On a Pixel phone, open Settings > Display & touch > Night Light > Schedule and make sure the schedule is not set to None. If you chose Turns on from sunset to sunrise, turn on Location Services; Google says that schedule cannot work without it. If you prefer not to share location, choose Turns on at custom time and enter start and end times instead. The setting is listed under Comfort filters on Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, while Pixel 9 and earlier and Pixel 10a place it directly under Display & touch.
These instructions apply to supported Pixel software. Other Android manufacturers may use different names or menu paths.
Start with the Night Light schedule, not Dark theme
Night Light has its own schedule inside the Night Light control. Changing Dark theme, Bedtime mode or another display filter does not configure Night Light. Open Google’s Pixel Night Light instructions if you want the current Pixel terminology while following the steps below.

Its automatic behavior is controlled by the Schedule field on the Night Light page. Conversely, a phone can have a schedule selected but appear unchanged because you are looking at a Dark theme or Bedtime setting instead.

Find Night Light on your Pixel
Google has moved the control on some recent models. Use the path that matches your phone:
| Pixel models | Location of Night Light |
|---|---|
| Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel 10 Pro Fold | Settings > Display & touch > Comfort filters > Night Light |
| Pixel 10a, Pixel 9 and earlier Pixel models | Settings > Display & touch > Night Light |
On a different Android phone, use the Settings search field for Night Light. The exact label, location and available schedules are manufacturer-specific; do not assume the Pixel path is present. Some manufacturers use a term such as blue-light filter, so search for that wording if Night Light produces no result.
Step-by-step fix for a schedule that does not activate
- Open Night Light itself. Start in Settings, then go to Display & touch. On the newer Pixel models listed above, open Comfort filters first. Confirm that the page says Night Light rather than Dark theme or Bedtime mode.
- Inspect the Schedule field. If it says None, automatic activation is disabled. Select either the custom-time option or sunset-to-sunrise.
- Check both custom times. With Turns on at custom time selected, verify the displayed Start time and End time. A schedule cannot follow the times you intended if either field was changed accidentally.
- Enable Location Services for sunset scheduling. With Turns on from sunset to sunrise selected, turn on Location Services in Android’s system settings. Google explicitly states that this mode will not work when Location Services is off because the phone needs a location to determine local sunrise and sunset.
- Wait for the next scheduled boundary. A change made after the start time may not look like a test until the next transition. Check the schedule’s displayed times and then observe whether Night Light changes at the next start or end rather than judging it immediately after saving.
- Check whether you switched Night Light manually. A Google Pixel Community product expert, Alex_V., wrote in a 2023 discussion that manually turning Night Light on can override the schedule and leave it on until the next sunrise. This is community guidance, not a guarantee for every Android version, but it is a useful explanation when the screen stays tinted past a custom end time. Return to the Night Light page and verify the active state and schedule together.
Choose the schedule that matches your priorities
Pixel provides two automatic modes. The important difference is whether the phone calculates daylight locally or follows times that you specify.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Schedule | How it behaves | Location Services | Best choice when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turns on at custom time | Uses the Start time and End time entered on the Night Light page. | Not required for the schedule itself. | You want predictable clock times or do not want to use location-based sunrise data. |
| Turns on from sunset to sunrise | Tracks local sunset and sunrise, so the transition changes with daylight conditions. | Required; Google says the mode does not work when Location Services is off. | You want the screen filter to follow seasonal daylight changes. |
If privacy or battery policy means Location Services must remain off, custom times are the supported alternative documented by Google. They will not adjust automatically when sunset moves earlier or later. If you travel, custom times continue to use the clock times you entered, whereas sunset-to-sunrise is intended to follow the daylight timing associated with the phone’s location.
Why the screen may not change at the expected time
The schedule is set to None
Night Light can still be turned on from its page or a Quick Settings tile while its automatic schedule is disabled. A visible tint therefore does not prove that a schedule exists. The Schedule field must show one of the two automatic choices. If it shows None, select a mode and save the Start and End values before testing.
Location Services is off for sunset-to-sunrise
This is the specific dependency Google calls out. The phone cannot calculate the local daylight boundary for that mode without location information. Turning on only a location permission for an individual app is not the same as enabling the system-wide Location Services switch. Check the main Android Location Services control, not merely a permission listed for a particular application.

