Building the feature is only part of building an editor plugin. The same task can require different APIs, permissions, communication paths and submission work in each host application. In an Aug. 26, 2026 essay, developer Eugeniya Ivanova describes that contrast through integrations for Obsidian, VS Code and Figma, with Figma proving the most demanding in her experience.
What changes when a feature moves between editors?
An editor plugin runs inside an application whose environment it does not control. The host determines which APIs are available, how the plugin accesses documents and networks, and what steps distribution requires. As Ivanova puts it, the same task—sending a post—has to be rewritten for a different sandbox because the developer is a guest in each app.
Her comparison is experiential, not a benchmark. She gives specific implementation details for Figma, a brief account of an Obsidian networking choice, and no comparable technical breakdown for VS Code. The essay therefore illustrates how host-specific the work can be; it does not establish which editor is easiest to support or quantify maintenance costs. Read Ivanova’s account on DEV Community.

Why did the Figma integration need more than a small core?
The feature was designed to let someone select a Figma frame, add a caption, choose social accounts and publish without exporting an image and switching to another app. Ivanova says the main plugin file was 120 lines. That count describes the core file, not the total effort: image handling, communication between execution contexts, network access and submission requirements all sat around it.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Exporting the selected design
According to Ivanova, a selection change triggered a check that exactly one exportable node was selected. The plugin used a smaller export for the preview and a 2× PNG for publishing. She explained that choice by noting that social networks recompress uploads and small design text can soften in feeds; that is her rationale, not a universal guarantee about image quality.
Uploading the image in stages
Figma provided PNG bytes as a Uint8Array, rather than a file ready to attach to one request. Ivanova’s described flow created a post, received a temporary upload URL, uploaded the PNG, completed the media step and then updated the post. In that implementation, the post remained a draft until its media had been uploaded.

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Create the post and obtain the temporary upload URL.
- PUT the PNG bytes to that URL.
- Complete the media step, then update the post.
How did Figma’s separate contexts affect the design?
Ivanova describes Figma’s document and UI contexts as separate. The document-side context read the file and exported the selection; network work ran in the UI context. To move the image between them, she converted the bytes to an ordinary array for postMessage, then reconstructed a Uint8Array in the UI.
That boundary matters because a feature that appears to export an image and upload it is actually coordinating two contexts with different responsibilities. The plugin had to move the data across that boundary before the UI could perform its network work.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
What network and publishing constraints did the Figma plugin face?
CORS and the proxy
Ivanova says requests from the plugin’s sandboxed UI iframe carried Origin: null, which caused a CORS problem. Her solution was a small Cloudflare Worker that forwarded requests and added CORS headers. She says the Publora key remained in figma.clientStorage and was passed through to Publora.
Destination-specific composer rules
The composer also had to account for the selected destinations. In Ivanova’s account, it enforced the caption limit of the strictest selected network and required media when any selected network required it. These were the rules used for this integration as described in 2026, not a claim about current requirements across social platforms.

Manifest and Community listing details
Ivanova says the plugin manifest listed network domains individually rather than using a wildcard. She also says its Figma Community description disclosed the need for a Publora account, the free plan, local key storage, a privacy policy and a support contact. Those details describe her submission choices; they should not be read as a complete or current statement of Figma policy.

How did the work differ in Obsidian and VS Code?
For Obsidian, Ivanova says she used its requestUrl API for network calls because plain fetch encountered engine limits on mobile. She says only that VS Code has its own approaches; the essay does not provide enough implementation detail for a technical comparison.

The useful takeaway is not that one editor has a universally better plugin model. A developer planning multiple integrations should expect to revisit the host’s runtime and API surface, permission and network model, execution contexts and data-transfer boundaries, and distribution or review requirements. The essay does not quantify how much code or maintenance effort can be shared across hosts.
What was the plugin’s status when Ivanova published?
Ivanova reports testing the plugin in desktop Figma with a live Publora account and creating a draft that she confirmed through the API. She also says the plugin was still under review when her essay appeared on Aug. 26, 2026. Her account does not establish whether it was approved later or whether it is currently listed.
Should a product enter the editor or move users to a browser?
The practical choice is whether the convenience of staying in an existing editor workflow justifies building around that editor’s boundaries. An in-editor integration can remove a context switch for a focused task, as the Figma publishing flow aimed to do. But each host can require its own adaptation, and Ivanova’s account shows why a short core file does not by itself describe the full integration effort.
