Betelgeuse’s companion is hard to pick out because it is faint, lies only about 52 milliarcseconds from a much brighter red supergiant, and spends much of its orbit inside the primary star’s glare. Hubble has not produced a normal photograph of the companion; instead, years of spectral and atmospheric measurements reveal a moving wake—the disturbance the companion leaves in Betelgeuse’s outer atmosphere.

The short answer: extreme contrast, tiny separation and changing orbital geometry

Betelgeuse is a red supergiant roughly 650 light-years away. Its visible surface and extended atmosphere are enormously bright compared with a much smaller companion. Even if the two stars are physically separated by many astronomical units, their apparent separation on the sky can be only a few hundredths of an arcsecond. The reported candidate position is about 52 milliarcseconds (mas), and one mas is one-thousandth of an arcsecond.

That combination creates a severe high-contrast problem. Light from Betelgeuse spreads across the detector and through the telescope’s optics, producing a bright halo and diffraction structure that can hide a much fainter point source. The companion is reported to be roughly six magnitudes fainter than Betelgeuse at a wavelength of 466 nanometres in the 2025 Gemini analysis. A six-magnitude difference corresponds to a very large brightness contrast, and the comparison is made at one wavelength rather than across the whole visible spectrum.

Orbital phase makes the task even harder. The companion’s apparent distance from Betelgeuse changes as it moves around the supergiant. Near greatest separation, observers have a short window—only a few months—when the companion is far enough from the primary’s glare to offer a realistic chance of detection. It then moves back toward the bright stellar disk and atmospheric halo.

Why a conventional photograph is unusually difficult

Betelgeuse overwhelms nearby faint light

Direct imaging asks a telescope to distinguish a faint source from the wings of a far brighter one. For Betelgeuse, the problem is not simply that the companion emits little light. The primary is a luminous, variable red supergiant with an atmosphere that extends beyond its apparent photosphere. Scattered and diffracted light from that extended structure can be brighter than the companion at the exact location where astronomers expect to find it.

Professional instruments use adaptive optics, speckle imaging, coronagraphic techniques and carefully modelled point-spread functions to suppress or subtract the primary star’s light. Those methods improve contrast, but they cannot remove every atmospheric fluctuation or optical artifact. A residual speckle can look like a companion, especially when a candidate appears in only one data set or at low statistical significance.

The angular separation is measured in milliarcseconds

The candidate lies only about 52 mas from Betelgeuse. That is far below the angular scale at which ordinary backyard telescopes can separate two stars visually. The relevant limitation is angular resolution, not merely magnification: increasing eyepiece power cannot recover detail that the atmosphere and telescope aperture have blurred together. The companion’s proximity also means that even a space telescope must distinguish it from Betelgeuse’s bright, structured halo.

The useful viewing interval is brief

Because the orbit continually changes the projected separation, an observation that is favorable in one season may be unusable later. NASA says the interval around greatest separation lasts only a few months before the companion is lost in the glare again. Timing therefore matters as much as instrument sensitivity. A non-detection outside that interval does not by itself disprove the companion; it may simply reflect an unfavorable orbital phase.

What Hubble actually reveals

Eight years of measurements, not a single snapshot

NASA’s January 2026 account describes nearly eight years of observations from Hubble and ground-based observatories. Researchers followed changes in spectral lines and in the speed and direction of gas moving through Betelgeuse’s outer atmosphere. Instead of asking only whether a faint point appears beside the star, this approach asks whether the atmosphere contains a repeatable disturbance that moves in a physically plausible way.

A wake in the extended atmosphere

The observed pattern is consistent with a denser wake left as the companion travels through Betelgeuse’s tenuous outer atmosphere. The companion itself may be too faint and too close to image cleanly, but its gravitational and hydrodynamic influence can alter the surrounding gas. Those changes affect the strengths, shapes and Doppler shifts of spectral lines. By measuring how those features vary over time, astronomers can infer the direction and speed of atmospheric material.

NASA quotes Andrea Dupree of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian describing the effect this way: “It’s a bit like a boat moving through water. The companion star creates a ripple effect in Betelgeuse’s atmosphere that we can actually see in the data.” The boat metaphor refers to the observable disturbance, not to a visible image of the companion.

Why the wake is persuasive evidence

A single speckle-like feature can be caused by noise, imperfect calibration or changing atmospheric conditions. A coherent pattern that recurs as the suspected orbit carries the companion through the line of sight is harder to explain as an artifact. NASA’s account says the wake appears after the companion crosses in front of Betelgeuse, approximately every 2,100 days—about six years. The recurrence links the atmospheric disturbance to orbital geometry rather than to an isolated fluctuation in the supergiant.

The orbital cycle and the 2027 observing forecast

The roughly 2,100-day interval is the reported time between foreground crossings associated with the wake’s appearance. At the time of NASA’s 2026 report, the companion was eclipsed from our viewpoint. NASA says astronomers plan additional observations when it emerges in 2027; an earlier observing forecast placed greatest separation in November 2027.

That date is a forecast, not a guarantee that the star will suddenly become obvious on a particular night. The exact observing opportunity depends on the orbit, the projected separation, instrument performance and the level of Betelgeuse’s own atmospheric variability. The practical expectation is a more favorable season for high-contrast observations, followed by another decline in visibility as the companion approaches the supergiant’s glare.

How the direct-imaging reports fit together

Hubble’s wake evidence and the direct-imaging reports answer related but different questions. The wake traces an effect in gas around Betelgeuse. Gemini North and the Very Large Telescope sought a compact source at the predicted location. Their results should not be merged into the claim that Hubble photographed the companion.

