Attacks or credible threats near the Strait of Hormuz can raise global oil prices because they put a large volume of internationally traded oil at risk at the same time. Tanker attacks, mines, missile threats, insurance withdrawals, or naval restrictions can delay cargoes, force ships onto longer routes, and make traders price in a possible shortage before a measured supply loss appears.

There is no fixed price increase for any individual attack. The market response depends on how many barrels are delayed or lost, how long the disruption lasts, whether traffic can continue, and how much inventory, alternative transport, spare supply and demand reduction are available.

Why this narrow waterway matters to the oil market

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Indian Ocean. It is a chokepoint: a relatively small sea passage through which a very large share of export cargoes must travel. In its 2025 baseline, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported about 20 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil and petroleum products moving through the Strait—approximately 25% of world seaborne oil trade.

The IEA’s underlying figures were 14.95 million bpd of crude and 4.93 million bpd of products, or 19.87 million bpd combined. These are 2025 flows, not a claim about the disrupted 2026 rate. About 80% of total oil flows were bound for Asia. That destination pattern does not make the risk regional: oil is priced in globally connected markets, so a threat to supply can move international benchmarks even when most physical cargoes are headed to Asian refineries.

What kind of oil crosses the Strait

Crude is the largest component, but refined products also matter. Diesel, jet fuel and other products can have different inventories, refinery requirements and replacement options. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) follows its own contracts and shipping patterns. A disruption therefore should not be treated as an identical shock to every fuel market.

The IEA said nearly 15 million bpd of crude—nearly 34% of global crude-oil trade—transited the Strait in 2025. China and India together received 44% of those crude exports. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), using a different category and period, found that 89% of Hormuz crude oil and condensate went to Asian markets in the first half of 2025; China, India, Japan and South Korea together represented 74% of those flows. The differing percentages reflect different definitions and reporting periods, not a contradiction.

How an attack becomes a global price signal

1. Physical supply becomes less certain

An attack can damage a tanker, close a shipping lane temporarily, cause ships to wait outside the Strait, or make owners refuse to sail. Even when no cargo is destroyed, delayed loading and delivery reduce the supply available to buyers at that moment. The EIA notes that a temporary blockage at a major chokepoint can delay supplies, raise shipping costs and potentially lift world energy prices.

Oil prices are set at the margin. Buyers do not need to lose every barrel for prices to rise; they need to compete more aggressively for the barrels that can arrive on schedule. A refinery facing an imminent shortfall may bid for another cargo, while a trader may pay more to secure inventory.

2. Traders price expected disruption before measured losses

Futures and spot markets respond to expectations as well as current tanker counts. If an attack suggests that additional ships could be hit, insurers could withdraw cover, or a government could restrict passage, traders may add a risk premium to offers immediately. Conversely, a quick restoration of safe passage can remove that premium even if no large physical shortage occurred.

The IEA describes the pricing impact as global and immediate. That does not establish a universal premium or a standard percentage increase. The eventual move depends on the credibility, duration and scope of the threat and on how much spare supply and inventory the market believes it can mobilize.

3. Rerouting raises freight, insurance and timing costs

Ships that avoid the Strait may need to take much longer routes. The extra sailing time consumes fuel, ties up tankers and delays delivery. War-risk insurance and security surcharges can rise, and owners may require escorts or refuse particular voyages. Those costs are incorporated into delivered crude and product prices, even if the number of barrels ultimately reaches customers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Longer routes also reduce effective tanker availability. A vessel making one extended voyage cannot load another cargo as quickly, so freight rates can rise across connected routes. Buyers may then compete for both oil and shipping capacity.

4. Alternative pipelines can replace only part of normal flows

Some Gulf exports can bypass the Strait through pipelines to ports on the Red Sea or the Gulf of Oman. The IEA’s 2026 factsheet estimated 3.5–5.5 million bpd of potential alternative crude-export capacity through Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. An EIA analysis published in 2025 estimated about 2.6 million bpd of capacity available to bypass the Strait under its assumptions.

These figures should not be added together or treated as a permanent capacity guarantee. They refer to different assessments, operating conditions and reference periods. Pipeline nameplate capacity may be limited by available storage, port loading, crude quality, maintenance, destination constraints or the time required to redirect flows. In either estimate, bypass routes cover only a portion of a roughly 20-million-bpd 2025 flow.

5. Spare production may be stranded behind the chokepoint

Producing more crude does not solve a transport problem if the additional barrels must still cross Hormuz. The IEA warned that, during a prolonged disruption, most of the world’s spare crude-production capacity could become unavailable because much of it is located in Gulf states that depend on the Strait for exports. This is why the market can face both a shipping bottleneck and a loss of practical spare capacity at the same time.

What the 2026 observations show—and what they do not

The EIA’s August 2026 outlook recorded a sharp reduction in actual traffic during the conflict: oil and petroleum liquids transported through Hormuz averaged 4.9 million bpd in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 21.6 million bpd in the fourth quarter of 2025, before the conflict. These are period averages, not a live reading for every day and not a permanent new normal.

