Most blurred locations appear in Google Street View, not because the map has deleted a place, but because imagery has been automatically masked for privacy, blurred after a user request, or restricted under local security rules. Faces and license plates are routinely blurred by Google’s systems; homes, vehicles and other features can receive an additional, permanent blur when an eligible request is approved.
What the blur actually covers
Street View cars capture panoramas from public roads. Those panoramas can show homes, people, cars and signs even though the underlying map still contains the address, business listing or coordinates. A blur normally changes what is visible in the Street View image; it does not remove the place from Google Maps.
Google’s privacy guidance says Street View takes steps to protect the privacy and anonymity of individuals. Its image-recognition technology is designed to identify and blur faces and vehicle number plates. The result may appear as a soft, pixelated patch that follows the object across a panorama.
Three reasons Google Maps imagery is blurred
Automatic privacy masking
Google applies automatic blur to identifiable faces and license plates in Street View. This processing is intended to operate at scale, so the person or vehicle owner does not normally have to submit a request. Automated recognition can occasionally blur another object that resembles a face or plate, or miss an item that is difficult to identify in a low-quality frame.

A user-requested privacy blur
Google lets eligible requesters ask for a stronger blur on a home, vehicle, full body, face, license plate or another identifiable feature. A reviewer assesses the report and can apply the blur to the relevant Street View imagery. The requester might be the resident, owner or another person with a legitimate privacy concern; Google’s form determines what supporting information is needed.
For a residential request, Google’s current instructions require proof of address. Accepted examples include a utility or bank document, lease, insurance document or property-tax record. The requester should redact names, account numbers, payment information and health information before uploading evidence.

Local legal or security restrictions
Some governments impose additional limits on imagery of military installations or other sensitive sites. In a 2026 South Korean decision, authorities required Google to blur satellite and aerial images of military and other protected locations. That illustrates a country-specific regulatory condition; it is not evidence that Google universally hides every military base worldwide. The exact coverage and level of masking can therefore vary by jurisdiction and by imagery type.

How to request a blur on your home or another feature
Use Street View rather than the standard map pin. The available labels can differ slightly by device, but the process follows Google’s current reporting flow:

- Open Google Maps and enter the address or place.
- Open the Street View panorama showing the home, vehicle, person or other feature.
- Select Report a problem (on some interfaces this appears through the three-dot menu or a link beneath the imagery).
- Reposition the report frame so the object to be blurred is clearly inside it.
- Choose the relevant category, such as a home, face, license plate, vehicle or another object.
- Describe the privacy concern and submit the report.
- If the request concerns a residence, provide the requested proof of address with sensitive information redacted.
Google reviews the submission before applying a user-requested blur. A report does not erase the address, change ownership records or remove the map coordinate; it targets the imagery identified in the request.
Why one view may be blurred while another is not
- Different imagery dates: Street View can contain older and newer panoramas. A blur may have been applied to one capture while another date has not yet been updated.
- Different image sources: Street-level, aerial and satellite imagery are separate products and can be subject to different privacy or legal rules.
- Object movement: Automatic detection follows a face or plate in a panorama, but an object can be partly outside the frame or obscured by glare, foliage or motion.
- Map versus panorama: A place marker, address or business listing can remain visible even when the Street View view of the property is blurred.
Can a house or location be unblurred?
For a blur Google has received and applied after a privacy request, the current Google Maps help wording is unequivocal: “When we receive and apply a blur request, the blur is permanent.” Do not submit a request expecting to toggle it off later. Automatic masking and regulatory restrictions follow different review paths, but viewers should not assume that a visible blur can be removed simply by changing a map setting.

What a blurred military or government site means
A blurred sensitive site may reflect a local rule rather than a global Google policy. The South Korean 2026 example involved satellite and aerial images and was tied to that country’s legal decision. In another country, a site may be visible, partially obscured, represented by lower-resolution imagery or covered only in Street View. The blur alone cannot establish who ordered it or whether the location is classified.

Practical privacy checks
- Confirm that you are looking at Street View and note the imagery date.
- Check whether the patch covers a face or plate (usually automatic) or an entire home or object (often a requested blur).
- Look at the map listing separately; its presence does not contradict a Street View privacy blur.
- If requesting a residential blur, gather acceptable address proof and redact names, account numbers, payment data and health information.
- Expect an approved user-requested blur to remain permanent.
