If a photo is visible in your phone’s gallery but missing from Google Photos, it may still be only on the device. The usual causes are a different Google Account, backup that is off or incomplete, an Android folder that is not selected for backup, an archived item, or a photo in Trash. Start by checking the account and backup status, then follow the branch that matches where the file originated.

Google Photos Help states: “Your missing photos or videos may not be backed up to Google Photos.” That distinction matters: a local copy, a cloud-library item, and a deleted item require different fixes.

What “missing” can mean

Google Photos does not automatically make every image visible in every account. A picture can be present in a phone’s manufacturer gallery or an app-specific folder without having been uploaded to the Google Photos account you are viewing. It can also be uploaded but hidden from the normal library, waiting for backup to finish, or already removed to Trash.

1. Confirm the Google Account and backup state

Before trying recovery, make sure you are looking at the account that actually received the upload. Google Photos can be installed on a phone with several Google Accounts, while backup is configured for only one of them.

Check the account at the top of Google Photos

  1. Open Google Photos.
  2. Tap the profile picture or account control at the top.
  3. Note the Google Account currently shown.
  4. If you use more than one account, switch to each account that might have had backup enabled and search its library.

Do not assume that adding another account to the phone moved older photos into that account. The backup-account setting determines where new uploads are stored, so an account mismatch can make a successfully backed-up photo look lost.

Open Backup and read the library status

  1. Open the profile menu and choose Photos settings.
  2. Open Backup.
  3. Confirm that Backup is on and check the backup account shown there.
  4. Read the status at the top of the library and leave the app connected until the status is complete when an upload is still running.

Google’s status labels distinguish no backup, preparing, backing up, complete, and stopped. “Preparing,” “backing up,” or “stopped” means the cloud copy may not be available yet. A complete status means the current queue has finished, but it does not prove that every local folder was selected or that the file was backed up under the account you are viewing.

Check an individual photo’s status

Open the suspected photo in Google Photos, or open the local copy and compare it with what is online. Google says a backed-up item carries a “Backed up” indicator. If that indicator is absent, treat the file as not uploaded rather than as a cloud item that needs recovery. Resolve the account, folder, or backup-state issue first, then allow the upload to finish.

When a photo is important, verify the individual “Backed up” indicator before deleting the local copy or changing the source folder. A phone gallery view alone is not proof that Google Photos has a cloud copy.

What each status tells you

  • No backup: the service is not currently protecting new local files; enable Backup before expecting them online.
  • Preparing: Google Photos is getting the library ready, so the missing item may still be in the queue.
  • Backing up: uploads are active; leave the app or browser process running and check again after the status changes.
  • Complete: the current queue has finished. Check the folder selection and account if a particular file is still absent.
  • Stopped: uploading has halted; resolve the displayed backup issue and recheck the item’s status.

2. On Android, inspect device folders from other apps

Android phones and tablets can store images outside the camera folder. Messaging apps, downloads, screenshots, editing apps, and other sources may each have their own device folder. Google Photos can show those files under the device view without uploading them to your account.

Find the local folder

  1. Open Google Photos.
  2. Tap Collections.
  3. Choose On this device.
  4. Open the folder that contains the missing image.

If the file appears in On this device, you have established that it exists on the Android device. You have not yet established that it is backed up. This is the key distinction for photos created or downloaded by another app.

Turn on backup for the folder

  1. Open the Google Photos profile menu.
  2. Choose Photos settings, then Backup.
  3. Open Back up device folders.
  4. Enable the switch for each folder whose contents should appear in the Google Photos account.
  5. Return to the library and wait for the backup status to finish.

Google notes that selected device folders are backed up in addition to the camera folder and can be controlled individually. Select only folders you intend to keep in the cloud; enabling every folder can upload duplicates, temporary files, or media you did not mean to retain. After enabling a folder, check the individual photo for the “Backed up” indicator instead of relying only on its local thumbnail.

This device-folder path is specific to Android phones and tablets. It is not an identical workflow on iPhone or iPad, where Google directs users to the Google Photos app and its own backup process.

Camera folder versus other folders

The camera folder and an app folder are separate backup decisions. A complete status after camera uploads does not mean screenshots, downloads, or messaging-app images were included. If only one category is missing, compare that category with the switches under Back up device folders rather than repeatedly toggling the main Backup switch.

