Android has several independent notification controls. Turning off sound, hiding alerts from the lock screen, silencing a category, or enabling Do Not Disturb does not necessarily revoke an app’s permission to post notifications. That is why you may still see an entry in the notification shade, hear a permitted alert during a mode, or find a notification that cannot be dismissed yet. The fastest fix is to long-press the exact notification, identify its app and category, and change that specific control.
Android’s notification controls are separate
The phrase “turn notifications off” can describe different settings. Android treats delivery permission, interruption, visual placement, exceptions and notification lifetime as separate decisions. A change in one layer does not automatically change the others.

Google’s Android Help documentation cautions that “Settings can vary by phone. For more info, contact your device manufacturer.” Menu names and locations therefore depend on the manufacturer, Android release and sometimes the app.

- Open the notification shade. Swipe down from the top of the screen until you can see the alert that keeps returning.
- Touch and hold the notification. The expanded card normally identifies the app and, when supported, the notification category or channel.
- Open its notification settings. Tap the gear, “Settings,” or the equivalent option shown on your phone. This route targets the alert you are actually seeing rather than a similarly named setting elsewhere.
- Record what the alert is doing. Note whether it is visible only in the shade, shown on the lock screen, making a sound, arriving while a mode is active, or refusing to dismiss. Each symptom points to a different control.
- Change the narrowest setting that solves the problem. Disable the displayed category if only one kind of alert is unwanted. Disable the app’s notifications only when every notification from that app should stop.
If long-pressing does not expose a category, open the app’s page under the system notification settings and inspect all listed categories. Older Android releases may use different labels or may not show a “Recently sent” list.

Stop notifications from one app or one category
Block the entire app
Use the app-level switch when no notification from that app is useful. A typical current path is Settings > Notifications > App notifications, followed by the app name. Turn off the master notification switch. Some phones place the same page under Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications.
This setting affects ordinary notifications posted by the app, but it is not a promise that every visual status from the operating system disappears. System security notices and other protected alerts are handled separately.
Block only one type
Keep the app’s master switch enabled, then turn off the category attached to the unwanted alert. Categories may be labeled for direct messages, group conversations, promotions, downloads, reminders, playback or background activity. The names are chosen by the app, so two apps can organize them differently.

After changing a category, wait for that same event to occur again. If it still appears, long-press the new alert and verify that it belongs to the category you changed; the app may have posted a visually similar event through another category.
Check controls inside the app
Some preferences are not exposed by Android’s system page. Sound choices, marketing alerts, account activity and topic subscriptions may be controlled inside the app itself. Open the app’s own settings or notification preferences and disable the relevant option there. Android’s system switch and the app’s internal switch can both be required for a complete change.
Why a “disabled” notification still appears in the shade
It is silent rather than blocked
Choosing Silent removes sound and vibration but does not remove the entry. Google describes silent notifications as remaining visible when you open the notification shade. If the goal is to eliminate the entry, use the app or category permission instead of the alerting-style control.

Only the lock-screen view was hidden
Lock-screen settings govern presentation while the phone is locked. Hiding sensitive content, or hiding notifications altogether on that surface, leaves delivery to the notification shade unchanged. To stop a particular app, return to its app-level or category-level notification setting.
The notification is an ongoing activity
Some entries represent work that has not finished and are not ordinary dismissible messages. Google gives a music-player notification as an example: it can remain while playback or the related activity is active. Stop or complete the underlying activity, such as ending playback, before expecting the entry to clear. If the activity is stuck, force-stopping or restarting the responsible app may be necessary, but use those actions only when normal controls do not end it.
Why alerts still arrive with Do Not Disturb enabled
Do Not Disturb is an interruption filter, not a universal notification deletion switch. A mode can allow particular apps, people, conversations or event types, and it can run only during a schedule. Review the currently active mode rather than assuming the global switch tells the whole story.

- Open Settings > Modes or Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb, depending on the phone.
- Open the active mode and inspect its notification filters. Check allowed apps, people and conversations.
- Review automatic rules and schedules. A mode that has ended, has not started yet, or is being replaced by another mode can produce results that look inconsistent.
- Check whether the alert is marked as an exception. Remove the app or person from the allowed list if that alert should be suppressed.
Google states that critical notifications still show in modes; system security notifications cannot be blocked through ordinary Do Not Disturb controls. This explains why a protected system warning can appear even when every visible exception seems disabled.
Important conversations on supported Pixel phones
On supported Pixel conversation controls, an Important conversation can be permitted to notify during Do Not Disturb. Open the conversation’s notification settings from the alert or the messaging app and inspect its priority. If the conversation is marked Important, lower its priority or remove it from the mode’s allowed conversations. Availability depends on the phone, Android version and messaging app, so another device may not offer the same control.

Use notification history to identify alerts you missed
When the notification vanishes before you can inspect it, look for Settings > Notifications > Notification history or a similarly named page. On devices that support history, it can show recently dismissed and snoozed notifications and help reveal which app generated the alert. History is diagnostic: it does not prevent a future notification.

If no history option exists, the phone or Android release may not provide it, or the feature may need to be enabled before useful entries are collected. Manufacturer documentation is the reliable guide for that model.
Match the fix to what “still appears” means

When the menu does not match these steps
Android Help explicitly notes that settings vary by phone. A manufacturer can rename “App notifications,” place notification controls under the Apps section, or replace Do Not Disturb with a broader Modes panel. Some Android Help instructions apply only to Android 14 and newer, while older releases omit features such as the Recently sent list or use different navigation.
Confirm the phone model and Android version in Settings > About phone, then use the manufacturer’s model-specific support instructions for the exact path. Do not infer that a missing menu means notifications cannot be controlled; it may simply be located elsewhere or grouped under a different label.

A reliable troubleshooting checklist
- Inspect the actual alert and identify its app.
- Open the alert’s category settings from a long press.
- Decide whether you need to stop delivery, sound, lock-screen display or only interruption during a mode.
- Check every category under the app, not just the master switch.
- Review the app’s own notification and subscription settings.
- Inspect the active mode’s allowed apps, people, conversations and schedules.
- Look for an Important conversation exception on supported Pixel devices.
- Determine whether the entry is ongoing and tied to an activity that is still running.
- Use notification history when the source is unclear.
- Apply the labels and instructions for your specific Android version and manufacturer.
What to expect after the change
A category or app switch affects new notifications; it does not necessarily erase an entry that is already posted. Dismiss the existing alert after changing the setting, and end any ongoing activity that keeps recreating it. A mode change affects interruption rules while that mode is active, whereas an app-level block is the setting to use when future delivery should stop regardless of mode.
The cause on any individual phone cannot be determined without the notification itself, the app, the device manufacturer, Android version and current mode settings. Treat the alert as the evidence: its source, category, surface and lifecycle tell you which control to change.