The custom start or end time is not the time you expected
Custom mode has separate Start time and End time fields. Check the clock format and both values on the Night Light page. If the end time is earlier on the clock than the start time, Android may treat the interval as crossing midnight; use the displayed fields as the authoritative configuration rather than relying on memory. Make sure you are editing Night Light’s times, not the schedule for Dark theme or Bedtime mode.

A manual change has altered the current state
The Pixel Community answer from Alex_V. describes a possible override: a manual activation can keep Night Light on until the next sunrise. Because this is not an official behavior specification and the discussion concerns a particular software context, treat it as a diagnostic possibility. Re-open Night Light, confirm the chosen schedule and use the scheduled transition to test it. Do not present the community explanation as a universal rule for every Android phone.
You are changing a neighboring control
Dark theme changes the appearance of supported apps and the Android interface. Bedtime mode has its own schedule and interruption controls. Neither one is the Night Light schedule. Android Help documents that Android 13 and later can schedule Dark theme at bedtime; that setting can make the interface look different while leaving Night Light unchanged. If the interface becomes dark but the screen color does not become warmer, inspect Night Light separately.
Your model uses a different menu hierarchy
On Pixel 10-series phones, Night Light is grouped under Comfort filters. On Pixel 10a and Pixel 9 or earlier, it appears directly under Display & touch. If you follow an older screenshot and cannot find the control, use Settings search and verify the phone model before changing another display option.
Sunset scheduling and location privacy
You do not need Location Services merely to use Night Light manually or to run a custom clock schedule. A 2020 Pixel Community reply by Lilybell2 explained that location is needed when the screen should respond to sunrise and sunset because those times vary by where the phone is located. Google’s official help page independently documents the same requirement for the sunset-to-sunrise option.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This creates a straightforward choice:
- Keep Location Services off and use custom Start and End times.
- Enable Location Services and use sunset-to-sunrise for a daylight-aware schedule.
- Use Night Light manually when you need a one-time change rather than an automatic transition.
Changing this setting does not require purchasing a screen protector, replacing the display or installing a separate utility. The documented fix is in Android’s display and location settings.

Test the schedule without confusing the result
Use a controlled check rather than changing several settings at once. First write down whether the selected mode is custom time or sunset-to-sunrise. For custom time, record the exact Start time and End time shown on the page. For sunset-to-sunrise, confirm the system-wide Location Services switch is enabled. Then leave the Night Light page and let the next boundary occur. This avoids mistaking an immediate manual change for an automatic transition.
If the current clock is already past the configured start time, editing the schedule at that moment is not a reliable instant test. The useful observation is the next scheduled start or end. If you need to stop testing, return to the Night Light page and read the current schedule and active state together. A Quick Settings tile can change the visible state without changing the schedule selection, so always verify both places.
For a schedule that should turn off, pay special attention to whether Night Light was manually enabled. The October 25, 2023 Pixel Community answer from Alex_V. says a manual activation may keep it on until the next sunrise. That explanation is limited community guidance, but it accounts for the common symptom “Night Light turned on and never turned off at my custom end time.” Rechecking the schedule and observing the next automatic boundary is safer than assuming a hardware fault.
A practical diagnostic checklist
Use this order so each check rules out one cause without changing unrelated settings:
- Identify the phone model and Android version.
- Open the Night Light page through the model-appropriate menu.
- Confirm that Schedule is not None.
- Read the selected mode aloud: custom time or sunset-to-sunrise.
- For custom time, record the exact Start time and End time shown on screen.
- For sunset-to-sunrise, verify that the system Location Services switch is on.
- Confirm that you are not testing Dark theme or Bedtime mode instead.
- If Night Light was recently toggled manually, treat an unexpected on-state as a possible override and re-check the schedule.
- Observe the next scheduled boundary rather than expecting an immediate transition after editing.
- If the menu is missing, use Settings search and check the manufacturer’s current instructions instead of applying Pixel labels to another brand.
Common symptom-to-check matches
| Symptom | First check | Likely corrective action supported by the documented settings |
|---|---|---|
| Night Light never starts automatically | Schedule field | Change None to custom time or sunset-to-sunrise, then verify the times. |
| Sunset mode does nothing | System Location Services | Turn Location Services on, or switch to custom times if you do not want location-based scheduling. |
| Screen is dark but not warm | Which control is scheduled | Open Night Light; Dark theme and Bedtime mode have separate schedules. |
| Night Light remains on after the end time | Recent manual toggle | Recheck the active state and schedule; treat the community-described manual override as a possibility. |
| Night Light cannot be found | Phone model and menu path | Look under Comfort filters on listed Pixel 10 models, or search Settings on another model. |
When the Pixel instructions do not match your phone
The primary instructions cited here are for Pixel phones. Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus and other manufacturers can rename Night Light, place it under a different display menu or implement different scheduling behavior. Search the phone’s Settings app for Night Light, blue-light filter or a similar display-filter term, then consult that manufacturer’s current support documentation. Do not assume that Google’s sunset-to-sunrise requirement or menu labels are identical on another brand unless its documentation says so.
Even on a Pixel, model generation matters. Google lists Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold under Display & touch > Comfort filters, while Pixel 10a, Pixel 9 and earlier models list Night Light directly under Display & touch. If a support article shows a different hierarchy, first compare its model and software context with your phone. A missing label does not by itself show that the feature was removed.

