Apps can use much more storage after installation than their download size suggests, but that does not mean the typical 2026 app occupies gigabytes. An app’s download, installed files, accumulated data and runtime memory are different measurements. Feature growth, bundled dependencies and rich assets can enlarge the app itself; caches, offline downloads and other data can add space as you use it.
Why are apps so big now?
Software can grow as developers add features, libraries, images, audio, video, language resources and support for different devices. Some of that content may not be needed by every user, but a single package can include it anyway. Third-party libraries also bring code and resources that an app depends on, whether or not every part is used in a particular session.
A peer-reviewed study by Bijlani, Ramachandran and Campbell analyzed Android app listings from 2014 through 2019. It found an average of 14.14 Activities per app in 2019, up from 10.18 in 2014. Activities served as a proxy for features; they are not a count of distinct features visible to every user. The authors also described growth in third-party libraries and universal packages containing resources for different device architectures and languages. Bundling support for many devices can make an app available across a wider range of hardware, while adding resources a particular phone may not need. Richer assets and more code can also add weight. But a large permitted package is not evidence that most apps reach that size: current Google Play rules allow up to 4 GB of cumulative install-time modules and assets, with separate allowances for deferred asset packs and a 34 GB maximum compressed download size. Why do apps take up more space after installation?
The download is only one part of an app’s storage footprint. Installation can create additional files, and use can add caches, downloaded content, databases, logs and other app data. Streaming and social apps may cache or prefetch content; apps can also store analytics, crash reports, diagnostic logs or advertising files. Which items an app keeps, and for how long, varies.
In the same study, a fresh install of each of the top 30 Google Play apps examined occupied 1.5× to 5× the corresponding package size. The authors associated the difference with auxiliary files created for performance. This result describes that sample and period, not every app or current app behavior. What does “app size” actually mean?

For a fair comparison between apps or versions, identify the platform, device, app version and measurement date, and say whether the figure is compressed download size, installed size or installed size plus user data. Comparing a store download number with a phone’s storage figure can mix unlike measurements.

Does a larger app mean worse performance?
Not necessarily. Disk space, runtime memory and speed are related only in specific ways. Android’s code-bloat guidance explains that unnecessary initializations or unused libraries can affect startup performance and baseline memory usage, but an app’s storage footprint alone does not establish how it performs on a given device. The guide includes an intentionally synthetic R8 example: generated dead code shrinks from about 30,000 KB to 2,000 KB after optimization. It also reports a code-madvising trace totaling about 21 milliseconds versus 0.004 milliseconds on a Pixel 10a under ideal idle conditions. These illustrations are not representative production benchmarks; device and system load affect results. They show why developers measure code and performance separately, not what users should expect from a typical app.

How can you see which apps are using the most storage?
Use your device’s own storage screen to inspect app-by-app usage. The exact labels and paths depend on the phone model, operating-system version and manufacturer, so look for the system’s Settings section for storage or device care rather than relying on a single universal menu path.
- Check the app’s listed size and data separately when your device shows both.
- Look for offline music, video, maps or other downloads inside the app that created them.
- Review apps you no longer use and remove them if you do not need their data.
- Use an app’s own storage controls or the operating system’s supported options when clearing files.
Deleting app data can remove downloaded content, saved files or local state. Avoid assuming that every item labeled “cache” is safe or that a third-party cleaner is a reliable fix; inspect what the app or system says will be removed.

How do developers reduce app size?
Optimization works best when teams measure what users actually receive, then target unnecessary code, assets or delivery choices without removing functionality users need.
- Measure the release on real variants. Check download and installed sizes for relevant device configurations, rather than relying only on a local archive. Apple recommends per-variant measurement and monitoring app size and Documents & Data across releases. Apple measurement guidance
- Deliver only what users need. Android App Bundles and modular or on-demand delivery can keep optional features and assets out of an initial install when they are not required by every user. - Remove dead code and inspect dependencies. Android’s R8 tools can shrink code, while dependency review can identify libraries or resources that are no longer needed. The synthetic example above should not be treated as a promise of a particular reduction.
- Optimize large assets. Review images, audio, video and other resources, then validate the resulting release on the devices and variants you support.
- Track storage and memory independently. Monitor app size and accumulated data as well as runtime memory and performance, since improving one measure does not guarantee improvement in the others. Are apps really eating gigabytes in 2026?
There is not enough evidence here to claim that the typical app in 2026 takes up gigabytes, or to give a representative cross-platform average. The historical ACM study ended its app-listing analysis in 2019 and included a 70-day usage study with 140 participants using study-provided LG Nexus 5 phones running Android 5.0.1. It did observe that a single app could reach 4 GB in its historical store data, an upper-end observation rather than a typical size. ACM study scope Historical size observation
Current platform documentation provides limits, measurement tools and optimization advice—not a public distribution of app sizes across stores. Google Play offers app-specific size and peer-comparison tools; Apple documents measurement by build and variant. Neither establishes that ordinary apps now occupy gigabytes.