The same EIA report said Brent spot prices reached as high as $105 per barrel on July 23, 2026, after renewed tanker attacks and a related reduction in shipments. That is a dated observation associated with a specific episode. It is not a guaranteed response to every future attack, a forecast, or a fixed conversion from missing barrels to dollars.

Measure Figure Qualification

Potential bypass capacity 3.5–5.5 million bpd IEA 2026 estimate for Saudi and UAE pipelines
Bypass capacity available About 2.6 million bpd EIA 2025 assessment under its stated assumptions
Hormuz flows during conflict 4.9 million bpd EIA average for 2Q26
Pre-conflict comparison 21.6 million bpd EIA average for 4Q25
Brent spot Up to $105 per barrel EIA observation on July 23, 2026, after renewed tanker attacks

Why prices do not rise one-for-one with lost barrels

A headline loss of one million bpd does not mechanically produce a particular dollar increase. Markets balance the shock through several channels:

  • Commercial inventories: Refineries and traders can draw stored crude or products while replacement cargoes are arranged.
  • Emergency stocks: IEA member countries agreed in 2026 to release 400 million barrels of emergency stocks to offset disruption. The effect depends on release timing, regional distribution and how long the drawdown can continue.
  • Alternative routes: Bypass pipelines and longer sea routes can preserve some exports, although neither replaces all normal Strait traffic.
  • Other suppliers: Producers outside the Gulf may increase exports or redirect cargoes, subject to production, pipeline, port and tanker constraints.
  • Refinery adjustments: Refineries can change crude slates, substitute products or defer maintenance, but equipment and fuel specifications limit how quickly they can adapt.
  • Demand response: High prices can reduce discretionary fuel use, encourage efficiency and cause industrial users to switch fuels. These responses usually take time.
  • Expectations about reopening: If traders expect passage to normalize soon, prices may retreat before physical flows fully recover. A credible prolonged closure has the opposite effect.

These buffers explain why a severe security event can produce a large initial move that later moderates, or why a seemingly small attack can have an outsized effect if it changes expectations about insurance, tanker availability or future access.

Why diesel and jet fuel may react differently from crude

Aggregate oil balances can look manageable while a particular product is tight. The IEA reported that diesel and jet fuel were more vulnerable than overall global oil balances in its 2026 analysis. Their prices depend on regional inventories, refinery capacity, seasonal demand, military and aviation activity, and the ability to move finished products to the affected market.

A refinery may be able to replace a missing crude cargo but still face a shortage of a specific diesel grade. Conversely, a crude price spike does not guarantee the same percentage increase in every finished fuel. Product markets must be assessed separately from the headline crude benchmark.

How to compare different Hormuz disruption scenarios

Scenario Immediate market issue Likely balancing questions
Threat or isolated attack Higher risk perception, insurance and freight costs Do ships continue sailing, and does the threat spread?
Short-lived traffic slowdown Delayed cargoes and temporary inventory draw Can stored barrels and other suppliers cover the delay?
Reduced tanker traffic for weeks Material regional shortages and tighter global benchmarks How much bypass capacity, emergency stock and rerouting is usable?
Prolonged closure Loss of a large share of Gulf exports plus stranded spare capacity Can alternative suppliers, demand cuts and refinery changes offset the gap?

The relevant comparison is not simply “open” versus “closed.” Analysts must track the actual number of tankers moving, the type of cargo affected, the duration of delays and whether insurers and ports continue to function.

Global benchmark prices versus local fuel prices

Brent and other benchmark prices are international indicators. A local pump price also includes taxes, refining margins, storage, transportation, currency movements and retailer costs. The evidence cited here establishes how Hormuz risk can affect global benchmarks; it does not establish a universal delay or percentage pass-through to any country’s retail fuel price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Asian refiners may feel the physical shortage first because most Hormuz cargoes are Asia-bound, while traders elsewhere can still bid up a globally traded benchmark. The timing and size of local effects will vary by inventory, contracts, government taxes and access to alternative crude.

What remains uncertain

There is no fixed price increase per attack, no universal lag between a Brent move and consumer fuel prices, and no basis for treating the EIA’s August 2026 snapshot as today’s exact flow. Security conditions and tanker traffic can change quickly. Any current assessment should use the latest shipping, inventory, official reserve-release and benchmark data rather than extrapolating the 2Q26 average.

The practical answer

Attacks near Hormuz affect global oil prices by turning a major export route into a source of physical scarcity, delivery delays and uncertainty. Markets reprice immediately because the Strait carried about 20 million bpd in the IEA’s 2025 baseline, while bypass routes and spare production cover only part of that volume. The eventual price depends on duration, actual traffic, inventories, emergency releases, alternative suppliers, refinery flexibility and demand response—not on the mere fact that an attack occurred.
