An M.2 drive is not a different kind of storage from an SSD: many M.2 drives are SSDs. If an M.2 listing costs less than another SSD, the difference is more likely to reflect the specific drive, capacity, performance tier, seller, or price timing than the M.2 label itself. To compare fairly, identify whether each drive is M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, or 2.5-inch SATA, then check both price and compatibility.

Why the comparison is misleading

“M.2” describes a drive’s physical form factor: its shape and size. “SSD” describes solid-state storage. An SSD can be made in M.2 or 2.5-inch form factors, among others. Dell puts it plainly: “M.2 is simply the form factor, the physical shape and size of the drive.” Dell’s support guide also cautions that an M.2 slot may support SATA, NVMe, or both.

That means “M.2 versus SSD” is not an apples-to-apples price comparison. The actual choices are usually an M.2 NVMe SSD, an M.2 SATA SSD, or a 2.5-inch SATA SSD. The M.2 label alone does not establish the drive’s protocol, speed, or price.

What can explain a price difference?

Capacity and price per gigabyte

Compare drives with the same usable capacity, then calculate price per gigabyte as one reference point. A lower total price may simply buy less storage. Price per gigabyte is useful, but it does not capture performance, warranty, or whether the drive fits your system.

Protocol and performance tier

M.2 drives can use either SATA or PCIe/NVMe; M.2 is not synonymous with NVMe. NVMe uses PCIe and can offer higher throughput potential than SATA, but the interface alone does not tell you how a drive will perform in sustained work or in your particular workload. SanDisk describes SATA as no longer consistently cheaper than NVMe at common capacities, while IBM characterizes mainstream SATA and NVMe prices as roughly comparable and says high-end Gen 5 NVMe remains more expensive. These are broad descriptions, not a controlled survey of current retail listings. See SanDisk’s comparison and IBM’s overview.

Kingston gives 600 MB/s as the SATA 3.0 interface ceiling in its explainer; this is a theoretical interface limit, not a promise of a particular drive’s real-world result. PCIe/NVMe can offer higher throughput, but headline sequential speeds should not be treated as a guarantee of sustained performance. Kingston’s M.2 explainer distinguishes SATA M.2 from NVMe M.2.

Seller and timing

Retail prices can change sharply, so a listing is a dated observation, not a universal market price. Tom’s Hardware reported that a Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB was listed at $113 one year before its 2026 report and $363.49 at reporting time, a 221.5% increase in that comparison. The report described selected retail prices as abnormal and said they did not establish a reasonable 2026 SSD price. This is an example for one model and capacity, not a representative price index or a current quote. Read Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 pricing report for its context.

For a useful price comparison, note the exact model, capacity, seller, geography, and date. A market-wide claim that M.2 drives are cheaper than SSDs is not established by the available pricing evidence.

Check compatibility before buying

A lower-priced drive is not a saving if your computer cannot use it. Confirm all of these details in the computer or motherboard documentation:

  • Protocol: Check whether the M.2 slot supports SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or both. The drive and slot must share a supported protocol.
  • Physical length: Common M.2 SSD sizes include 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110; the numbers give width and length in millimeters. A system’s board space determines which lengths it can accommodate.
  • Capacity and workload: Choose a capacity that meets your needs and compare performance for the work you actually do, not only advertised sequential speeds.
  • Warranty and seller: Include warranty terms and the seller when judging whether two listings are genuinely comparable.

Kingston’s SSD FAQ covers M.2 dimensions and interface compatibility. Dell recommends checking the computer’s service or user manual because slot support varies by system.

A practical way to compare two listings

  1. Write down the full drive type. Record the model, capacity, form factor, and whether it is SATA or PCIe/NVMe.
  2. Verify your system’s support. Use the motherboard or computer manual to confirm protocol support and allowed M.2 length; do not assume every M.2 slot accepts every M.2 SSD.
  3. Compare like with like. Match capacity and performance tier where possible. Calculate price per gigabyte, then consider sustained workload performance, warranty, and seller.
  4. Record when and where you saw the price. Include seller and geography. Recheck the listing before buying because storage prices can move substantially.

If one drive is still cheaper after those checks, that is a difference between those products and listings—not proof that M.2 as a category costs less than SSDs.
