Possibly—but only as a research lead, not as proof of a space-qualified material. A 2019 study reported that silk from the wild silkworm Antheraea pernyi had higher yield stress and breaking stress at −196°C than at room temperature. The authors linked that behavior to a nanofibril structure that redirects cracks and to molecular-chain extension that can preserve ductility. Those are promising mechanisms for Arctic or space hardware, but the available report does not establish numerical design values, durability in vacuum, radiation resistance, or readiness for a mission.
What the cryogenic result actually shows
The finding concerns one named material: silk produced by the wild silkworm Antheraea pernyi. It should not be generalized to domesticated silkworm silk, spider silk, commercial silk textiles, or every fiber sold as “silk.” In the 2019 report, the material was tested at room temperature and at −196°C. Both yield stress and breaking stress were described as higher at the cryogenic condition.
Yield stress is the point at which a specimen begins to deform permanently. Breaking stress is the stress recorded when it finally fractures. A higher value for either means the specimen tolerated more applied stress under that test condition; it does not, by itself, establish that the material absorbed more energy, lasted longer, or performed better in a spacecraft.
The report is from work by C. Fu and colleagues published in Materials Chemistry Frontiers in 2019. The journal record is identified by DOI 10.1039/c9qm00282k. The accessible summary gives the temperature comparison but not the numerical stresses, specimen count, dimensions, strain rate, humidity, uncertainty, or complete temperature series.

| Condition | Reported mechanical response | What can be concluded |
|---|---|---|
| Room temperature | Baseline condition; numerical yield and breaking stresses not stated in the accessible report | Provides the comparison point for the cryogenic test |
| −196°C | Yield stress and breaking stress reported as higher than at room temperature | Shows an unusual low-temperature response for this A. pernyi silk under the study’s laboratory conditions |
Thus, −196°C is a test condition, not a performance rating. Without the original paper and supplementary information, it is not possible to quote a design allowable, rank the fiber against aerospace composites, or calculate a safety factor.
How the fiber can become tougher in the cold
The report describes two related but distinct mechanisms. One is structural and concerns how cracks travel through the fiber. The other is molecular and concerns how much the chains can extend before failure.
Nanofibrils redirect a growing crack
Silk is built from aligned nanoscale fibrils rather than a perfectly uniform solid. The report describes weak intermolecular forces between neighboring aligned fibrils. When a crack reaches one of these interfaces, the fibrils can separate or split instead of allowing the crack to continue as one straight, catastrophic path.
That separation forces the crack into interfibrillar regions and can create several roughly parallel cracks. Making a crack branch, deflect, and open new interfaces consumes energy. The result is an extrinsic toughening effect: the architecture changes the crack path, even though the individual molecular bonds are not necessarily stronger.

This mechanism matters for thin fibers and fiber-based structures because a local flaw does not have to become a single through-thickness break immediately. It does not mean that every crack will be harmless. The amount of energy absorbed depends on fibril alignment, interface strength, defects, loading direction, moisture history, and the size and shape of the component.
Disordered chains can support low-temperature ductility
The same report proposes an intrinsic explanation for ductility at very low temperature. Silk containing more disordered molecular chains is described as allowing those chains to extend under load. That extension can permit additional strain before fracture, even while the measured strength rises.
Ductility is not the same as strength or toughness. A material may withstand a high peak stress but break after little deformation; another may stretch substantially while carrying less stress. Toughness combines load and deformation over the entire failure process. The distinctions are important when interpreting the cryogenic result.

|---|---|---|
| Yield stress | Stress at the onset of permanent deformation | Reported higher at −196°C than at room temperature |
| Breaking stress | Stress at fracture | Reported higher at −196°C than at room temperature |
| Ductility | Capacity to deform before breaking | Linked to extension of more disordered molecular chains |
| Toughness | Energy absorbed before fracture | Supported by crack deflection and parallel-crack formation as a proposed structural mechanism; no numerical toughness value is provided |
Why this could matter for Arctic and space devices
Many materials become less forgiving as temperature falls, so a fiber whose measured strength increases at a cryogenic point is scientifically interesting. A fiber or composite reinforcement that retains load capacity could be useful in mechanisms exposed to severe cold, cryogenic instruments, or structures that must remain flexible during temperature changes.

