set of mega-budget franchises may remain able to spend almost anything, while many games costing around $100 million will struggle to earn back their investment. That is his forecast, not an established industry statistic.
How much can one late month cost?
These are interview estimates, not audited CD Projekt figures or a published monthly burn rate:

|---|---|---|
| 500-person team running one month late | $5 million to $10 million | Mark Darrah, 2026, as reported by Stevivor |
| 200 developers paid $15,000 each | More than $2 million per month | Tim Willits, 2026, as reported by Stevivor; a staffing illustration rather than a CD Projekt cost disclosure |
The figures show why a delay can become a business problem even before marketing, platform fees or lost sales are considered. They should not be read as evidence that CD Projekt is spending either amount every month.

Why high-end games cost so much
Specialisation multiplies the team
AAA production divides work among design, engineering, animation, writing, audio, visual effects, user research, quality assurance, production and other disciplines. A decision in one area can create work in several others. Darrah’s point is not simply that there are more employees; it is that the dependencies between specialists make the project harder to change cheaply.
Late changes carry a penalty
When a core mechanic changes after environments, missions, cinematics and tools have been built around it, those assets may need to be revised together. A month of delay therefore represents continuing staff costs and can trigger rework across the project. The same structure applies to a late quality problem: fixing it may require changes to content that was already considered complete.
What CD Projekt has acknowledged
CD Projekt’s 2020 management report says AAA games require above-average development and marketing budgets. It also warns that an unsuccessful release, failure to meet quality expectations, technical problems or negative reviews can suppress sales and damage future earnings.

That disclosure supports Darrah’s general cost-and-execution argument, but it does not establish that CD Projekt is currently in a financial crisis. The filing does not prove that any named project has exceeded a specific budget, and it is not a confirmation of Darrah’s staffing estimates.
Why Anthem shapes Darrah’s credibility
Darrah’s warning comes from direct experience. EA’s 2018 official Q&A identified him as Anthem’s executive producer. The cooperative shared-world game, which also contained personal story content in the player’s hub, launched on February 22, 2019, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
In a 2025 retrospective, Darrah described the project’s decision-making relationship as “highly dysfunctional.” He said only one mission existed when he joined, and that the team repeatedly rebuilt that mission instead of testing a broader set of missions. By the time the resulting quality problem became obvious, there was too little time to fix it properly.

The flight system’s hidden cost
Darrah also used Anthem’s flight system to show how an appealing feature can affect an entire game. Flight changed environmental art requirements, combat balance, memory use, asset streaming, mission logic and narrative logic. A feature that looks like one design decision can therefore create obligations for several specialised teams.
“The thing is, games are made out of decisions. So if you aren’t making decisions, or if you’re constantly undoing the decisions that are made, you aren’t moving towards having a game.”
Mark Darrah, quoted by PC Gamer in a 2025 retrospective

His account is an experienced producer’s retrospective, not a complete independent audit of BioWare’s development. It nevertheless provides a concrete example of the mechanism he now says threatens large projects: indecision delays validation, while late decisions propagate through many departments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess the risk around a large AAA project
Darrah’s comparison is about exposure, not a claim that every publisher faces identical conditions. These are the questions that matter when evaluating a project of CD Projekt’s scale:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Risk axis | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Team size and specialisation | More specialists can raise quality and scope, but each cross-discipline change creates more coordination and rework. |
| Development and marketing budget | A larger investment requires stronger sales to recover costs and leaves less room for a weak launch. |
| Delay sensitivity | Every extra month keeps a large payroll active and may push marketing, platform or release plans. |
| Time to prove core missions or a vertical slice | Early playable breadth can expose systemic problems before the project is too expensive to redirect. |
| Product model | Live-service games depend on continuing content and operations; single-player games depend more heavily on a successful launch and subsequent sales cadence. |
| Downside of a quality miss | Technical problems or poor reviews can reduce launch sales and harm confidence in future releases. |
Nothing in the available evidence identifies a current CD Projekt project as having failed one of these tests. The framework explains why investors and players pay attention to schedule, scope and early demonstrations of the core game.

Could the market split into two tiers?
Darrah expects a small group of globally dominant franchises—including Grand Theft Auto, Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty and Battlefield—to retain the ability to spend at extraordinary levels. In his view, many other $100 million games will face a much harder task in earning back their budgets.
This is an analysis of where the market may go, not a verified two-tier industry measurement. It implies that scale alone will not protect a game: projects outside the strongest franchises may need tighter scope, earlier validation or a clearer path to repeatable revenue.
What the Anthem example teaches
- Make foundational decisions early. Repeatedly undoing decisions consumes time without increasing the amount of finished game.
- Test breadth, not just one showcase mission. A polished sample can hide weaknesses that appear when the full mission set is exercised.
- Trace feature consequences across departments. Flight affected art, combat, memory, streaming, missions and narrative; similar dependencies should be mapped before a feature is locked.
- Protect time for correction. Discovering a systemic problem late can make a technically fixable issue financially unfixable.
How to read the headline
“Dangerous place” describes the combination of large fixed costs, interdependent specialists, schedule exposure and uncertain sales—not proof that CD Projekt is failing today. Darrah’s dollar figures are estimates attributed to him and Tim Willits, CD Projekt’s filing establishes the general risk of expensive AAA production, and the two-tier prediction remains a forecast. The durable lesson is that ambitious scope must be matched by early decisions, broad testing and enough schedule margin to absorb mistakes.
