Google Play can keep showing the same Android games because its recommendations learn from signals such as your previous Play activity, acquired games, app usage and Google Account information. Those signals are only part of the ranking system, and their influence changes by surface, device and personal settings. You can broaden discovery by checking Personalization in Play, reviewing Play History, searching with specific genres and gameplay constraints, and comparing personalized shelves with search, charts and editorial selections. These steps can change the signals Play uses, but Google does not promise that any single setting will permanently eliminate repeated recommendations.
Why does Google Play keep recommending the same games?
Repeated suggestions usually reflect a narrow feedback loop rather than one broken switch. When you install, open, rate or otherwise engage with games, Play receives evidence about what it thinks you prefer. It can then present more games resembling that evidence. If you repeatedly open the same recommendation shelf, those choices may provide additional confirmation that the category is relevant.
Google says Play can use prior Play activity, acquired games and apps, app usage, and information associated with your Google Account. The exact mix and weighting are not public, and they can vary by device, country, surface and context. A recommendation on a personalized home page is therefore not generated in exactly the same way as a search result or a chart position.
Personalized signals reinforce established interests
Suppose you installed several strategy games and spent time in them. A personalized shelf may infer that strategy is useful to you and retrieve more titles with similar characteristics. That can be convenient when you want a familiar style, but it can also make the catalog feel smaller than it is. A game you once tried, a genre you often search for, or a cluster of apps linked to your account can all keep influencing what appears.

Different Play surfaces answer different questions
“For You” recommendations attempt to match your interests. Search emphasizes the relevance of your current query. Top Charts primarily communicate popularity. Editorial collections are manually selected by Google Play editors and merchandisers using factors such as quality, novelty, design, usefulness and breadth of appeal. Treating all four routes as one feed makes a repetition problem harder to diagnose.
Ranking has more than one objective
Google’s public discovery guidance says ranking can account for query or surface relevance, app quality, editorial value, advertising and user experience. A title may therefore remain visible because it is popular, commercially eligible or broadly useful even when it is not a fresh personal match. This is why removing one account signal cannot guarantee an entirely different list.
How Google Play’s recommendation system works
Google DeepMind describes Play’s recommender at a high level as three connected stages. The description explains the architecture, not the current production weights or a diagnostic tool for an individual account.
1. Candidate generator
The candidate generator retrieves a pool of possible apps and games. It uses information about what an app does and signals about the user’s past preferences to find items that could be relevant. This stage is designed for breadth and speed; it does not decide the final order by itself.
2. Reranker
A reranker estimates how well each candidate matches the user across multiple dimensions. Those dimensions can include the inferred topic or gameplay style, the context in which the item is being shown and the quality signals available to Play. Candidates that look similar to your established activity can continue to score well here.

3. Multi-objective optimization
A final model selects suitable candidates while balancing multiple objectives. Google has not published every current input or its relative weight, so readers should not assume that turning off one setting removes all personalization. The same underlying system can also behave differently on a home recommendation shelf, a search page or another Play surface.
Compare discovery routes before changing anything
Identify where repetition occurs. The following comparison shows what each route is primarily designed to do and how to use it when you want variety.

Use at least two routes when a shelf repeats itself. A targeted search followed by an editorial collection can expose different candidates than repeatedly scrolling the same personalized row.
Step 1: Check Personalization in Play
- Open the Google Play Store app on your Android device.
- Tap your profile icon to open the account menu.
- Select Personalization in Play.
- Review whether personalization is enabled and inspect the controls for device details and acquired Play content.
- Decide whether Play should use those account signals for personalization, then save any change shown by the app.
Turning personalization off limits some account-based tailoring; it does not make Play an entirely neutral catalog. Google says device information, country and installed apps may still affect the experience. A change can also take up to 24 hours to appear everywhere, so judge the result only after that propagation period.
Step 2: Review and manage Play History
- Return to the Play Store profile menu and open the history or activity controls associated with Play personalization.
- Inspect recent Play activity and app-usage entries.
- Delete individual events if one-off searches or installs are distorting your current interests, or use the available option to delete broader history.
- Choose whether future Play activity and app usage should be saved to Play History.
Deleting Play History does not uninstall or remove games and apps you acquired. It also does not erase data managed by separate features, including a Play Games profile. History controls affect the information available for this personalization process, not every record connected with your Google services.

