First work out which connection is failing: your phone joining Ring’s temporary setup network, the Ring app finding your home Wi-Fi, or the Ring device connecting to your home network and the internet. Those are separate steps with different fixes. Start with power, setup mode, phone proximity, Wi-Fi band and password; then follow the path below that matches the error.
What “the Ring network” means
During setup, a Ring device creates a temporary Wi-Fi access point for your phone. Ring explains, “The Ring wifi network is a wifi access point that appears when your device is in setup mode.” After the phone joins that network, the app asks you to select your household Wi-Fi and enter its password. If you cannot join the temporary network, troubleshooting differs from a device that cannot join your home Wi-Fi. See Ring’s setup troubleshooting.
Do these checks before troubleshooting an error
- Update the Ring app and your phone’s operating system, and have your home Wi-Fi password ready.
- Keep the phone close to the Ring device throughout setup.
- Put only one Ring device into setup mode at a time.
- Turn off any VPN on the phone while setting up.
- Confirm the device has power: charge its battery or check that its wired or plug-in power supply meets the model’s requirements.
- Check the setup light against the instructions for your exact Ring model; light patterns and reset procedures vary.
If your phone cannot find or join the temporary Ring network
- Confirm the Ring device is powered on and in setup mode, using the model-specific light pattern as your guide.
- On your phone, open Wi-Fi settings and look for a network beginning with “Ring-” or “Ring Setup.” On iOS, the app may prompt you to join it; on Android, the phone may connect automatically. If you select it manually, return to the Ring app afterward.
- If it still does not appear or the phone will not join, try setup with another mobile device.
- Power-cycle the Ring device. If that does not help, reset it only by following the instructions for your model, then try setup again.
If the Ring app cannot find your home Wi-Fi
This is a different failure: the phone has reached the temporary setup network, but the device is not finding the household network it needs to use.
- Move the Ring device closer to the router during setup. If the phone also cannot connect to that Wi-Fi from its current location, improve coverage before continuing.
- If your router shows separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try 2.4 GHz when 5 GHz is missing or unsupported by your Ring model. Some Ring devices support only 2.4 GHz; check your model’s requirements rather than assuming all Ring devices support the same bands.
- If coverage is weak where the device will be installed, an extender or mesh system may help. Ring names Chime Pro as an extender and eero as a mesh-router example. Consider these only when coverage is the issue: an extender may suit a weak spot, while mesh may be relevant when coverage problems affect multiple areas. Check compatibility with your existing router and consider placement and cost before buying.
If Ring rejects the Wi-Fi password
Check for a mistyped password by testing it on the phone: forget the household network in the phone’s Wi-Fi settings, then reconnect using the same password. If the phone cannot reconnect either, Ring advises contacting your internet provider.

A password error is not the same as an incompatible-network warning. Ring recommends WPA2 in its setup guidance and notes WPA3 incompatibility for certain listed devices; compatibility depends on the Ring model. Check the instructions for your model and the router’s security settings before changing anything.
If the network is marked incompatible
Ring describes an incompatible-network warning as an encryption compatibility issue rather than a weak-signal problem. For the devices covered by its guidance, Ring advises using WPA2-Personal and disabling PMF (Protected Management Frames) if that setting is available. Because compatibility varies by model, confirm the applicable instructions before changing router security. If you are unsure how to change these settings, ask your internet provider or router manufacturer.

If setup selects Wi-Fi but cannot reach the internet
- Connect a phone to the same Wi-Fi network and check whether it can access the internet. If it cannot, resolve the household connection problem first.
- Review router or firewall settings that could block the device. While diagnosing, disconnect extra Ethernet connections and leave the main internet link connected.
- Check whether more than one Wi-Fi router is active. Ring says multiple routers can cause connection problems; use one router or ask your provider or router manufacturer whether bridge mode is appropriate.
If a Ring device that worked before is now offline
For an existing device, use the recovery controls in the Ring app before resetting it. Ring’s offline-device guidance covers reconnecting a device and changing its network.

- Open the Ring app, select the device, and open its settings and Device Health.
- Choose Reconnect or Change Network, as appropriate, and follow the app’s prompts.
- Check the device’s power and signal. Restart the modem and router, then check whether the device reconnects.
- If the connection remains unreliable, try a guest network or another 2.4 GHz network if your device supports that band.
- Use a factory reset only as a later step: you will need to set the device up again.
