I kept blocking Facebook, then turning the block off when I needed Marketplace, a Group, or Messenger. The task was legitimate; the feed browsing that followed was what I wanted to avoid. I stopped treating the whole site as the problem and began looking for a limit that would leave the useful parts available.
Why a full Facebook block kept failing
In a first-person article published on DEV Community by WebsiteGeek on August 26, 2026, the author describes trying blockers including StayFocusd, Cold Turkey, Freedom, and BlockSite, then abandoning them because a complete block also interrupted ordinary tasks. The cycle was straightforward: block Facebook, need a feature, disable the block, and risk slipping into the feed.
That account is one person’s experience, not evidence that the same approach will work for everyone. But it points to a useful distinction: needing Facebook for a specific task does not necessarily mean you want its main feed available whenever you open it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSeparate the task from the feed
Before choosing a restriction, write down the Facebook function you still need. It might be a Marketplace conversation, a Group, or Messenger. Then identify what you want to limit: the feed, unplanned visits, notifications, or the app on your phone. The narrower the target, the less likely a restriction is to interrupt the task that matters.

The author’s described alternative was to hide feeds while leaving selected Facebook features accessible. The same article says the extension FocusRamp also offers site blocking, scheduled focus mode, and a Pomodoro timer, and describes feed hiding on Facebook, Instagram, and X. Those are claims in a creator-authored article; current availability, feature behavior, privacy practices, and pricing have not been independently verified here. Check the extension’s current listing and permissions before installing it, and do not assume it supports every browser or device.
Choose a limit that preserves what you need
| Approach | What it is intended to change | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Hide the feed | Limits exposure to the feed while aiming to leave selected features available | Depends on the tool’s current behavior and device support; verify that your needed features remain usable |
| Schedule focus periods | Restricts access during chosen periods rather than all day | A full site restriction during a focus period may still interrupt a needed task |
| Block selected sites | Creates a broader barrier to sites you identify | May recreate the original problem if Facebook itself is blocked when you need it |
| Reduce notifications | Reduces prompts that invite unplanned visits | Does not prevent opening the feed once you choose to visit |
| Use browser-only access or remove the phone app | Adds friction to casual mobile access | Access becomes less convenient, including when you have a legitimate reason to check Facebook |
The final three options also appear in a September 2017 Hacker News discussion, where users described relying on Facebook for messaging, Groups, events, or activism while limiting access in these ways. Those comments are historical anecdotes, not current platform instructions or evidence of typical results.

Test the rule against your real routine
- Name the must-keep function. Be specific—for example, checking a Group or answering a Marketplace message.
- Set the narrowest limit that addresses the unwanted behavior. If the feed is the issue, try a feed-focused restriction before blocking the whole domain. If interruptions are the issue, consider reducing notifications or setting a focus period.
- Check your devices and fallback route. Confirm where the restriction works and whether you can still reach the needed feature without defeating the rule entirely.
- Notice whether the rule is sustainable. If you repeatedly disable it to complete ordinary tasks, adjust the boundary rather than treating the failed block as a lack of willpower.
What this approach can—and cannot—establish
The cited first-person article and the older discussion offer practical ideas and individual accounts. They do not establish that feed hiding improves mental health, attention, or productivity, or that any one setup suits most people. Treat the options as ways to shape access around your own priorities, not as proven outcomes.
