A little extra battery drain after an update can be normal on Pixel phones: Google says the phone works to download and optimize the new software and get everything running. That explanation is specific to Pixel guidance, not a guarantee about every Android phone. If the drain seems excessive or continues, check app usage and follow the troubleshooting steps for your device.
Why a software update may use more battery
Installing an update does not necessarily mean the phone has finished all of its work. Google explains that after a software update, a Pixel may use more battery than usual while it downloads and optimizes the new software and gets everything running. How long should you wait?
Google advises Pixel owners to seek further help if unusual battery drain continues after a few days. That is an escalation cue, not a promise that every phone will recover within a set period. The official guidance does not establish a universal recovery timeline for Android devices or a normal amount of extra drain.
In particular, Google does not specify a percentage increase or a number of hours that should count as normal. It also does not say that every Pixel will return to its former battery behavior by the end of a few days. Use that wording as a reason not to wait indefinitely if the drain remains unusual, not as a countdown that proves the phone is healthy until a particular day.
Do not confuse that post-update advice with Google’s separate note about setting up a Pixel or completing a factory reset. In those situations, battery optimization may take a few weeks to take full effect as the phone learns from recent app use. 1. Look for an app using an unusual amount of battery
Start with your phone’s battery-usage screen and review which apps have used the most power. If one app stands out, check its background battery use as well as its overall use. That can help distinguish a general, temporary increase after the update from drain associated with a particular app. The available labels and location of these controls depend on the device, Android version, and manufacturer; use your phone’s Settings search or its manufacturer’s instructions if you cannot find them. Look at the pattern, not just the total. If one app is taking an unusually large share, its background use is a useful clue to investigate. Do not assume that an app appearing high in the list is necessarily faulty: the guidance recommends reviewing usage and background activity, but does not set a threshold that proves an app is responsible. If a particular app continues to dominate battery use, check whether an app update is available and consult the app or phone maker’s instructions as appropriate.
2. Keep Pixel battery optimization enabled
On a Pixel, keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on. Google says Pixel battery behavior learns from recent app usage and recommends these features. They are settings to leave enabled, not a guaranteed way to eliminate every post-update increase. Adaptive Battery’s learning is also not the same thing as the update’s short-term download and optimization work. Google’s note that optimization can take a few weeks applies after setting up a device or completing a factory reset. It describes the time those battery features may take to learn recent app usage in those situations; it does not promise that waiting weeks is the right response to persistent post-update drain.
3. Update apps and restart the phone
Google’s general Android troubleshooting guidance includes checking for app updates, checking for an Android system update, and restarting the phone. Follow the update and restart instructions for your device; menu names and paths vary by manufacturer and Android version. These are general troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed fix or a special post-update procedure with a prescribed order. A practical sequence is to inspect the battery-use list first, install relevant app updates, check whether an Android system update is available, and restart using your manufacturer’s directions. Then look at battery usage again. This keeps the check focused on what is actually using power and avoids treating a restart alone as proof the issue is gone.

Checking for an Android system update is still relevant even when the drain began after an update: Google includes it among general troubleshooting steps. The guidance does not say that a second update is always available, or that installing one will necessarily resolve battery drain. Similarly, app updates are worth checking, especially when an individual app stands out, but no single app-specific remedy is established for all phones.
4. Use device-specific diagnostics or contact support
For Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold devices, Google documents Battery Diagnostics as an available troubleshooting option. If the problem remains, use the support route appropriate to your phone: Pixel support for a Pixel, or the phone manufacturer for another Android device. Before contacting support, it is useful to be able to describe when the drain began, whether it is still happening, and whether one app is unusually high in the battery-usage list. These observations follow from Google’s recommended checks and can help direct the conversation, but they do not substitute for model-specific diagnosis. If you do not own a Pixel 6 or later, do not assume the Pixel Battery Diagnostics feature is available on your phone; use the diagnostics and support options supplied by your manufacturer.
When a factory reset is worth considering
A factory reset is not a sensible first response to a short-lived increase in battery use after an update. Google includes resetting among steps for problems that do not go away, and warns that a reset removes the phone’s data and apps.
