You may not need an iPad if your laptop already handles everything you do. The best reason to add one is to get a different kind of device: a touch-first screen for reading, handwriting, drawing, and marking up documents—or, if you own a compatible Mac, a companion display and a set of Apple cross-device features.
Whether that is worth the extra cost depends on the tasks you would actually move to the tablet. An iPad is not automatically a productivity upgrade, and it does not replace a laptop for every app or sustained computer task.
What can an iPad do that a laptop may not suit as well?
The clearest distinction is how you interact with each device. A laptop is built around a keyboard and pointer; an iPad puts a touch screen and, with a compatible Apple Pencil, handwriting and drawing at the center. That difference matters when the task itself benefits from writing or marking directly on the screen.

Handwriting, sketches, and document markup
Apple documents Apple Pencil workflows for drawing and marking up PDFs, screenshots, and images. On iPadOS 26, Apple’s Preview app can view and edit PDFs and images, including Pencil markup and AutoFill for PDF forms. Those features can make a tablet a practical fit for reviewing documents, annotating course material, sketching ideas, or completing a form by hand.

These are capabilities, not proof that every person will work faster on a tablet. If you rarely write or draw by hand and already manage documents comfortably on your laptop, the touch interface may not justify buying another device.
Reading and touch-first use
An iPad can also be useful when you want to read or interact directly with content without setting up a laptop workspace. Consider where and how you would use it in your routine: a tablet is most valuable when its form and touch input solve a real inconvenience, not simply because it is portable.

Can an iPad replace a second monitor?
If your laptop is a compatible Mac, Apple Sidecar can extend or mirror the Mac desktop on an iPad. That gives you another screen for a reference document, chat, or other window while you work on the Mac. Apple also supports using Apple Pencil with Sidecar for drawing in Mac apps and marking up PDFs, screenshots, and images; pressure and tilt work only in apps with advanced stylus support.

Do not count on it as a second-monitor solution for a Windows laptop. Before buying an iPad for a Mac setup, check Apple’s current Sidecar requirements for your exact Mac and iPad models and operating-system versions.

What does an iPad add if you already own a MacBook?
Besides Sidecar, Apple’s Continuity features let compatible Apple devices share or hand off certain work. Apple’s guide includes AirDrop, Universal Clipboard, Handoff, Continuity Sketch, Continuity Camera, and Universal Control, as well as Sidecar. Universal Control lets you use a Mac’s keyboard and pointer across nearby Apple devices; the other features support different ways to move content or continue tasks.
These features have minimum requirements, and some require Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Check Apple’s current compatibility information before treating them as a reason to buy: the feature name alone does not establish that your particular Mac and iPad will work together.

If your laptop runs Windows, the iPad can still be useful as a standalone touch-and-Pencil tablet. The Apple Mac features above do not apply, and the exact Windows-to-iPad file-transfer and companion setup is a separate compatibility question to verify for your needs.

Don’t base the decision on the outdated assumption that an iPad cannot manage windows or work with files. Apple’s June 9, 2025 iPadOS 26 announcement describes a windowing system, expanded file-management features, and Preview for PDFs and images. Apple also announced new audio and video workflows. These are Apple’s descriptions of the release, not independent performance tests.
Best Value
The more useful question is whether your specific apps and tasks fit iPadOS. Identify the software you rely on, the files you handle, and any work that depends on your laptop’s operating system or peripherals. A tablet can complement a laptop without replacing it; adding a keyboard case changes how you type, but does not by itself make every laptop app or workflow available.
Is an iPad worth the extra cost?
Count the whole setup, not just the tablet: you may also want an Apple Pencil, keyboard, cover, or stand. Accessories add cost and require compatibility checks, so begin with the task you want to improve and add only what that task needs. Current prices vary by model, accessory, region, and date; check local pricing before deciding.
One useful test is to name a recurring job you would do on the iPad that is awkward on your laptop—such as annotating PDFs by hand, sketching, or using Sidecar with a compatible Mac. If you cannot identify one, or if your laptop already handles it well, the second device may go unused.
Who is most likely to benefit from owning both?
- Readers and students: You regularly read documents or course material and want to mark them up or write notes directly on the screen.
- People who draw or sketch: Pencil input suits work that benefits from direct drawing, provided your apps and devices support the features you need.
- Mac owners who need another screen: Your specific Mac and iPad meet Sidecar requirements, and an additional display would help with your actual work.
- People who value touch-first use: You have recurring tablet tasks that are more convenient on a touch screen than on a laptop.
If none of those describe your routine, keeping the laptop you already own may be the more sensible choice. No sourced evidence establishes a universal productivity gain from owning both devices.
