Bluetooth earphones usually disconnect because of a depleted battery, excessive distance or obstructions, radio interference, a streaming connection, stale pairing data, earbud software, or the source device. The fastest approach is to test those possibilities in that order rather than immediately replacing the earphones.

Start with both earbuds charged and the phone or computer nearby, then compare downloaded audio with streaming. If the problem remains, re-pair the earbuds, apply the exact reset or firmware procedure for your model, and use the Windows-specific checks when the fault occurs only on a PC.

Observed symptom What to check first Useful comparison
The Bluetooth icon disappears and the earbuds reconnect later Charge, distance, obstructions, interference, and pairing state Test in the same room with the source device beside you
Audio stops but the earbuds still appear connected Streaming or app network conditions, audio output selection, and interference Play a downloaded track stored on the device
Only one earbud cuts out Both earbuds’ charge levels, fit, charging contacts, and model software Try the earbuds with another source device
Dropouts occur only during calls Call app, microphone profile, phone or computer Bluetooth handling, and distance Compare a local music file, a streamed track, and a call
The problem occurs only with one phone or computer That host’s Bluetooth settings, driver, power management, or software Connect the same earbuds to another host

A single symptom does not prove that the earbuds are defective. The cross-device tests later in this guide are more useful than guessing from the sound of the dropout.

1. Charge everything and remove distance as a variable

Charge the earbuds and case

Charge both earbuds and the case when the model uses a case. Check the left and right battery readings separately; one earbud can run out before the other. Inspect that each earbud is seated correctly in the case and that its charging contacts are clean and making contact. A low battery can cause unstable operation before the device reports a complete shutdown.

Microsoft’s Bluetooth guidance begins with the same basic checks: the accessory must be turned on, charged, and in range. Samsung’s Galaxy Buds guidance likewise tells users to check range and battery level in Galaxy Wearable. These checks apply even when the earbuds still show a connection for part of the time.

Test at close range

Place the phone or computer next to you, ideally in the same room as the earbuds, and play audio for several minutes. Avoid putting the source in a bag, behind your body, or in another room during this test. Apple recommends keeping the source close and avoiding walls or floors between it and the headphones.

If the connection is stable at close range but fails farther away, the immediate problem is range or obstruction. Reduce the distance, keep the source on the same side of your body as the affected earbud, and avoid testing through floors or several walls. If it still fails beside the source, continue with the interference and software checks rather than treating range as the sole cause.

2. Separate Bluetooth trouble from streaming trouble

Play content stored on the device

  1. Download or select an audio file that is already stored on the phone or computer.
  2. Turn the volume to a normal listening level and play it with the source device nearby.
  3. Repeat the same close-range test with the streaming app or service that normally drops out.

Apple Support states: “Your headphones may lose their connection with streaming audio more often than they do with content that is stored on your device.” Stable playback from a downloaded file is a diagnostic clue that the streaming path or its environment deserves investigation. It is not proof that the Bluetooth hardware is fault-free: a marginal Bluetooth link can also appear more often when an app is buffering or changing audio states.

Interpret the result

  • Both local and streamed audio cut out: continue with charge, range, interference, re-pairing, and source-device tests.
  • Local audio is steady but streaming cuts out: check the network connection, move to a less crowded location, and test another streaming app or downloaded file. Keep the source close while doing so.
  • Only one app fails: force-close and reopen that app, check its offline/downloaded playback, and test a different app before changing earbud settings.

3. Move away from radio and USB interference

Test in a different room or outdoors, away from dense Wi-Fi activity and other wireless equipment. Apple specifically identifies crowded areas, heavy Wi-Fi activity, poorly shielded cables, microwave ovens, and wireless speakers as situations that can contribute to headphone cutouts. Do not operate a microwave during the test, and temporarily move wireless speakers or other nearby transmitters away from the source and earbuds.

On a computer, Microsoft notes that an unshielded USB device plugged into a USB 3.0 port can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth. Disconnect nearby USB 3.0 devices temporarily, or move the Bluetooth adapter and the device farther apart if the computer uses a separate adapter. Reconnect one device at a time so you can tell whether the dropout returns.

If changing location fixes the issue, the result is environmental rather than a reason to reset the earbuds repeatedly. Use the location with fewer competing devices, keep the source in a clear position, and reconnect any accessories one by one to identify the trigger.

4. Forget the earbuds, restart the source, and pair again

Old pairing records can survive a software update, a device migration, or an interrupted connection. Re-pairing creates a fresh connection profile.

  1. Forget or unpair the earbuds. On an iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the earbuds, and choose Forget This Device. On Android, open the Bluetooth or connected-devices settings, select the earbuds, and choose Forget or Unpair; wording varies by manufacturer and Android release. On Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, open the earbuds’ menu, and choose Remove device.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off, then restart the phone or computer. A full restart clears temporary host-state problems that toggling Bluetooth alone may leave behind.
  3. Put the earbuds into pairing mode. Use the model’s documented method; do not assume that holding the case button for a particular number of seconds is universal.
  4. Pair from the source device’s Bluetooth menu. Keep the earbuds close until pairing completes, then play local audio before testing streaming.

If the earbuds do not appear, charge them, close the case and reopen it, and follow the manufacturer’s pairing instructions for that exact model. A reset is different from forgetting a device: it can erase saved connections and other settings.

5. Use the exact reset and software procedure for the model

Why generic reset instructions are risky

Reset combinations differ between products and generations. A button hold that restarts one model may start pairing on another, while a factory reset can remove all saved devices. Use the current manufacturer instructions for the exact model and region rather than a generic internet recipe.