What the available guidance establishes
Google’s Pixel help pages document the two schedule choices, the required Location Services dependency for sunset-to-sunrise, and the model-dependent menu placement. The Google Pixel Community discussions add practical but non-official context: Alex_V.’s October 25, 2023 answer describes a possible manual-toggle override, while Lilybell2’s April 9, 2020 reply explains why sunrise and sunset calculations depend on location. Neither discussion supplies a failure-rate statistic, and there is no published percentage showing how often scheduled Night Light fails.
That evidence also sets clear limits. It supports checking settings, schedule mode, times, location and neighboring controls. It does not support claiming that a particular screen protector, replacement panel, repair tool or third-party utility will restore automatic scheduling. If the documented settings are correct but a non-Pixel phone behaves differently, the phone maker’s instructions are the appropriate next reference.
For the official procedures, see Change your screen color at night on a Pixel phone and Manage screen & display settings on a Pixel phone. For the distinction between display scheduling and interruption modes, see Android Help’s Limit interruptions with Modes & Do Not Disturb on Android. The community discussions are What does switching on night light do? and April 2020 update has broken the scheduled dark mode light mode feature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Night Light require Location Services?
Only the sunset-to-sunrise schedule requires it according to Google. Manual Night Light and the custom Start and End time schedule do not require Location Services.
Why does Night Light not turn off at my scheduled time?
Check the Night Light page’s End time and confirm that you did not manually turn Night Light on. A 2023 Pixel Community answer says a manual activation may keep it on until the next sunrise; that is community guidance, not a universal Android rule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if Schedule says None?
None disables automatic activation. Select Turns on at custom time and enter both times, or select Turns on from sunset to sunrise and enable Location Services.

Where is Night Light on a Pixel 10?
On Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Google lists it under Settings > Display & touch > Comfort filters > Night Light. Pixel 10a, Pixel 9 and earlier models list it directly under Display & touch.
Can I use Night Light without sharing location?
Yes. Use Night Light manually or choose Turns on at custom time. Location Services is needed for the daylight-aware sunset-to-sunrise option.
Is Night Light the same as Dark theme or Bedtime mode?
No. Night Light controls screen color. Dark theme changes the interface and supported apps, while Bedtime mode has separate schedules and interruption controls.
Why does sunset-to-sunrise fail while a custom schedule works?
Google says sunset-to-sunrise will not work with Location Services off because the phone needs location information to determine local sunrise and sunset. Custom times avoid that dependency.
Can I follow Pixel instructions on a Samsung or Motorola phone?
Use them as Pixel-specific guidance only. Other manufacturers may rename the feature, place it elsewhere or implement different scheduling behavior; search Settings and consult the maker’s current support documentation.
Will changing a screen protector or buying an accessory fix scheduled Night Light?
No documented fix requires hardware. The supported corrective steps are in Night Light’s schedule, Location Services and related display settings.
The Bottom Line
On a Pixel, open the Night Light page, make sure Schedule is not None, verify both custom times or enable Location Services for sunset-to-sunrise, and keep Dark theme and Bedtime mode separate. If Night Light was toggled manually, recheck its state and schedule before judging the next automatic boundary. Menu locations differ by Pixel generation and by manufacturer.