Observation What was measured Reported result How to interpret it
Gemini North/Alopeke speckle images, reported 2025 Images from 2020 and 2024; candidate position in the 2024 data About 52 mas separation, position angle 115 degrees, roughly six magnitudes fainter than Betelgeuse at 466 nm; 1.5-sigma significance A probable but tentative direct-imaging signal on its own
VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL data from 6 December 2024, announced by ESO on 19 August 2026 High-contrast processing with two pipelines 6.1 sigma with PACO ASDI and 5.1 sigma with PCA; 52.32 ± 0.18 mas separation and position angle 117.12 ± 0.60 degrees A stronger candidate in a separate data set and analysis; still described as candidate Betelgeuse B
Hubble and ground-based monitoring, summarized by NASA in January 2026 Nearly eight years of spectral-line changes and gas velocity and direction Atmospheric wake recurring on an approximately 2,100-day cycle Evidence of the companion’s influence, not a direct image of the star

What the Gemini significance means

The 2025 Gemini report’s 1.5-sigma value is low by the standards normally used to claim a secure detection. Its authors therefore called the source probable rather than definitive. The reported separation and position are useful because they provide a testable location for later observations, but the statistical qualification must remain attached whenever that result is discussed.

Why the ESO result is different

ESO’s 2026 announcement reports the same general separation scale and a similar position angle in VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL data, but with higher processing significances: 6.1 sigma using PACO ASDI and 5.1 sigma using principal-component analysis (PCA). These are results from a different instrument, data set and reduction pipeline, so they are independent evidence rather than a revised Hubble measurement. The agreement in location strengthens the case for a real source, while the word candidate acknowledges that follow-up and modelling still matter.

The quoted mass is conditional

ESO gives an estimated mass of 2.6–3.1 solar masses for candidate Betelgeuse B. That range assumes the two stars are coeval—that is, they formed at approximately the same time and can be interpreted with a shared evolutionary history. If that assumption changes, the inferred mass can change as well. The mass estimate is therefore not a direct measurement from brightness alone and should not be treated as independent of the stated model.

What Hubble did not do

Hubble did not produce a resolved portrait showing the companion as a separate, unmistakable disk beside Betelgeuse. NASA’s illustration of the companion and its wake is labelled an artist’s concept, not a Hubble photograph. The telescope’s contribution is time-resolved evidence: spectra and gas-motion measurements that reveal how material in the supergiant’s atmosphere behaves as the companion passes through or near it.

This distinction matters because an image and an inference from environmental effects carry different uncertainties. Direct imaging depends on contrast, angular separation and control of instrumental artifacts. Wake tracking depends on atmospheric modelling, the repeatability of spectral changes and the match between the disturbance’s timing and the proposed orbit. Agreement between the methods is more informative than treating either method as proof of the other.

How astronomers decide whether the companion is real

  1. Check the position. A genuine source should appear at a consistent separation and position angle after accounting for measurement uncertainty and orbital motion.
  2. Repeat the observation. Independent epochs and instruments reduce the chance that a detector artifact, speckle or reduction choice created the signal.
  3. Compare with the predicted orbital phase. A candidate should become easier to separate near greatest projected distance and harder to see as it returns toward Betelgeuse’s glare.
  4. Test the atmospheric signature. Spectral-line changes and gas velocities should show a pattern compatible with a moving wake, including the approximately six-year recurrence reported by NASA.
  5. State the statistical and modelling limits. The Gemini 1.5-sigma result, the ESO pipeline-dependent significances and the coevality-dependent mass estimate answer different levels of certainty.

This layered approach explains why current accounts use several labels at once: NASA describes firm evidence for an effect in Betelgeuse’s atmosphere, the Gemini paper reports a probable direct-imaging signal, and ESO reports a stronger candidate in its VLT data.

Could an amateur telescope see the companion?

Not as a separated visual star under ordinary observing conditions. The 52-mas scale is far below practical atmospheric resolution for typical backyard equipment, and Betelgeuse’s brightness creates the same contrast problem that challenges professional instruments. A consumer telescope may show Betelgeuse as a bright point or, under specialized conditions, reveal aspects of its variability, but it should not be expected to resolve this companion.

Professional observations use large apertures, stable calibration, high-speed imaging or spectroscopy, adaptive-optics systems and sophisticated post-processing. Even then, the favorable orbital phase lasts only a limited time. The scientifically useful observations planned for 2027 are therefore campaigns with carefully scheduled instruments, not a simple matter of increasing eyepiece magnification.

What to watch for in future reports

Reports about Betelgeuse B should specify whether they describe direct imaging or atmospheric inference, identify the instrument and data date, and retain the relevant uncertainty. A clear account will distinguish the 2025 Gemini probable detection from the 2026 ESO candidate and will not call either one a Hubble photograph.

The most informative follow-up would combine another favorable-separation image with continued spectroscopy. If a compact source moves as the proposed orbit predicts while the wake and spectral changes recur on the expected schedule, the case will become stronger. Conversely, a future non-detection must be interpreted in light of orbital phase and the glare environment rather than treated automatically as a disproof.

For now, the evidence supports a consistent picture: Betelgeuse has a nearby, faint companion whose presence is easiest to recognize through the disturbance it creates in the red supergiant’s atmosphere. Direct images are emerging from specialized high-contrast observations, while Hubble’s distinctive role is to show the companion’s wake and the changing motion of the surrounding gas.
