Yes, the left and right DualSense Edge stick modules are interchangeable. Sony says either module can be installed on either side of a DualSense Edge controller. The replacement is a complete, Edge-specific module—not a regular DualSense joystick assembly and not a universal controller part. Reports of stockouts are real for particular sellers and dates, but there is no published Sony explanation proving a worldwide shortage, discontinued production, scalper activity or any other single cause.
What the replacement module actually is
The product Sony calls the Stick Module for DualSense Edge Wireless Controller is a removable replacement assembly for the DualSense Edge. Sony lists model CFI-ZSM1 on its UK accessory page. The package listing identifies one module, a standard stick cap and a user manual.
This is different from replacing a cap. A cap is the user-contact surface that you can change for feel or height; the module is the mechanism underneath, including the stick sensor assembly and its connector. Sony describes the module as the replacement route when a stick fails or stops working.

Compatibility is deliberately narrow. Sony says the module is for the DualSense Edge wireless controller only. A standard PlayStation 5 DualSense controller has a different internal design and is not made compatible by buying a CFI-ZSM1 module. Third-party controller parts should not be assumed to fit merely because they are advertised as “PS5 joystick” replacements.

- Maintain your DualSense Edge wireless controller’s great performance with this replacement stick module.
Are the left and right modules interchangeable?
Yes. Sony’s official replacement instructions state: “Left and right stick modules are interchangeable and can be attached to either side.” There are not separate Sony left-module and right-module SKUs that you must match. If you have one working module and one failed module, the working one can be moved to the other side for testing or use.
Interchangeability does not mean that every joystick part is interchangeable. It applies to Sony’s DualSense Edge stick-module format. The module still has to be the correct Edge replacement, and the controller must be powered down and opened using the specified release mechanism.
Why people say the modules are hard to find
Stockout reports are tied to particular places and dates
Community posts have used phrases such as “Stick Module always out stock” and “Where are the Dualsense Edge stick modules?” Those posts document a practical purchasing problem, but they do not prove that inventory is absent everywhere or at all times.

A stock-history tracker recorded a US PlayStation Direct listing as out of stock on February 6, 2025. That is evidence of a dated US listing status, not a current inventory report. Retail inventory can differ by country, warehouse, seller and time of day.
No verified public explanation identifies the cause
Sony has not published an explanation for the reported stockouts in the material available for this topic. Consequently, claims that Sony stopped making the module, that scalpers caused the shortage, or that a global supply interruption is continuing go beyond the evidence. A short listing at one retailer can result from a local shipment delay, demand exceeding that retailer’s allocation, or a page being temporarily unavailable; none of those possibilities has been established as the general cause.
The product is a specialist spare part
The Edge module is not a standard DualSense component and is sold separately from the controller. That narrower audience and the need to stock a complete replacement assembly make availability more variable than for ordinary accessories. This explains why a controller can remain on sale while its replacement part is temporarily absent, but it does not establish a permanent shortage.

What Sony’s distribution history tells you
In an October 2022 launch announcement, Sony said replacement modules would be sold through PlayStation Direct in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg from January 26, 2023. Participating retailers were scheduled to follow on February 23, 2023. Those dates explain the original sales channels; they are not a live stock list or a promise that every channel still carries inventory.
A dated capture of Sony’s UK accessory page showed a price of £19.99 for the module. Treat that as a historical UK listing price, not a guaranteed current price, a price in another country or a recurring promotion. Taxes, delivery charges and regional pricing can change the amount you pay.
How to check availability without being misled
- Choose the market first. Open the PlayStation Direct site or Sony’s accessory page for your country. A US result does not establish stock in the UK, Europe or another region.
- Search the exact product name and model. Look for “Stick Module for DualSense Edge Wireless Controller” and model CFI-ZSM1. Avoid results that mention only a generic PS5 joystick.
- Check the seller and condition. Prefer Sony or a participating established retailer. On a marketplace, verify the seller identity, whether the part is new or used, the return policy and the exact model printed in the listing.
- Record the date and time. Stock pages change quickly. Note whether the page says in stock, unavailable, backordered or merely allows an email alert.
- Compare the delivered total. A low headline price may exclude shipping, taxes or a marketplace premium. The dated £19.99 UK figure cannot be used to judge a current total elsewhere.
- Do not treat a restock rumor as a schedule. Neither the launch announcement nor the stockout record provides a future replenishment date.
If an official page is unavailable, check the established retailers identified for your region, but keep the distinction between a retailer’s own inventory and a third-party resale listing. A third-party listing can remain visible after the seller has no stock, or can describe a different part.

