An App Store rating can be a useful first signal, but it is not a guarantee that an app is good, that its reviews are representative, or that every review is genuine. Apple’s rating mechanics, the age and context of written reviews, and the limits of public fraud data all matter when you decide what to trust.
What an App Store rating does—and does not—tell you
Apple displays a summary rating on an app’s product page and in search results. That score is specific to the App Store territory you are viewing, so ratings can differ between countries or regions. Apple says rating summaries refresh on an ongoing basis.
Developers can reset an app’s summary rating when releasing a new version. A reset does not erase written reviews, so the score and the review history may reflect different time spans. Before treating a score as a verdict, look at the distribution and recency of ratings and read comments that describe the version and territory relevant to you. Apple documents these rating and review mechanics in its ratings, reviews, and responses guidance.
Why a high or low score can be an imperfect signal
The summary compresses different experiences
A single score cannot explain why people rated an app highly or poorly. Written reviews may describe different features, devices, expectations, or versions. A cluster of older complaints, for example, may not describe the app you would download today; a recent high score alone may not tell you whether the features you need work well.

Reviews and ratings are not the same evidence
Compare the summary with the rating distribution and written comments. Check when reviews were posted, what app version or experience they discuss, and whether Apple or the developer has responded. Those details provide context, but they do not prove that a particular review is authentic or representative.
Anecdotes do not establish a general failure
People sometimes ask why App Store ratings seem “completely wrong.” That reaction can reflect a real mismatch between a score and an individual’s experience, but it does not demonstrate that ratings are generally wrong. Public evidence cited here does not establish the current prevalence of fake App Store reviews or an independently verified error rate for Apple’s moderation.

What Apple reports about review fraud
Apple says it processed more than 1.2 billion ratings and reviews during 2024 and removed more than 143 million fraudulent ratings and reviews. Those are Apple-reported figures, published in May 2025. They indicate the scale of activity Apple says it reviewed and removed; they do not reveal what share of all reviews were fraudulent, how many fraudulent reviews remained, or how often legitimate reviews were mistakenly removed. Submission-review totals measure a different process from customer ratings and reviews. Apple’s 2025 App Store Transparency Report records 9,100,620 app submissions reviewed and 2,093,244 rejected. Separately, Apple’s May 2025 announcement says it reviewed more than 7.7 million submissions during 2024 and rejected more than 1.9 million. The report and the announcement state different totals and reporting contexts; neither number is a count of user reviews. Consult the 2025 App Store Transparency Report for its figures.
What independent research can—and cannot—show
A 2019 study by Daniel Martens and Walid Maalej examined 60,000 fake reviews alongside 62 million Apple App Store reviews. In a labeled dataset containing 10% fake reviews, the authors reported 91% recall and 98% AUC/ROC for their classifier. These are results for that study’s dataset and method, not an estimate that 10% of App Store reviews were fake and not a measure of Apple’s current detection accuracy. Apple’s enforcement totals are company-reported, and the study is historical. Neither establishes today’s overall fake-review prevalence or an independently audited measure of Apple’s current moderation performance.

- Check the territory and score. Confirm that the product page is for the App Store territory you use, since summary ratings are territory-specific.
- Read beyond the headline number. Look at the rating distribution and several written reviews, especially recent ones that explain what worked or failed.
- Match comments to your needs. Give more weight to reviews about the features, version, or use case that matter to you. A review’s claims still cannot be independently verified from the score alone.
- Look for context in developer replies. A response can clarify how a developer addressed a complaint, but it does not by itself prove that the complaint or response is complete.
- Treat extreme patterns cautiously, not as proof. A sudden-looking mix of praise or complaints may be worth investigating, but the available public figures cannot establish that a particular app’s reviews are fake.
How developers and users can handle reviews
Apple says developers may use SKStoreReviewController to request a rating or review up to three times in a 365-day period. Developers can respond to reviews; Apple says the reviewer is notified and may update the review. These are distinct from attempts to filter, buy, or otherwise manipulate feedback, which Apple’s guidelines prohibit. Details are in Apple’s developer guidance.

If you encounter offensive, spam, or otherwise policy-violating review content, Apple provides a Report a Concern mechanism through App Store Connect. Apple may investigate and remove content. Developers can also direct customers with billing or download problems to Apple Support, as those issues are handled through Apple’s support channels.
So, is App Store review broken?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than “ratings are broken”: summary scores and written reviews are imperfect signals, and Apple acknowledges and acts against review fraud. Its public figures do not independently establish the scale of fraud that remains or the accuracy of its moderation today. Treat ratings as a starting point, then use recent, relevant written reviews and their context to make a better-informed choice.