3. On iPhone or iPad, keep Google Photos open during backup

For iPhone and iPad, begin with the same account and status checks: open Google Photos, inspect the profile account, and go to Photos settings > Backup. Confirm that Backup is enabled and look at the status shown for the library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google specifically advises iPhone and iPad users not to quit the Photos app while it is backing up. If you swipe the app away or force-close it during an in-progress upload, the process can stop before the missing images reach the cloud. Keep Google Photos on screen or available in the foreground while the status changes to complete, especially for a large first upload or a batch of recently added photos.

After the status completes, open one of the previously missing images and look for the “Backed up” indicator. If it is still absent, recheck the account shown in the profile menu; a completed backup in one account does not place the item in another account’s library.

Do not use the Android device-folder instructions on an iPhone or iPad. The relevant source is the Apple Photos library exposed to the Google Photos app, and Google’s guidance is to use that app’s backup process rather than treating the library as an Android folder.

4. Look in Archive and Trash

When the account and backup checks do not explain a photo that was once in Google Photos, check the two places that remove items from the ordinary library view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Archive hides an item without deleting it

  1. Open Google Photos and tap Collections.
  2. Choose Archive.
  3. Open the missing photo if it is listed there.
  4. Use the unarchive command to return it to the main library.

An archived photo remains in the account but is intentionally absent from the usual library view. Unarchiving changes its visibility; it does not repair a missing upload. If the photo is not in Archive, continue to Trash rather than repeatedly changing library filters.

Trash has a limited recovery window

  1. Open Collections in Google Photos.
  2. Choose Trash.
  3. Select the photo or video.
  4. Choose Restore if the item is present and you want it back in the library.

Google Photos Help states that items in Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days. Once an item has been permanently deleted from Trash, it cannot be restored through Google Photos. Therefore, do not promise recovery based only on the fact that a photo used to exist in the library: recovery is possible only while the item remains in the recoverable Trash state.

If Trash is empty and the photo has no “Backed up” indicator in the correct account, the remaining explanation is usually that the file was never uploaded, was uploaded under another account, or was permanently deleted. Google Photos cannot recreate a cloud copy that was never backed up.

Archive and Trash answer different questions

Archive is a visibility setting: the item remains part of the account and can be unarchived. Trash is a deletion state with a 30-day recovery limit. Searching Archive will not find an item that was deleted, and restoring from Trash will not help if the item was only archived. Check both in that order before concluding that the cloud copy is gone.

5. Check a manufacturer’s default-gallery connection on Android

Some Android devices connect the manufacturer’s default gallery to Google Photos. In that arrangement, the gallery can display or act on cloud photos through the connected Google Account. An incorrect account selection or a broken connection can make edits, deletions, or restored photos appear out of sync.

Verify the connection and account

  • Open the phone’s default gallery settings or its Google Photos connection control.
  • Confirm that the gallery is still connected to Google Photos.
  • Confirm that the intended Google Account is selected, especially if several accounts are on the phone.

Google documents a “Review out-of-sync changes” flow for some edits, deletions, or restores made on photos.google.com or another device. Use that review when the default gallery reports a synchronization discrepancy and follow its choices before accepting changes. This is a targeted fix for the default-gallery integration, not a universal solution for a photo that was never backed up or is missing from every Google Photos view.

If the image is absent in Google Photos on the web and in the app, a gallery connection review cannot create an upload. First establish that the file has a “Backed up” indicator or is still present in an Android device folder selected for backup.

6. Upload computer folders with the current browser workflow

A computer folder is a separate source from a phone’s camera roll. Google’s current computer instructions use Google Photos in a browser: select folders at photos.google.com, grant the requested browser permissions, and keep the browser tab or Photos web app open while the described background backup runs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use photos.google.com to select the folder

  1. Open photos.google.com and sign in to the Google Account that should receive the files.
  2. Use the computer folder-backup option to select the folder containing the photos.
  3. Grant the browser permissions requested by Google Photos.
  4. Leave the browser tab or Photos web app open while the upload process runs.
  5. Return to the library and verify that the uploaded items show the “Backed up” indicator.

If the folder contains several nested locations, check each intended folder rather than assuming that selecting a parent location has included every source. Keep the computer awake and the selected folder available until the browser-based process reports completion; closing the tab interrupts the process described by Google’s instructions.

