AWS data transfer is not one universal egress fee. Charges depend on the service, where traffic starts and ends, its direction, and the route it takes—including whether it crosses Availability Zones or Regions or passes through a NAT Gateway or Transit Gateway. To find the cause, start with transfer-related usage in Cost Explorer, then use billing exports and network-path details to identify the service and resource before changing the architecture.

Why AWS data transfer appears as a complex bill category

AWS describes compute, storage, and outbound data transfer as three fundamental cost drivers. Transfer costs can arise on different paths: internet egress, traffic between Availability Zones (AZs), traffic between Regions, and service-specific flows. The applicable treatment depends on the source, destination, service, and Region; a single per-gigabyte rate cannot explain every line item.

A workload may also traverse multiple chargeable segments. For example, a request could pass through a NAT Gateway, cross an AZ, and reach an internet destination. A CDN path can involve origin transfer as well as delivery from edge locations. Each segment needs to be considered in its billing context.

How to identify which resource caused the charge

  1. Start in Cost Explorer. Filter for data-transfer-related usage categories and look for service-specific entries, such as EC2 inter-AZ transfer or S3 internet and Region-to-Region transfer. The label can point to the kind of traffic, but may not by itself identify the resource that generated it.
  2. Inspect detailed billing data. In your Cost and Usage Report (CUR) or AWS Data Exports, examine product code, usage type, Region indicators, and resource identifiers when available. Product code can help distinguish CloudFront data transfer from internet egress; usage-type fields can provide more detail about transfer type and direction.
  3. Group the results by service, Region, transfer type, and resource. AWS’s CUDOS analysis provides a data-transfer and networking view using these dimensions, with examples including NAT Gateway, Transit Gateway, EC2, S3, and CloudFront. Use the breakdown to identify the largest contributors and any recent changes.
  4. Trace the actual network path. Check whether traffic uses an internet gateway or NAT Gateway, load balancer, VPC endpoint, peering connection, Transit Gateway, cross-AZ or cross-Region route, or CDN and origin. Compare that path with the usage types in the bill.
  5. Verify current pricing before estimating savings. Check the current rate for the specific service, Region, and path. A billing category is not a reliable substitute for the applicable rate card.

How the main AWS transfer paths differ

Internet traffic

AWS’s architecture overview describes inbound transfer as uncharged across its services and Regions, while outbound internet transfer is priced by service and originating Region. That overview dates to 2021, so treat it as an explanation of the pricing model—not a guarantee of current terms or rates. Confirm the applicable service documentation and rate card for your use case.

S3 internet egress and exceptions

AWS re:Post describes a 100 GB per month internet-egress allowance aggregated across AWS services and Regions, with China and GovCloud (US) excluded. It also lists exceptions, including transfer into S3 from the internet, S3-to-CloudFront transfer, and certain same-Region transfers. The allowance and exceptions are subject to AWS’s current terms; confirm that the bill, account, and Regions qualify before using the figure in a cost estimate.

To investigate an S3 charge, look for the relevant S3 transfer usage in billing data, then check its direction and destination. Do not assume every S3 transfer is internet egress or that the allowance applies to every transfer type.

CloudFront and its origin

CloudFront usage reports record bytes served from edge locations. AWS’s billing guide says any applicable S3-to-CloudFront transfer charges appear under AWS Data Transfer, so examine origin transfer separately from viewer delivery. Compare the origin path, CloudFront delivery, request charges, and caching behavior; direct-origin access can also affect the overall cost. CloudFront does not make every transfer free or guarantee a lower total bill.

Inter-AZ, inter-Region, NAT, and Transit Gateway traffic

AWS billing includes inter-AZ and Region-to-Region transfer categories. If substantial traffic crosses AZs, inspect which communicating resources are involved and why. A Transit Gateway can add per-GB data-processing costs when traffic passes through it, while NAT Gateway placement and routing can contribute to both transfer and network costs. Follow the path rather than assuming the most visible line item is the only one involved.

How to reduce transfer costs without weakening the architecture

  • Investigate unnecessary cross-AZ traffic. Keeping communicating services in the same AZ may reduce cross-zone traffic where the design permits, but weigh that against redundancy, failover, availability, and latency requirements.
  • Check same-Region service access. AWS architecture guidance says VPC gateway endpoints for S3 or DynamoDB avoid data transfer charges for same-Region communication. Validate endpoint and service costs for your architecture before making a change.
  • Review NAT and Transit Gateway routes. Identify which AZ hosts each gateway, where traffic enters and exits, and whether an intermediary is processing avoidable volume. Include the intermediary’s own charges in the comparison.
  • Evaluate CDN economics end to end. Compare origin transfer, edge delivery, request charges, caching, and direct-origin traffic. The right result depends on the workload and current prices, not on the presence of a CDN alone.
  • Use resource-level billing data before redesigning. A CUR or CUDOS-style breakdown can show which resources and recent changes contribute most, helping focus architectural investigation on material costs.

How to compare a proposed fix with the current design

For each candidate change, compare the same factors on both sides:

  • the billed usage type and network path;
  • source service, destination, and transfer direction;
  • AWS Region and AZ involved;
  • volume of data transferred;
  • NAT Gateway, Transit Gateway, or other intermediary processing; and
  • total architecture cost, including requests, service charges, redundancy, and latency implications.

There is no universal best topology or transfer rate. A change that reduces one transfer category can introduce other service costs or alter availability and performance. The bill establishes what AWS charged for recorded usage; deciding whether to redesign requires evaluating the full path and workload needs.