How to replace a DualSense Edge stick module
Use Sony’s current support instructions and warnings. The procedure swaps the complete module; it is not a soldering repair.
- Turn the controller off. Confirm that the player indicator is not lit. Disconnect the USB cable.
- Discharge static electricity. Touch a grounded metal object before handling the module and work on a clean, stable surface.
- Remove the front cover. Turn the controller over and operate the rear RELEASE latch as shown in Sony’s instructions. Lift the front cover away without forcing it.
- Raise the module release lever. The lever unlocks the module from its connector and guide rails.
- Slide out the old module. Pull it along the grooves. Do not touch the electrical connectors or scrape them against the housing.
- Insert the replacement. Align the new module with the grooves and slide it in until it clicks into place. Because the modules are left/right interchangeable, you can install the same CFI-ZSM1 design on either side.
- Lower the lever. This secures the module. Check that it is fully seated rather than relying only on visual alignment.
- Refit the cover and test. Reinstall the front cover, reconnect the controller and test stick movement in a game or the console’s controller settings.
Stop if the module will not slide smoothly, the lever will not close or the connector appears damaged. Forcing the mechanism can damage the controller. Sony specifically warns against touching the connectors; a third-party teardown should not override the official procedure.

Common mistakes that waste money
- Buying a cap instead of a module: a cap changes the grip surface; it does not replace a failed sensor assembly.
- Assuming “PS5 compatible” means Edge compatible: the regular DualSense and the DualSense Edge are different controllers.
- Ordering by side: Sony does not require a left-specific or right-specific module. A listing that claims a different Sony side SKU deserves verification.
- Trusting an undated “in stock” result: search indexes and stale marketplace pages can outlive the inventory they describe.
- Installing with power connected: Sony’s sequence begins with the player indicator off and the USB cable disconnected.
- Touching the contacts: static discharge or contamination can create a new fault while you are replacing the old part.
- Forcing the release lever or rails: resistance usually means the module is misaligned or not fully unlocked.
What to do when a replacement is unavailable
First, confirm that the problem is in the module rather than the cap, a software setting or a temporary connection issue. If the stick drifts, fails to register or behaves inconsistently on one side, note the symptom and test the controller with the suspect module moved to the other position only if you can do so safely and follow Sony’s procedure. Since either side accepts the module, a fault that follows the module points toward the module; a fault that stays with the controller position needs further service diagnosis.

When no official listing is available, set an alert on the relevant Sony or retailer page and check more than one authorized channel. Avoid paying a large premium for an unverified listing unless you have confirmed the model, authenticity and return rights. The available evidence does not support a guaranteed restock date, so a seller promising one should be treated cautiously.
If the controller is under warranty or the connector, rails or lever are damaged, contact Sony support before opening it further. Replacing a complete module is the documented user-service path; this information does not establish that an individual module can be economically repaired or that an unrelated stick assembly will work.
Bottom line on the shortage question
“Hard to find” is an accurate description for some buyers at specific times, including the documented US out-of-stock status on February 6, 2025. It is not proof of a universal or permanent shortage. Check stock in your own country immediately before buying, identify the seller and date, and use the model number rather than generic joystick terminology.

For the compatibility question, the answer is definitive: Sony’s DualSense Edge stick module can be attached to either the left or right side, but it belongs only to the DualSense Edge platform. The safe replacement is the complete Edge module, installed with the controller disconnected and the official release-and-slide procedure.