What a history change can and cannot do
Removing old events may reduce the influence of those events after Play updates its systems, but Google does not establish a guaranteed improvement in recommendation variety. If the same games remain, other signals—such as your device, country, installed apps, popularity, quality or the surface you are viewing—may still be producing them.
Step 3: Search for the experience you actually want
Search is the most direct way to replace a broad personalized guess with an explicit request. Name the characteristic that matters instead of typing only “games” or a broad genre.
Use genre plus a mechanic
Combine a genre with a play pattern: “turn-based tactical roguelike,” “cozy farming simulation,” “offline puzzle adventure,” or “short-session tower defense.” These are practical query ideas, not guaranteed Google filters. Their purpose is to give Play more specific text about your intent.
Add constraints that affect suitability
Include requirements such as “offline,” “local multiplayer,” “controller support,” “one-hand,” “under 10 minutes,” “no internet,” or “tablet.” A constraint can produce a more useful change than switching from one broad genre label to another.
Search for adjacent categories
If role-playing games dominate your feed, try a neighboring mechanic rather than another generic RPG query: “deck-building strategy,” “turn-based tactics,” “story-driven puzzle,” or “management sim.” Adjacent terms can reveal different catalogs while preserving the type of decision-making you enjoy.

Evaluate results deliberately
- Open several candidates instead of installing the first result.
- Read the description, screenshots, recent reviews and device-compatibility information.
- Check whether the listing actually satisfies your stated constraint.
- Use search results as a starting set, then compare them with an editorial collection or a chart.
Google’s documentation supports query relevance as one ranking input, but it does not promise that a particular phrase will produce an unbiased or permanently new list.
Step 4: Use charts and editorial collections for different reasons
Read Top Charts as popularity signals
Charts can help you see games with broad adoption, but they answer “what is popular?” rather than “what is a good match for this account?” A chart position should not be treated as evidence that a title is high quality for your specific needs or that it will be unlike games already shown to you.
Look for editorial curation
Editorial selections are assembled by Play editors and merchandisers. Google says these selections can reflect quality, novelty, design, usefulness and breadth of appeal. Because the basis is manual curation rather than only your history, an editorial page can be a useful second route when a personalized shelf is repetitive. The selection still reflects Google’s editorial judgment, not a personal guarantee.

Choose a privacy and variety balance
There is no universally correct setting. More account history can make familiar recommendations convenient; less history can reduce the amount of personal information used for that purpose, while leaving contextual tailoring in place.

When the same games still appear
Confirm which page is repeating
Note whether the repetition occurs in “For You,” a search result, a chart or an editorial page. Each route has a different selection basis, so changing account history may have little effect on a popularity chart or a query that is too broad.
Allow for propagation time
After changing personalization controls, wait up to 24 hours before deciding that nothing changed. Close and reopen the Play Store and verify that you are viewing the intended Google Account if multiple accounts are present on the device.

If you disabled personalization but still see familiar titles, use searches that specify mechanics and constraints. Contextual signals and catalog-wide ranking still operate when account-based tailoring is reduced.
Check installed-app and device effects
Google states that installed apps, device details and country can influence Play’s experience. A device optimized for a particular screen size, operating system capability or market may continue to receive similar candidates even after history changes.
Do not expect a diagnostic reset button
Google’s public material does not provide a user-level report showing exactly why one game appeared or a control that resets every ranking input at once. It also does not establish how much recommendation variety any setting change will produce. Treat a change as an experiment in the signals available to Play, not as a guaranteed repair.
What the 40% recommendation figure means
Google for Developers states that 40% of app installs on Google Play come from recommendations on a page last updated in 2025. This is a Google-published, platform-level figure. It is not a game-only percentage, not a measurement of repetitive recommendations and not an independent current study. The number explains why Play invests heavily in recommendation surfaces; it does not predict what any individual account will see.

The bottom line
Repetitive Android game recommendations are usually an expected consequence of personalized ranking, multiple recommendation objectives and repeatedly using the same discovery surface. Review Personalization in Play and Play History when you want to change account signals, but remember that device, country, installed apps, popularity and editorial decisions can still shape what appears. The most reliable way to broaden exploration is to combine those controls with precise searches and deliberate use of search, charts and editorial collections rather than relying on one “For You” shelf.
