A galaxy can appear to lack a central black hole because it truly has none, because its black hole is too faint to detect, because gas and dust hide its activity, or because the object is displaced from the apparent center. A null observation is therefore not the same as proof of absence.

“No black hole” can mean several different things

Astronomers use “no central black hole” informally, but observations usually establish something narrower: no detectable signal in a particular data set. An X-ray image, for example, tests whether hot gas is radiating as it accretes. It does not directly count every black hole, including one that is inactive, heavily obscured or outside the telescope’s target position.

To claim that a galaxy probably lacks a central massive black hole, researchers must account for the black-hole masses the observation could detect, the distance and resolution of the data, background sources, observing time and the expected rate of accretion. If the number of missing sources remains larger than sensitivity effects alone predict, genuine absence becomes a stronger explanation.

Do all galaxies have a black hole at the center?

No. The best current evidence indicates that occupation is strongly related to galaxy mass. A 2025 study led by Fan Zou at the University of Michigan used Chandra X-ray observations to estimate how often galaxies contain central massive black holes. Its figures are population estimates for defined stellar-mass ranges, not a verdict on every individual galaxy.

Host-galaxy stellar mass Estimated black-hole occupation How to interpret it
About 108–109 solar masses About 33% Many galaxies in this low-mass range may not contain a central massive black hole; the percentage depends on the study’s sample and modeling.
About 1011–1012 solar masses Greater than 93% This is a reported two-sigma lower limit, indicating that central black holes are very common in massive galaxies.

The contrast is important. A massive galaxy with no obvious nucleus may still hide a difficult-to-see object, but a dwarf galaxy has a substantially higher prior probability of genuinely lacking a central massive black hole. The estimates do not establish that any named galaxy is empty.

Why a galaxy may look empty

1. It may genuinely have no central massive black hole

Low-mass galaxies are the clearest setting in which true absence is plausible. The Chandra analysis compared the observed number of nuclear X-ray sources with the number expected after allowing for the fact that smaller black holes usually accrete less efficiently and therefore shine less. The researchers found an additional deficit in low-mass systems beyond the deficit expected from faint accretion alone. They interpret that residual shortage as evidence that many small galaxies never acquired a central massive black hole.

This conclusion is statistical. It describes the likelihood of black-hole occupation across a population. It cannot identify the status of an individual dwarf without independent evidence about that galaxy’s mass, nucleus and possible off-center objects.

2. A black hole may be present but accreting very little

A black hole is not normally visible by its event horizon. Much of the radiation astronomers use comes from gas that becomes extremely hot as it falls inward. If little gas reaches the black hole, the accretion flow can be too dim for an X-ray telescope.

Lower-mass black holes are especially difficult in this respect. They generally capture less material, and their emission can fall below an instrument’s sensitivity threshold. A quiet object can therefore produce no conspicuous central point source while still exerting gravity on nearby stars or gas.

3. Gas and dust can block the emission

Material around the nucleus can absorb or scatter radiation before it reaches us. NASA summarized a study estimating that about 35% of supermassive black holes are heavily obscured by gas and dust. In the most obscured cases, even low-energy X-rays can be blocked.

That figure describes the fraction of supermassive black holes estimated to be heavily obscured; it is not the percentage of galaxies without black holes. Obscuration also depends on viewing direction and wavelength, so a dark X-ray image does not necessarily mean that every form of nuclear activity is absent.

4. The black hole may not be at the apparent center

The optical center of a galaxy is not guaranteed to contain every massive compact object associated with it. A merger can displace a black hole, and dynamical interactions can leave it wandering through the stellar body or halo. Simulations and reviews discuss such off-center black holes, particularly in dwarf galaxies.

A displaced object may be even harder to detect if it has moved into a region with little gas. A search restricted to the brightest nucleus can miss it. This is a possible explanation for selected galaxies, not a universal way to explain every non-detection.

5. The observation may not test the relevant signal

Every instrument has a finite sensitivity, angular resolution and field of view. Distance can make a source too faint; a short exposure can leave it buried in background noise; and diffuse stellar or gas emission can confuse a point source. An X-ray observation primarily constrains luminous accretion, while a gravitational search asks a different question: whether a compact mass is influencing nearby matter.

What the Chandra study actually measured

NASA reported that the team analyzed more than 1,600 galaxies observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory over more than two decades. The sample ranged from systems with more than ten times the Milky Way’s stellar mass to dwarfs containing less than a few percent of the Milky Way’s mass.

