Android does not have one universal “stop opening Google” switch. A search result opening inside the Google app, a link launching Chrome, a search typed into Chrome, and a website opening its own installed app are controlled by different settings.
Identify where the page appeared first, then change only the setting responsible. The replacement app must be installed, enabled, and able to handle the link or task; changing the browser default cannot override every in-app viewer or domain-specific link association.
Start with the behavior you actually see
The fastest fix is to match the symptom to its control. Android can route the same URL differently depending on which app created the request, whether the link targets a verified domain, and which defaults you selected.
| What you did | Where the page opened | Setting that controls it | What to change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tapped a result in the Google app | An in-app web page with Google app controls | Google app web-page preference | Turn off Open web pages in the app, or use the page menu to open a browser |
| Tapped a link in another app | Chrome, even though another browser is installed | Android default browser | Select the replacement under the system Browser app setting |
| Typed a query into Chrome | Google results in Chrome | Chrome search engine | Choose another available search engine in Chrome settings |
| Tapped a link for a service that has its own app | The installed service app | App Links and supported-link choices for that app | Change that app’s Open by default or Open supported links controls |
These controls are independent. Changing Chrome’s search engine does not change Android’s default browser, and changing the default browser does not turn off the Google app’s internal page viewer.

Check where the page opened before changing anything
Look at the top and bottom of the screen immediately after tapping the link.
- If you still see the Google app’s search interface, profile picture, or Google app menu, the page is being displayed inside the Google app.
- If you see Chrome’s address bar and Chrome menu, Android launched Chrome as the browser handler.
- If you see another installed app’s own navigation, the URL probably matches that app’s supported or verified domain.
- If Android displayed a chooser asking which app to use, no single handler was selected for that request, or more than one eligible app is available.
Record the exact action that started the page—Google search result, message link, email link, notification, or a URL typed into a browser. That detail prevents you from changing an unrelated default.
Stop Google search results opening inside the Google app
When a result from the Google app opens without leaving that app, change its separate web-page preference. Google documents this path in Manage your preferences for web pages in the Google app.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Open General.
- Turn off Open web pages in the app.
Run another search and tap a result. The Google app should hand the URL to Android’s browser handler instead of rendering the page in its own viewer. The exact wording or location can differ with the Google app version.
Use the one-time browser command
If a page is already open in the Google app, open its More menu. Depending on the version, you may see Open in browser or Open in Chrome. This moves only that page and does not necessarily change the standing preference.

If the option is missing
Confirm that you are in the Google app rather than Chrome. The setting does not control pages that Chrome is already displaying. If the Google app has been disabled, re-enable it before looking for the preference; if the menu layout differs, search the app’s Settings screen for the phrase web pages in the app.
Make another browser the Android default
Use this fix when links from messaging, mail, social, or other apps consistently launch Chrome. Android Help describes the system path in Learn how to change your default browser.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default apps. Some phones label this Choose default apps.
- Tap Browser app.
- Select the installed browser you want Android to use.
Afterward, tap a normal web link from another app. Android should send it to the selected browser. Phone manufacturers can rearrange Settings and use different labels, so use the Settings search box for default apps or browser app if the path is not identical.
What this setting does not change
- It does not turn off the Google app’s Open web pages in the app preference.
- It does not change the search provider used by a search field inside Chrome.
- It does not necessarily override a link that an installed app claims for its own verified domain.
- It cannot select an app that is not installed, enabled, or capable of handling the requested action.
Change searches made inside Chrome
If the page is visibly in Chrome but every query typed into Chrome’s address or search field goes to Google, adjust Chrome rather than Android’s browser default. Google’s Android guidance separates these controls in Change your default search engine & add or disable apps.
- Open Chrome.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Search engine.
- Select an available search engine.
This affects searches entered in Chrome’s search field. A link tapped in another app still uses Android’s Browser app default, and a result tapped in the Google app still follows the Google app’s own web-page setting.

When one website always opens its installed app
A site-specific app launch is usually an Android App Link or another supported-link association, not a failure of the global browser choice. App Links connect verified website domains with particular apps. Android’s documentation explains the model in About App Links.

Change the app’s supported-link setting
On many phones, open Settings → Apps → [the app] → Open by default. Look for Open supported links, a switch to allow or prevent supported links, and a list of associated domains. The exact screen varies by Android release and manufacturer.
- Open the installed app’s entry in system Settings.
- Choose Open by default or the similarly named link-handling screen.
- Turn off Open supported links if you want those URLs to stay in the browser.
- If the phone offers domain checkboxes, deselect only the domains you want handled elsewhere.
- Test a link from the original app that produced the unwanted launch.
Domain controls let you be selective. You can leave an app handling its own links while sending unrelated websites to the browser.
Why Android 12 and newer behave differently
Android Developers’ Create deep links and Verify App Links documentation describes an important version distinction: on Android 12 and later, a generic web link normally resolves to an app only when that app is approved for the specific domain. If the domain is not verified for an app, Android sends the link to the user’s default browser. Older releases can present different chooser or association behavior.
Verification is domain-specific. An app approved for one website does not automatically own every website, and selecting a different default browser does not erase the verified association.