Check firmware through the manufacturer app

Where the manufacturer provides an app, open the earbud settings and look for a firmware or software update. Samsung’s supported Galaxy Buds models can be checked in Galaxy Wearable. LG’s TONE Free guidance lists outdated Bluetooth software as one possible contributor, alongside low battery, distance, and interference. App names, update screens, and supported models can change, so confirm that the app recognizes the exact earbuds before installing anything.

When to reset

Reset only after charging, reducing distance and interference, and re-pairing have failed. Follow the documented sequence, complete the reset, restart the source device, and pair again. If the manufacturer’s preceding measures do not solve persistent disconnections, its support guidance may direct you to a restart, factory reset, or service request.

6. If the source is a Windows PC

When the same earbuds work reliably with a phone but disconnect on a Windows computer, investigate the computer before blaming the earbuds. Microsoft’s guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but the troubleshooting locations can still exist on an installed system. Labels and available options vary by Windows release and computer maker.

Run the built-in Bluetooth troubleshooter

  1. Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
  2. Search for the Bluetooth troubleshooter and follow its prompts.
  3. Allow it to apply a suggested repair, then reconnect the earbuds and test local audio.

Check power-saving settings

Open Settings > System > Power & battery and review Energy saver or Battery saver. Temporarily disable an aggressive saver mode while testing, especially if cutouts occur when the laptop is idle or running on battery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the adapter itself, open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the Bluetooth adapter, and choose Properties. If a Power Management tab is present, review the option that allows Windows to turn off the device to save power. Some computers do not expose this tab; do not infer a fault from its absence.

Restart Bluetooth Support Service

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Bluetooth Support Service.
  3. Right-click it and choose Restart. If it is stopped, choose Start.
  4. Reconnect the earbuds and test again.

Update the Bluetooth driver

In Device Manager, right-click the Bluetooth adapter and choose Update driver. If Windows reports that no newer driver is available, check the computer manufacturer’s support site for the current Bluetooth driver for the exact model and Windows edition. Avoid installing a driver intended for a different computer or adapter.

Remove nearby USB causes

Disconnect unshielded USB 3.0 devices near the Bluetooth antenna or adapter and retest. If the problem disappears, reconnect those devices individually or move the Bluetooth adapter away from the USB hardware. This test is especially useful when dropouts began after connecting a dock, storage device, or other USB accessory.

7. Use two cross-device tests to locate the fault

Cross-testing is the most useful way to decide whether to pursue earbud support or source-device troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Test the same earbuds with another source. Use a different phone, tablet, or computer. Keep it close and play a downloaded file first.
  2. Test another Bluetooth accessory with the original source. A different pair of headphones or a speaker can show whether the host has a broader Bluetooth problem.
  3. Repeat under the original conditions. If the fault appears only while streaming, in one room, or during calls, preserve that condition so the comparison is meaningful.
Cross-test result Stronger suspect Next action
The earbuds disconnect on several source devices Earbud battery, fit, firmware, charging, or hardware Apply the exact model reset/update instructions and contact the earbud manufacturer if the fault persists
Several Bluetooth accessories fail on one computer Computer driver, power management, service, adapter, or interference Complete the Windows checks and inspect USB devices and drivers
Only streaming fails, while local files remain stable Streaming connection or app conditions Test another network, location, app, or downloaded file
Only one location causes failures Local interference or obstruction Relocate the source, remove nearby transmitters, and test USB equipment separately
Only one earbud fails across sources Individual earbud charge, contact, fit, software, or hardware Check its charging contact and battery reading, then use the model’s support procedure

This is a practical diagnostic inference, not a manufacturer-certified fault test. It narrows the next support path without claiming that any single cause is universally the most common.

8. Fit and earbud-side checks

For supported Galaxy Buds models, Samsung includes wearing fit and Bluetooth connection among the factors to check. Re-seat the affected earbud, try the supplied ear-tip size if the model uses interchangeable tips, and make sure the earbud is fully seated in its charging bay afterward. A poor fit can be mistaken for an intermittent connection when the issue is actually an individual earbud losing stable contact or power.

Check the case and earbud contacts for lint or residue using the cleaning method specified by the manufacturer. Do not insert liquid into the charging port or use a metal tool on the contacts. If one earbud repeatedly shows a different charge level, fails to charge, or disconnects on every source after a documented reset, the manufacturer’s service process is more appropriate than buying replacement accessories immediately.

9. When replacement or service is justified

Do not treat replacement earbuds as the first fix. The evidence is stronger for service when all of the following are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Both earbuds and the case have been charged and verified to make contact.
  • The source was tested nearby with no walls, floors, or obvious interference between it and the earbuds.
  • Downloaded audio and streaming were compared.
  • The earbuds were forgotten, the source was restarted, and pairing was completed again.
  • The model-specific software, reset, and support instructions were followed.
  • The failure follows the earbuds to another source, or one earbud fails consistently across sources.

If several accessories fail only on one host, pursue the host’s driver, adapter, service, or power-management path instead. If the fault occurs only in a particular building or near particular equipment, changing the environment is more likely to help than replacing the earbuds.

A short decision path

  1. Charge both earbuds and the case, then test with the source beside you.
  2. Play a downloaded file, followed by the usual streaming content.
  3. Move away from heavy Wi-Fi activity, microwaves, wireless speakers, poorly shielded cables, and nearby unshielded USB 3.0 devices.
  4. Forget or unpair the earbuds, restart the source, and pair again.
  5. Use the exact manufacturer instructions for a firmware update, restart, or factory reset.
  6. For Windows, run the Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter, review power saving, restart Bluetooth Support Service, and update the adapter driver.
  7. Test the earbuds with another source and another Bluetooth accessory with the original source.
  8. Choose earbud support or source-device support based on which device the fault follows.