Chandra can reveal a central black hole when infalling gas produces detectable X-rays. Massive galaxies commonly showed clear nuclear sources. Low-mass galaxies often did not. The researchers then modeled how many black holes would be missed simply because smaller objects accrete less and are fainter.

The key inference came from the remaining shortfall. If faint accretion explained all the missing detections, the predicted and observed numbers would align. Instead, the analysis found fewer low-mass nuclear sources than that model expected. The authors regard the extra deficit as evidence for a lower occupation fraction in small galaxies. Exact values depend on the sample selection and sensitivity corrections, so the percentages should not be treated as a universal rule.

Lead author Fan Zou said, “It’s important to get an accurate black hole head count in these smaller galaxies.” Co-author Elena Gallo summarized the interpretation: “We think, based on our analysis of the Chandra data, that there really are fewer black holes in these smaller galaxies than in their larger counterparts.”

Method What a positive result shows What a non-detection leaves open
X-ray observations Hot, accreting gas near the nucleus A quiet, faint or obscured black hole
Radio and other nuclear wavelengths Jets or other emission associated with accretion An object with no strong radio output or an unusual spectrum
Stellar dynamics Stars moving under the influence of a compact central mass A mass too small for the available spatial resolution or a nucleus dominated by ordinary stars
Gas dynamics Orbital motions requiring a concentrated mass Insufficiently resolved or disturbed gas
Microlensing Temporary bending and magnification of background starlight by a compact object No suitable background alignment during the monitoring period
Wide-field imaging An off-center nucleus, compact source or displaced object A dark object that emits little or no detectable light

A practical sequence

  1. Define the target. Record the galaxy’s distance, stellar mass, morphology and the black-hole mass range that the planned observation could detect.
  2. Search the nucleus for accretion. Use X-ray data and, where available, radio or infrared observations. Treat a non-detection as an upper limit on activity at those wavelengths.
  3. Check for obscuration. Compare multiple wavelengths because gas and dust can suppress low-energy X-rays while allowing other signatures to emerge.
  4. Measure motions. Obtain high-resolution stellar or gas kinematics and test whether a compact central mass is required after accounting for the surrounding stars.
  5. Examine the wider system. Search beyond the optical center for displaced nuclei, compact sources and halo objects that a nucleus-only analysis would miss.
  6. Consider lensing when appropriate. A compact object can reveal itself by bending and magnifying light from a background star, even when it emits almost nothing.
  7. Combine the constraints. Distinguish “no detected accretion” from “no black hole in the mass and location range that the observations exclude.”

Can a black hole be outside the center?

Yes. A merger can leave a black hole offset from the galaxy’s light distribution, and gravitational interactions can cause a massive object to wander. The farther it is from dense gas, the less likely it is to produce an obvious accretion signal. In a dwarf galaxy, an off-center black hole may therefore be both dynamically subtle and electromagnetically dark.

Finding one requires surveying the galaxy and, in some cases, its halo rather than placing a single aperture on the brightest nucleus. Evidence might include a compact off-center X-ray or radio source, an unusual stellar-motion pattern, a displaced nuclear cluster or a lensing event. None of these signatures is automatically decisive; ordinary stellar sources and merger debris can mimic some of them.

What the result says about black-hole origins

The occupation pattern matters because it constrains how the first massive black holes formed. One possibility is direct collapse: a massive gas cloud in the early universe collapses into a seed already thousands of times the Sun’s mass. Another is growth from stellar remnants, which begin much smaller and must accumulate mass over time.

The Chandra study’s authors argue that a lower occupation fraction in small galaxies is more consistent with direct-collapse seeds forming preferentially in the most massive early galaxies. If massive seeds were common everywhere, a larger share of today’s dwarf galaxies might be expected to retain central black holes. This is an interpretation that informs formation models, not a final resolution of the seed debate.

How to read a “missing black hole” claim

  • Ask what was actually measured: light from accretion, gravitational motion or lensing.
  • Check the host mass: occupation is expected to differ sharply between dwarf and massive galaxies.
  • Check sensitivity: determine which black-hole masses, luminosities and distances the observation could exclude.
  • Check the search area: a nucleus-only image cannot rule out an off-center object.
  • Check for obscuration: gas and dust can hide low-energy X-rays.
  • Prefer combined evidence: agreement among emission, dynamics and lensing provides a stronger inference than one absent signal.

The most defensible conclusion is usually specific: a galaxy shows no detectable central accretion at the observed sensitivity, or its data favor a low probability of hosting a central massive black hole. Those statements preserve the distinction between an observational limit and a physical absence.
