An NFL app usually shows “unavailable in your location” because the game’s broadcast rights do not match the service, market, device, or subscription you are using. A local Sunday afternoon game, an out-of-market game, a national broadcast, a postseason matchup, and an international stream follow different distribution rules. The fastest fix is to identify the exact game and classify its broadcast before changing devices or networks.
What the location message actually means
The message is generally a rights or eligibility result, not proof that your internet connection is broken. NFL games are assigned to particular broadcast routes, and those routes depend on the viewer’s market. “Local” means the game is being shown on television in your local market. “Out-of-market” means the game is available outside the designated broadcast region where you are located. The same matchup can therefore be available to one viewer and blocked for another.
The result also depends on the date, country, app, device, and subscription. A service may carry the game in one category but not another—for example, live on a phone, available through a pay-TV login, or offered as a replay rather than a live stream. Do not assume that one NFL subscription carries every game. Start with the matchup, kickoff time, and your location, then compare the game with the applicable route below.

These destinations are not interchangeable. A subscription that carries Sunday afternoon games does not automatically include a Thursday night or Monday night broadcast, and a national broadcast is not treated like an out-of-market Sunday afternoon game.
How local and out-of-market rules affect access
Local games
A local game is one shown in your designated television market. Because local stations already have distribution rights, an out-of-market package normally does not unlock that same game. If your app says the game is unavailable while a local CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, or ABC broadcast is scheduled, look for the local network’s authorized stream or your pay-TV provider instead.
Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games
Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games are the main territory of NFL Sunday Ticket. YouTube describes Sunday Ticket as access to regular-season Sunday afternoon CBS and FOX games that are not carried on local channels. It excludes local games, national broadcasts such as Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football, and postseason games: YouTube TV’s NFL viewing guide.

National and postseason games
Nationally televised games follow their named broadcaster, even if you subscribe to Sunday Ticket. Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, selected NFL Network games, and event-specific games can each require a different service. Sunday Ticket also excludes postseason games, so it is not a complete playoff package.

NFL+ support says live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games are available on phones or tablets. Out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season games are not live on NFL+; the NFL directs viewers to Sunday Ticket for those games. NFL+ also lists live out-of-market preseason games on supported devices, live audio for every game, and Premium replays and RedZone features: NFL+ game availability.
If you expect NFL+ to show a live game on a smart TV or streaming box, the device may be the reason for the error rather than your location. Why YouTube TV or Sunday Ticket can show the wrong location
YouTube determines game availability from the current viewing area. Its help page says location permissions must be enabled, and that games can change when you travel or move. If the service appears to place you in the wrong market, check the current viewing area displayed in YouTube TV and the location permission for the device, browser, or app: YouTube TV NFL Sunday Ticket help.

- At home, confirm that YouTube TV shows your present home or current viewing area rather than an old address.
- On a phone, tablet, browser, or streaming device, allow the location permission requested by YouTube TV.
- After moving or traveling, review the displayed area before judging a game as blacked out.
- Do not assume that changing Wi-Fi networks will change broadcast rights; the service still applies its market rules.
Location data is only one part of eligibility. A correctly detected location cannot make Sunday Ticket show a local game, make NFL+ provide a live out-of-market Sunday afternoon game, or turn a national broadcast into a Sunday Ticket feed.
Watching outside the United States
International rights use a different service route. The NFL’s viewing guide directs viewers outside the United States to NFL Game Pass International through DAZN. NFL+ support lists NFL+ as available in the United States only. A U.S. subscription therefore does not establish access when you are abroad, and an international subscription’s coverage can vary by country and season. Confirm the country-specific service and the exact game listing before paying or troubleshooting: NFL viewing guide and NFL+ game availability.
A step-by-step way to find the correct stream
- Write down the exact matchup and kickoff. Games on the same day can use different networks, and a schedule can change during a season.
- Check the local listing. Use the NFL’s weekly schedule and local-listing or ZIP-code availability route on its Ways to Watch guidance. This establishes whether the game is local, national, or out of market.
- Classify the broadcast. Mark it as a local Sunday afternoon game, an out-of-market Sunday afternoon game, a national broadcast, a postseason game, an international game, or an exclusive event.
- Match the category to the service. Use the named broadcaster for national games, Sunday Ticket for eligible out-of-market Sunday afternoon games, and an authorized local stream for a local game.
- Check the subscription’s scope. Confirm that your account has the channel, add-on, or standalone product that carries this category. Sunday Ticket does not include local, national, or postseason games; NFL+ does not provide live out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season games.
- Check the device restriction. For NFL+, test a supported phone or tablet when the game is a live local or primetime broadcast. A connected-TV app may not be eligible for that live feed.
- Check location permissions and viewing area. In YouTube TV, review the current viewing area and allow the location permission requested by the device or browser, especially after travel or a move.
- Retry only after eligibility is established. Reopening the app can clear a transient error, but it cannot override a market restriction or missing subscription.
Common situations and the likely explanation
“I bought Sunday Ticket, but my local team’s Sunday game is blocked.”
Sunday Ticket is for eligible Sunday afternoon CBS and FOX games outside your local channels. A game carried locally is excluded, so use the local station or an authorized local-network streaming option.

“NFL+ shows the game on my phone, but not my television.”
That behavior is consistent with NFL+’s device rule for live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games. Use a supported phone or tablet for the live stream, or use participating TV-provider credentials when the game is included in your pay-TV subscription. “I am traveling and the game disappeared.”
YouTube says availability is determined by the current viewing area, which can change when you travel. Check the area shown in YouTube TV and the device’s location permission. The game may also legitimately be different in the market you are visiting.
“I have an NFL subscription, but Monday Night Football is unavailable.”
An NFL subscription is not a universal live-game pass. Monday Night Football follows its ESPN or ABC distribution route, while NFL+ and Sunday Ticket have the limits described above. Check the current schedule and the subscription that includes the named broadcaster.
“I am outside the United States and my U.S. app is blocked.”
International rights are separate. Check NFL Game Pass International through DAZN for your country rather than assuming U.S. NFL+ or Sunday Ticket rules apply.

The official guidance does not establish one universal fix for every app error. If the game should be eligible after you have checked its category, subscription, device, and location, contact the relevant service with enough detail to identify the rights decision:

- the app or website name;
- the exact matchup and kickoff time;
- your country and, if relevant, the city or current viewing area;
- the device type and operating system;
- the subscription, add-on, or pay-TV provider used;
- the exact error text; and
- whether you are at home, traveling, or recently moved.
Support can then distinguish an account or permission problem from a correct market restriction. Avoid relying on a VPN, a different network, or a second device as a way to override broadcast rights; changing the connection does not guarantee eligibility and may create another location mismatch.
Where to look for a particular local game
YouTube’s current NFL viewing guide conditionally lists Paramount+ for local CBS games, FOX One for local FOX games, and Peacock for Sunday Night Football and local NBC games. These are conditional examples, not a guarantee for every viewer: the actual network assignment, local availability, market, and account requirements still control access. Bottom line
“Unavailable in your location” usually means the app is enforcing the game’s broadcast territory, not that the stream is randomly broken. Identify the game, determine whether it is local, out of market, national, postseason, or international, then use the service and device authorized for that category. Verify YouTube TV’s current viewing area and location permission when those controls are involved, and use the relevant provider’s support channel if an otherwise eligible game still fails.
