A recognizable 3D game can now launch from a URL because developers can compile an existing engine to WebAssembly, connect it to browser APIs, and draw through WebGL2 or WebGPU. The result is usually a genuine browser build of an existing engine or an emulator—not an entire commercial game recreated by an AI prompt.
That distinction matters. A browser port can preserve deterministic gameplay, original timing and familiar controls, while an AI world-model demo may generate new frames and reactions that only resemble the source game. Both can look surprising in a video, but they solve different technical problems.
Why a browser can run a game built for a PC
Existing source code removes the hardest barrier
Doom, Quake and several games based on id Tech have public source code or mature open-source ports. A developer can keep the engine’s rendering, physics, level logic and game rules, then replace platform-specific code written for DOS, Win32 or a native console with browser-compatible implementations. That is far less work than rebuilding a game from screenshots.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Closed commercial games are more difficult because the executable, engine and assets may be proprietary. Even when an enthusiast can make the code run, distributing the original maps, textures, sounds or music may require permission. A technical port and a legally distributable package are separate questions.

WebAssembly is the portable execution target
WebAssembly (Wasm) is a compact binary format that browsers can execute at near-native speeds for many workloads. Toolchains such as Emscripten compile portable C and C++ code to Wasm and provide browser-facing implementations for files, timing, audio, threads and other system services. Rust projects can target Wasm as well.
JavaScript remains the integration layer. It creates the page, loads the Wasm module, connects browser events and handles asynchronous operations that do not map neatly to desktop system calls. Mozilla described WebAssembly in 2018 as “a lean, mean language that lets browsers run desktop programs” and called it key to gaming on the web.
The page can use the graphics processor
WebGL2 gives a browser port a mature, widely deployed route to the GPU and is sufficient for many classic 2D and 3D engines. WebGPU is newer and exposes a more direct graphics model. Chrome for Developers says WebGPU can provide significantly less JavaScript work for the same graphics and access GPU capabilities that WebGL does not expose.
WebGPU first shipped in Chrome 113 in 2023; the Chrome documentation carrying that overview was updated on August 11, 2025. Support still varies by browser, operating system, device and graphics driver, so a game that is smooth on one machine may need a WebGL2 fallback or reduced settings elsewhere.
Browser APIs replace desktop services
- Input: keyboard and mouse events, pointer lock for mouselook, touch events and gamepad APIs can be mapped to the engine’s existing controls.
- Audio and display: browser audio APIs, fullscreen requests and the page’s visibility lifecycle replace native sound and window-management calls.
- Storage: IndexedDB can hold settings, save data and cached assets. The File System Access API can let a user select local game files where the browser and permission model allow it.
- Networking: WebSockets provide a broadly available multiplayer connection. WebTransport can offer newer transport options where both the browser and server support them.
These services are asynchronous and permission-bound. A port must be designed around that model rather than assuming it can synchronously read any file or open any native socket.

What developers actually do to make a port
A typical port is an engineering pipeline, not a single “convert to web” button.
- Choose a legal engine and data path. The team starts with source code it may use and decides whether the player must supply original WAD, PK3 or other game data. This decision affects packaging, loading screens and the project’s legal exposure.
- Remove platform dependencies. DOS, Win32, POSIX or console calls are replaced with portable code or browser shims. File paths, timers, threads, dynamic libraries, controller handling and window APIs commonly need changes.
- Compile to WebAssembly. A toolchain produces a Wasm module and JavaScript glue. Build settings determine memory limits, threading, debugging information and whether assets are embedded, downloaded or selected by the user.
- Connect the render path. Existing OpenGL-style code may be adapted to WebGL2. A newer renderer can target WebGPU, with a fallback for browsers that do not expose it. Shader syntax, texture formats, depth conventions and feature limits must be checked on real devices.
- Implement browser input and lifecycle behavior. Pointer lock, fullscreen, focus changes, touch controls and gamepads need explicit handling. The game must pause or recover cleanly when a tab is backgrounded or a permission is denied.
- Make assets and saves asynchronous. Large files are fetched or selected in pieces, decoded without freezing the page and cached when appropriate. Save writes must survive reloads without assuming a synchronous desktop filesystem.
- Add optional networking. A single-player build may need no server. Multiplayer ports can use WebSockets or WebTransport, with a relay or session service that understands browser connections. Cloudflare’s Doom case study, for example, describes a WebAssembly build with browser-compatible input, sound, fullscreen and networking; Durable Objects can keep session state near players.
- Test fidelity and failure cases. Developers compare timing, collision, audio, rendering, saves, controller behavior and network recovery against the native build across browsers and devices.
Are browser versions of Doom and Quake ports or emulators?
There is no single answer. A source port recompiles or adapts the game’s engine for the browser. An emulator instead reproduces the behavior of an older CPU or operating system so an original executable can run inside that emulated environment. Some projects combine both ideas, and a site may not explain which approach it uses.