Make sure the replacement app can handle the request
Android can offer only apps that are installed, enabled, and registered for the action. A browser may be installed but not appear in the Browser app selector if it is disabled or does not declare browser capabilities. Likewise, an app intended to open a particular service’s links must support that service’s URL patterns.
- Install the replacement app from a legitimate app source and finish its initial setup.
- Check Settings → Apps to confirm it is enabled.
- Update the app if its link-handling support was added or fixed in a newer release.
- When Android shows a chooser, select the intended app and use the option to remember the choice only if you want that handler consistently.
- If the app is absent from a default selector, do not assume Android is ignoring you; it may not support that role.
For mail, calendar, search, and other tasks, compare apps by the specific role you want to replace. Android’s default-app screens may expose one selector for a role but none for another, while a site’s links may still be governed separately by App Links.
Use disabling only as a last resort
Some devices let you disable preinstalled Google apps, including Chrome, Gmail, or Calendar, from their Settings app. Android Help notes that availability depends on the device and that disabling a system app can cause other apps to misbehave or delete data associated with the disabled app. The warning appears in Android’s guidance on default search engines and apps.
- Back up or export anything stored only in the app you plan to disable.
- Open Settings → Apps and select the app.
- Tap Disable only if the button is offered and you understand the consequences.
- Test essential functions, such as sign-in links, mail handoff, and system notifications.
- To undo the change, return to the same app screen and tap Enable.
Disabling an app is broader than changing a browser, search, or domain preference. Try the targeted control first so other apps retain the component they expect.

The Google app still keeps pages inside itself
- Open the Google app’s profile menu and verify Settings → General → Open web pages in the app is off.
- Use the page’s More → Open in browser command to confirm that a browser can handle the URL.
- If the command works but the preference does not persist, check whether the Google app has an update or whether your device administrator controls app settings.
Links from every other app still launch Chrome
- Revisit Settings → Apps → Default apps → Browser app.
- Confirm the replacement browser is enabled and selected, not merely installed.
- Test with a plain website link that is not associated with an installed service app.
Only one service keeps taking over
- Open that service app’s Open by default screen.
- Turn off Open supported links or remove the relevant domain selections.
- Retest the exact domain; another domain may have a separate association.
A chooser appears every time
A repeated chooser means Android has not committed to one eligible handler for that request. Check that your preferred app is installed, enabled, and selected in the relevant default screen. For a domain-specific link, inspect the app’s supported-link choices rather than changing the global browser.

The replacement does not appear at all
Verify that it is a browser or other app capable of the requested role. A general-purpose app cannot be forced into a system selector for a role it does not advertise. Install or enable a compatible replacement, then reopen the selector.
How Android decides which app receives a link
At a technical level, Android evaluates the action and URI, eligible installed apps, user-selected defaults, and any verified association between a website and an app. Android Developers describes ordinary deep-link resolution as opening the designated default handler when one exists; otherwise Android can use the sole eligible app or display a selection dialog. The deep-link documentation also explains why a URL that looks like a normal web address can be treated differently from another URL.
App Links add a verification step. The app and website publish a relationship for particular domains, and Android uses that relationship when deciding whether the app is approved to receive the link. This is why a global browser change may appear to work for ordinary sites but not for links belonging to a service app.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →In-app browsers add another layer: the app that displayed the search or feed may deliberately render the page itself. In that case Android never had an opportunity to launch your browser until you choose an external-browser command or disable the app’s internal-viewer preference.
Keep the settings straight
| Setting | Controls | Does not control |
|---|---|---|
| Google app → Settings → General → Open web pages in the app | Whether Google app search results render inside that app | Chrome’s search provider or Android’s global browser choice |
| Android → Apps → Default apps → Browser app | The browser used for eligible links from other apps | Google app’s internal viewer or every verified App Link |
| Chrome → Settings → Search engine | Searches entered into Chrome | Which app Android opens for a link |
| App → Open by default → Open supported links | Whether that app claims selected website domains | Unrelated domains and searches entered in a browser |
What to check after making a change
- Test the original trigger, not just a manually typed URL. A Google result, a message link, and a notification can follow different paths.
- Test one ordinary website and one site that has an installed companion app.
- Look at the visible address bar and menus so you know which app actually handled the page.
- Keep the replacement app enabled while testing; disabling it can make Android fall back to another handler.
- If a manufacturer’s Settings labels differ, use its built-in Settings search for default browser, supported links, or open by default.
The reliable approach is surgical: disable the Google app’s internal viewer for Google results, select a browser in Android’s default-app screen for ordinary links, change Chrome’s search engine for Chrome searches, and edit supported-link domains when one installed app captures a particular site.