The 2019 report presents Arctic and outer-space devices as possible future applications. That wording is prospective. The result does not show that an A. pernyi component has operated in orbit, survived launch vibration, or maintained its properties through repeated thermal cycles.
For space use, engineers would also need evidence under the actual service environment. Relevant questions include:
- Does the fiber retain its strength and crack resistance in vacuum rather than laboratory air?
- How do repeated transitions between hot and cold affect fibril interfaces and residual stress?
- Does ultraviolet or ionizing radiation alter the protein chains?
- Can the material tolerate handling, launch vibration, micrometeoroid damage, and joining to other materials?
- Does absorbed water or other volatile content produce unacceptable outgassing or change the cryogenic response?
- Can a consistent fiber, yarn, coating, or composite be manufactured at the dimensions and defect rates required for hardware?
None of those questions is answered by the reported room-temperature-versus-−196°C comparison.

The strongest evidence is the direction of the comparison: in the reported laboratory test, A. pernyi silk showed higher yield and breaking stress at −196°C. The mechanism discussion explains why a hierarchical protein fiber might resist catastrophic cracking and still permit molecular extension.

Several engineering details are not available in the retrieved material:
- Absolute stress values and the amount of increase at −196°C
- Number of specimens, scatter, and statistical uncertainty
- Fiber diameter, gauge length, preparation, and conditioning
- Strain rate, loading direction, gripping method, and failure criteria
- Humidity and other environmental controls
- Whether intermediate temperatures were tested
- How many thermal cycles the specimens experienced
Those omissions prevent direct conversion of the result into a material specification. A claim such as “the fiber is stronger than a particular aerospace composite” would require matched tests and is not supported here.

Silk is a protein material whose final properties depend on how chains align and how fibrils assemble. A 2024 Nature Communications study on silkworm silk formation reported that metal-ion distributions change as fibers form, alongside changes in protein-chain alignment and in the behavior of the feedstock. That work provides useful structural context: processing chemistry can influence the architecture that later controls fracture.

It does not test the −196°C claim and should not be read as an independent confirmation of the cryogenic mechanical result. For any engineering program, the source population, rearing conditions, spinning process, post-treatment, moisture state, and orientation would need tight control. Otherwise, two batches both labeled A. pernyi silk could have materially different low-temperature behavior.

What a space-qualification program would need to do next
A practical development path would separate confirmation of the science from qualification of a component.
- Reproduce the original comparison. Test authenticated A. pernyi fibers at room temperature and −196°C using documented specimen geometry, conditioning, strain rate, and loading direction. Report individual results, averages, scatter, and failure modes.
- Map the temperature response. Add controlled points between room temperature and −196°C, then test warming and cooling cycles. This reveals whether the change is gradual, reversible, or associated with thermal damage.
- Measure the properties separately. Record yield stress, breaking stress, strain to failure, work of fracture, and crack-growth behavior rather than treating “strength” as one number.
- Control the environment. Repeat tests at relevant humidity levels and in vacuum. Compare untreated fiber with any coating, resin, or textile construction intended for hardware.
- Characterize aging and hazards. Expose samples to radiation, ultraviolet light, vibration, contamination, and repeated thermal cycling appropriate to the proposed mission. Track changes in both molecular structure and mechanical performance.
- Test the finished architecture. A spacecraft would use a yarn, laminate, tether, membrane, or other assembly—not an isolated laboratory filament. Joints, coatings, resin compatibility, abrasion, and defect tolerance must be evaluated at component scale.
Only after those stages could a program establish allowable stresses and demonstrate that the fiber offers a useful advantage over established materials for a defined mission.
How to interpret the 2025 review
A 2025 review by Biswajit Panda, Rajeev Ahuja, and Kamal P. Singh surveys silk from spiders and silkworm cocoons, including research on cryogenic temperatures and high vacuum. It is valuable for placing the 2019 observation within broader silk-materials research, but it is not a flight qualification test of A. pernyi silk.
Recommended Free Tools
The review’s broad coverage also reinforces why species and structure must stay explicit. Results from spider silk, domesticated silkworm cocoons, regenerated silk proteins, and engineered composites cannot automatically be substituted for the wild-silkworm fiber in the 2019 experiment.
Bottom line for technology readers
Antheraea pernyi silk is worth investigating for cryogenic applications because the reported laboratory comparison found higher yield and breaking stress at −196°C than at room temperature, while proposed crack-deflection and molecular-extension mechanisms offer plausible explanations. The evidence supports a promising material hypothesis, not a claim that silk is ready for spacecraft. Numerical data, environmental controls, repeatability, vacuum behavior, radiation tolerance, and component-level testing are still required before any space mission could rely on it.