Doom and Quake benefit from unusually accessible code
Their source availability and long-established porting communities provide tested engines, renderers and file formats. That is why these games appear in browsers more often than a modern, closed AAA release. The browser work is still substantial: graphics, input, audio, file loading, timing, saves and networking all need a compatible layer.
User-supplied data changes the distribution model
DOOM.WS presents itself as an independent fan project, says it is not affiliated with id Software or Bethesda, and asks users to provide their own game files where applicable. A page can therefore distribute the porting code while leaving copyrighted data to the person who owns it. Whether a particular file is lawful to download depends on its license and the rights holder’s terms.
What “vibe-coded port” means—and what it does not
“Vibe-coded port” is an informal description of AI-assisted development, not a defined engineering category. A coding assistant may draft build files, JavaScript glue, input handlers, shader conversions, menus and deployment configuration. It can accelerate repetitive work and help a developer explore an unfamiliar codebase.

It does not remove the need for human verification. Someone must resolve compiler errors, inspect licenses, measure memory and frame timing, test asset loading and saves, check controller and pointer-lock behavior, and validate multiplayer synchronization. An AI-generated patch that works in one browser can still fail on another device or corrupt a save.

Microsoft Research’s Muse and WHAMM projects illustrate a separate direction. Their models generate game visuals and controller responses rather than executing the original game’s deterministic engine. Microsoft Research reported training WHAM with more than one billion images and controller actions from Ninja Theory’s Bleeding Edge, equivalent to more than seven years of continuous human gameplay.
In April 2025, WHAMM was shown in Copilot Labs as a real-time, playable Quake II-inspired experience: the model generated frames as a user acted. Microsoft Research described the interaction as playing inside the model, and the Muse project page described sequences lasting several minutes from a one-second prompt. Those demonstrations show a world model’s ability to continue a visual and interactive sequence; they are not a deterministic WebAssembly build of the original Quake II engine.
Xbox Wire has described Muse’s possible uses with Ninja Theory, including gameplay ideation and making older games accessible on new devices. Those are stated research directions, not evidence that an AI can reproduce a complete commercial game, its exact rules or its licensed assets.
How the approaches compare
| Approach | Fidelity | Code and data | Reliability | Typical reason to use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WebAssembly source port | Can preserve the original engine’s rules, timing and rendering within browser limits | Adapted source code; original game data may be bundled only when permitted or supplied by the player | Deterministic simulation and reproducible saves are possible | Preservation, fan projects and a native-feeling link-based release |
| Browser emulator | Depends on how accurately the emulated hardware and operating system are reproduced | Emulator plus an original executable or disk image, subject to data rights | Usually repeatable, but slower or more fragile when the emulated environment is incomplete | Running software whose source is unavailable |
| AI world-model demo | Visual and interactive resemblance can be impressive but is not the original engine | Generated frames and actions learned from training data | Output can vary and may not preserve exact rules, levels or saves | Research into interactive generation and rapid gameplay ideation |
The limits that keep many modern AAA games native
Performance is device-dependent
Wasm and GPU APIs remove much of the old browser overhead, but they do not make every device equivalent to a gaming PC. Thermal throttling on phones and laptops, driver bugs, browser memory limits, shader compilation and background-tab policies can all change frame rate and stability.

Large assets need a different loading strategy
Gabriel Cuvillier’s Doom 3 port interview explains that external operations are mediated through JavaScript and that large persistent files cannot be synchronously read in the same way as on a desktop. Large games therefore need asynchronous downloads, packaging, caching or user-selected files. A single link may still trigger a substantial download before the first level starts.
Browser security narrows the API surface
A page cannot freely access arbitrary local files, install native drivers or open unrestricted network connections. Permissions, same-origin rules, secure-context requirements and user-gesture checks are part of the design. These constraints are valuable for safety but require more glue code than a native executable.
Multiplayer needs browser-aware infrastructure
WebSockets are a practical baseline, while WebTransport can be useful where supported. The server must handle reconnects, latency and the browser’s connection model. Edge state services such as Durable Objects can simplify room or match coordination, but they do not eliminate the need for authoritative game logic and abuse protection.
Why browser ports matter for preservation
A native release can become difficult to run when an operating system, driver, storefront or physical media disappears. A maintained browser build offers a low-friction way to keep a legally usable version accessible on Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebooks and mobile devices. It can also expose the game to classrooms, archives and players who cannot install a native source port.

Preservation is strongest when the project documents its source license, asset policy, supported browsers, save format and fallback renderer. A URL alone does not settle copyright, guarantee permanence or ensure that a server will remain online.
Quick Recap
What players should check before launching one
- Whether the project includes game data or requires your own legally obtained WAD, PK3 or equivalent files.
- Which browsers and versions are supported, and whether WebGPU is optional or required.
- Whether keyboard, pointer lock, touch and gamepad controls are implemented.
- How saves are stored, whether clearing site data deletes them and whether private browsing changes persistence.
- How much data must be downloaded and whether assets are cached for later sessions.
- Whether multiplayer uses a live service, what transport it uses and how reconnects are handled.
- Who publishes the build and whether the project clearly separates its code license from the rights to the original game.
