Angry Birds Stella appears to have been discontinued before it was removed from app stores, but Rovio has not publicly confirmed a Stella-specific reason for either decision. Rovio has explained why it stopped maintaining some older games: it shifted attention to active titles, while older software became difficult to keep compatible with changing devices and store requirements. Those statements describe its general policy, not a confirmed explanation for Stella.
What happened to Angry Birds Stella?
Angry Birds Stella is no longer listed as a game that new users can normally find and download from app stores. A fan-maintained history reports that the game was discontinued and later removed from stores on October 18, 2016. That date and chronology come from a secondary source, not a located official Rovio notice, so treat them as reported history rather than a company-confirmed timeline. Source: Angry Birds Wiki.
Discontinuation and delisting are different things: discontinuation means the game was no longer being actively supported or developed; delisting means its store listing was removed, preventing ordinary new downloads. The available history indicates those events did not happen at the same time.

Why was it removed?
The precise reason for Stella’s removal has not been established by the available official sources. Rovio’s explanations about older games provide context, but they do not identify Stella or say that a specific factor caused its removal.

Rovio’s support guidance says that some older games were left unchanged as the company focused on newer active titles. It says Rovio chose not to keep updating certain older games to meet changing device and marketplace requirements. In a June 22, 2021 letter about older games broadly, Rovio said some had been built with older technology and game engines that could not be maintained to its standards; it also noted that returning some titles would require substantial rebuilding as mobile platforms and requirements changed. What the sources do not establish
- They do not confirm that poor sales caused Stella to be removed.
- They do not identify an expired license as the cause.
- They do not establish that Stella was removed as part of a later delisting wave.
- They do not provide an official Stella-specific removal date or statement of intent.
Those explanations may circulate online, but the cited sources do not substantiate them. The careful answer is that Rovio’s general legacy-game policy offers a plausible context, while the specific reason for Stella’s removal remains unconfirmed.
Can you reinstall Stella if you downloaded it before?
Possibly, but it is not guaranteed. Rovio says people who previously downloaded some affected older games may still be able to install them through their app-store cloud history. This is general support guidance, not a promise that Stella will appear in every account or remain compatible with a current device.

- Open the app store account you used when you originally downloaded the game.
- Look in the account’s previously downloaded or purchased app history for Angry Birds Stella.
- If the game appears, try the store’s install option. If it does not appear or installation is blocked, the store may not offer it for that account, region, or device.
Store availability and compatibility can vary. A prior download does not ensure that the app can be restored or will run properly on current hardware or software.
