New plasma TVs are no longer being made: Panasonic ended panel production in December 2013, and LG and Samsung followed in 2014. Plasma did not disappear because its picture was universally poor. LCD televisions improved in brightness, price, efficiency, size and resolution, while their manufacturing scale grew and demand for plasma declined.
What made plasma TVs different?
Plasma displays produced light at the pixel. Each screen contained tiny gas-filled cells; an electrical discharge made phosphors in those cells emit visible light. LCDs work differently: they control light from a separate backlight. That self-emissive design helped plasma deliver deep contrast, broad viewing angles and smooth motion.
Plasma’s early advantage was size. During the shift away from bulky CRT televisions, it made large, flat, wall-mountable screens practical while producing large LCD panels was difficult or expensive. TechRadar reports that Fujitsu was producing 42-inch consumer plasma displays in 1997. Panasonic began mass production of plasma display panels in 2001 and expanded capacity in the following years.

There was no single cause. Improving LCD performance and economics reinforced plasma’s disadvantages, and the market increasingly favored the competing format.

LCD sets became brighter, slimmer and less expensive
As LCD technology improved, televisions became brighter and cheaper to produce. LED backlights helped make LCD sets thinner and lighter. These traits mattered in stores, where bright displays competed under strong lighting, and at home in rooms with daylight or glare.
Energy use and production scale worked against plasma
Plasma power consumption varied with the image and was often higher than LCD’s. LCD also benefited from a broader manufacturing base and greater development investment, which helped manufacturers lower costs and improve products. Plasma makers faced the expense of keeping pace as demand weakened.
Buyers began expecting higher resolutions
The market moved toward 4K LCD/LED televisions, while plasma remained at 1080p. That made plasma less appealing to shoppers looking for a large, sharper screen. Resolution was one part of the shift, not a standalone explanation for plasma’s end.

Plasma’s image strengths did not outweigh its commercial disadvantages
In a dim home-theater room, plasma’s contrast, viewing angles and motion handling could be compelling. But lower peak brightness was a disadvantage in bright rooms, and sets were generally heavier and less energy-efficient than competing LCD models. Those trade-offs became harder to sell as LCD televisions improved and cost less.
How did plasma go from breakthrough to discontinued?
| Year | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1997 | TechRadar reports Fujitsu was producing 42-inch plasma displays in serious volume. |
| 2001 | Panasonic says mass production of plasma display panels began at its First Ibaraki Plant. |
| 2005 | Panasonic’s first Amagasaki plant phase reached a reported capacity of 125,000 panels per month by November. |
| 2006 | Panasonic reported combined monthly capacity of 460,000 panels across four plants after an expansion phase. |
| 2007 | LCD took the market-share lead, according to RTINGS. |
| 2010 | TechRadar, citing Omdia, reports that plasma shipments peaked at 18.4 million units. |
| October–December 2013 | Panasonic publicly confirmed its exit; panel production ended in December. |
| 2014 | Panasonic, LG and Samsung had all stopped plasma production, according to RTINGS. |
The figures in the table measure different things: Omdia’s global shipment numbers are reported by TechRadar, while Panasonic’s monthly figures describe the company’s own manufacturing capacity. TechRadar also attributes six million plasma units shipped globally per year to Omdia in 2005. The Omdia data was not independently checked against the original dataset.
Why did Panasonic stop making plasma?
Panasonic pointed to rapid development of large-screen LCDs, severe price competition and declining demand. In its 2013 explanation, reproduced by What Hi-Fi?, the company said “it was judged that continuing the business would be difficult and a decision was made to stop production”. The decision reflected a deteriorating business case, not a claim that plasma could not produce an attractive picture.

Display analyst David Gray, quoted by TechRadar, summarized the competitive pressure this way: “Essentially, the fundamental problem was the pace of innovation”. As LCD improved and gained scale, plasma manufacturers had a harder time competing on the combination of price, brightness, power use and resolution buyers wanted.
Are OLED TVs the same as plasma?
No. Plasma and OLED are distinct technologies, though both produce light at the pixel rather than relying on an LCD panel with a backlight. Both can offer wide viewing angles, and OLED can also experience image retention. An LED TV is an LCD television that uses LED backlighting; “LED” does not mean that the pixels themselves are LEDs.

Yes. The end of production did not make existing sets stop working. Their remaining life depends on the individual television and its condition; there is no single precise lifespan that applies to every model. Panasonic advises that phosphor displays lose brightness over time and that a static bright image can leave a permanent shadow. It says, “All displays that use phosphors lose brightness over time.”

To reduce image-retention risk, avoid leaving paused games or persistent channel logos on screen for long periods, and use moderate brightness and contrast settings. Parts and repair options vary by model and location; their present availability is not established here.
What should you consider when replacing one?
Compare current televisions against how and where you watch rather than assuming one technology recreates every plasma strength. Consider room brightness and glare, screen size, resolution, energy use and budget. A bright room may make peak brightness especially important; for a dim room, contrast and viewing angle may matter more. Current prices and model recommendations require up-to-date product research.