Do not rely on the old Drive for desktop Photos backup

Google’s computer help page says that Google Drive for desktop ended support for Google Photos backup on August 10, 2026. That date has passed, so a workflow that depended on Drive for desktop may no longer upload computer photos to Google Photos. Use the current browser-based folder selection instead.

Apple Photos Library is not supported by this folder workflow

Google’s computer instructions state that Apple Photos Library is not supported through the computer folder-backup process. For photos held in Apple Photos on an iPhone or iPad, use the Google Photos app and its backup process rather than trying to select the Apple library as an ordinary computer folder.

Computer-upload pitfalls

  • Signing in to the wrong Google Account sends the files to a different library than the one you are checking.
  • Closing the browser tab before the process completes can interrupt the described upload.
  • Assuming Drive for desktop still handles Google Photos backup can leave a folder unchanged after the August 10, 2026 cutoff.
  • Selecting an Apple Photos Library as a normal folder is unsupported by this workflow.

A practical order for diagnosing a stubborn case

Work from the least destructive check to the most limited recovery option. First identify the account, then establish whether backup is on and whether the library is still processing. On Android, inspect On this device before assuming a local-only image is missing from the cloud. On iPhone or iPad, allow the app to remain open until backup finishes. Next check Archive and Trash, then investigate a connected manufacturer gallery or a computer-folder upload if those are the source of the image.

Do not empty Trash while you are still investigating, and do not delete a local original until Google Photos shows it as backed up in the intended account. These two verification points prevent a local-only file from being mistaken for a protected cloud copy.

Use the symptom to choose the branch

  • Only downloaded images are absent on Android: inspect On this device and enable the relevant folder.
  • Everything stopped uploading: check the account, Backup switch, and status label before changing individual folders.
  • An older item vanished from the timeline: check Archive, then Trash.
  • The phone gallery disagrees with Google Photos: review the manufacturer-gallery connection and account.
  • Only desktop files are absent: repeat the current browser folder workflow and leave it open until completion.

When the photo still cannot be found

If the image is absent from the correct account, has no “Backed up” indicator, is not in the relevant Android device folder, is not in Archive or Trash, and was not completed through the computer upload path, Google Photos has no confirmed cloud copy to display. At that point, look for the original in the app or device that created it, an operating-system backup, a computer folder, or another storage location. Google Photos support cannot restore an item that was never uploaded or was permanently deleted from Trash.

For future uploads, periodically verify the backup account, keep required Android folders enabled, wait for a complete status, and spot-check important files for the “Backed up” indicator. Those checks distinguish a real cloud backup from a thumbnail that exists only on one device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a photo in my phone gallery but not Google Photos?

The file may be local only, stored in an Android folder that is not selected for backup, still uploading, or associated with another Google Account. Check the account, Backup status, the individual “Backed up” indicator, and Collections > On this device on Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I find photos hidden from the Google Photos timeline?

Open Collections > Archive and unarchive the item if it is there. If it was deleted, check Collections > Trash and restore it while it remains available.

How long do deleted photos stay in Google Photos Trash?

Google Photos Help says items in Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days. Items permanently deleted from Trash cannot be restored through Google Photos.

Why are Android screenshots or downloads missing from Google Photos?

They may be in a device folder that is not included in backup. Open Collections > On this device, then enable the desired folder under Photos settings > Backup > Back up device folders.

Should I close Google Photos while an iPhone backup is running?

No. Google specifically advises iPhone and iPad users not to quit Google Photos during backup. Keep the app open until the status reaches complete, then verify the individual photo shows “Backed up.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Drive for desktop still back up computer photos to Google Photos?

Google’s current computer help page says Drive for desktop ended support for Google Photos backup on August 10, 2026. Use the browser-based folder selection at photos.google.com instead, and keep the tab or Photos web app open while it runs.

The Bottom Line

Start with the Google Account and Backup status, then verify the photo itself says “Backed up.” On Android, check On this device and enable the correct folders; on iPhone or iPad, keep Google Photos open during backup. Check Archive and the 30-day Trash window before investigating gallery sync or computer uploads. If the item was never backed up or has been permanently deleted from Trash, Google Photos cannot restore it.
