An iPhone can feel warm during demanding work such as gaming, camera recording, navigation, wireless charging, setup, restoring a backup, an iOS update, or high-quality streaming. That is usually expected if the phone cools afterward. Slowness becomes a problem when it continues after the workload and temperature return to normal, or when iOS reports a temperature warning. Use the checks below to separate heat-related throttling from network trouble, low storage, Low Power Mode, temporary post-update activity, and battery aging.
When iPhone heat is normal
The processor, graphics hardware, camera system, modem and charging circuitry all consume more power during intensive work. That power becomes heat. Apple says an iPhone may normally become warm during first-time setup, restoring a backup, installing software updates (especially major releases), wireless charging, processor- or graphics-intensive apps and games, camera use, and high-quality video streaming. Navigation and GPS tracking can add heat because the phone is working with location sensors and cellular radios continuously.
Normal warmth should ease when the task ends. Apple’s support guidance says these conditions are normal and that the device will cool when the process or activity is finished. If there is no temperature warning and the phone remains responsive, you can generally continue using it while reducing the workload or moving away from heat and direct sunlight.

| Condition | Apple’s stated range | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Ambient use | 0–35°C (32–95°F) | Use the iPhone within this surrounding-temperature range whenever possible. |
| Storage while powered off | −20–45°C (−4–113°F) | A parked car can exceed this range even when the weather outside feels moderate. |
Prolonged exposure to very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life. A hot car, a sunny dashboard, or a case-covered phone running navigation and recording video can combine several heat sources at once. The temperature limits are Apple operating guidance, not results from a population study, and actual behavior varies by model, software version, workload, charger and environment.

How heat makes an iPhone appear slow
When internal temperature rises beyond the normal operating range, iOS reduces activity to protect the phone. You may notice several effects at once:
- Wired or wireless charging slows or pauses.
- The display dims substantially or turns black.
- Cellular signal becomes weaker while radios enter a lower-power state.
- The camera flash or other camera features become temporarily unavailable.
- Games and graphics-heavy apps deliver lower frame rates.
- Photo, video or other processing takes longer.
- During navigation, the display may switch off while spoken directions continue.
These are protective responses, not proof that the processor has failed. Performance should improve as the device returns to a moderate temperature. A temperature warning is a different situation from ordinary warmth: it means the phone needs to stop or greatly reduce use until it cools.
What to do immediately when the phone is hot
If there is no temperature warning
- Stop the demanding activity temporarily: leave the game, pause high-resolution streaming, stop recording, or end navigation if you can do so safely.
- Move out of direct sunlight and away from a hot vehicle or other heat source. Remove the phone from an enclosed, heat-trapping location.
- Disconnect wireless charging or a cable if charging is adding heat, then let the phone rest while its temperature falls.
- Once it feels closer to room temperature, resume the task at a lower workload and watch whether warmth returns quickly.
Do not rely on a cooling fan, freezer, ice pack or other rapid-cooling method. A sudden temperature change can create condensation and does not replace Apple’s instruction to use a cooler environment and allow time for cooling.
If a temperature warning appears
Follow Apple’s recovery sequence exactly:
- Turn off the iPhone.
- Move it to a cooler place away from direct sunlight.
- Allow it to cool before turning it on and resuming use.
Do not keep charging or operating it while the warning is present. If warnings recur in a moderate environment during ordinary use, record what the phone was doing and seek Apple or authorized service rather than repeatedly forcing it to run hot.
Diagnose slowness after the iPhone has cooled
If performance is still poor after the phone is cool, heat may not be the main cause. Work through these checks in order; each one tests a different failure mode.
1. Test the network before blaming the phone
An app can look slow when the iPhone itself is responsive but the network is congested. Moving between cell towers can also cause brief delays while the modem reconnects. Try the same action in another location or on a reliable Wi‑Fi network. If pages and cloud-based apps become normal on Wi‑Fi, the issue is likely cellular coverage or congestion rather than processor speed. If cellular problems persist across locations, contact your carrier.
Network testing matters most for web pages, streaming, cloud storage, social feeds and multiplayer games. It does not explain a delay when opening the Settings app, typing locally, or scrolling through content already stored on the phone.
2. Check available storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Apple recommends keeping at least 1 GB free. The screen shows which apps and media consume space and may offer storage recommendations. Offload or delete apps you no longer need, remove downloaded media, and review large photo or video files. Keep enough free space for iOS and apps to create temporary files; a nearly full device can behave sluggishly even when the processor is cool.
After freeing space, give the phone a little time to finish housekeeping. Re-test the same task rather than judging performance from one app launch.
3. Check Low Power Mode
Open Settings > Battery and inspect Low Power Mode. This mode reduces or defers some activity to extend battery life, and Apple notes that features can work more slowly while it is enabled. If you need full performance and the battery level and temperature permit it, turn Low Power Mode off, run the workload again, and then re-enable it when maximum speed is no longer important.
4. Stop force-closing every app
Force-closing an app that is frozen or not responding is reasonable. Swiping away every app after each use is not a general speed-up technique. Apple warns that unnecessary force-closing can make the phone slower because each app must reload its data the next time you open it. Let iOS manage suspended apps unless one is actually stuck.

5. Check Battery Health
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health; the exact wording and available options vary by iPhone model and iOS release. Read the capacity and performance messages shown there. If iOS recommends service, follow the on-screen guidance. A service recommendation is more meaningful than warmth alone because it connects a measured battery condition with possible performance management.
6. Look for temporary setup or update activity
After initial setup, restoring a backup or installing an update, the iPhone may continue indexing, analyzing photos, synchronizing data or completing other background work. In Settings > Battery, review Insights and the app and system activity breakdown. If battery life and responsiveness changed immediately after an update, Apple advises waiting a few days before judging the change; post-update work can temporarily increase energy use and warmth.
Battery aging and performance management
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries lose capacity as they chemically age. Aging can also reduce the battery’s ability to deliver peak power. When iOS detects conditions in which an unexpected shutdown is more likely, it can dynamically manage the maximum performance of components such as the CPU and GPU.
Performance management can show up as longer app launches, lower scrolling frame rates, a dimmer backlight, lower speaker volume, gradual frame-rate reductions in some apps, flash unavailability in extreme cases, or background apps reloading. Cold temperatures and a low charge can produce temporary effects; substantial chemical aging can make them more persistent. Battery replacement may improve performance when the battery is the documented cause, but heat by itself does not diagnose battery failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen service is justified
- Battery Health displays an explicit service recommendation.
- Unexpected shutdowns or severe performance changes occur together with a degraded-battery message.
- Slowness remains after cooling, network testing, storage cleanup and Low Power Mode checks.
- The phone repeatedly reaches a temperature warning during ordinary conditions.
Use Apple’s or an authorized provider’s service guidance for the specific model. The available Battery Health text, maximum-capacity information and performance-management controls differ by device and iOS version, so do not compare a percentage or message from one model directly with another.
Heat, charging and demanding activities
Wireless charging
Wireless charging normally produces more warmth than many light-use tasks because power is transferred through coils and charging circuitry. If the phone becomes noticeably hot, pause charging, move it to a cooler surface away from sunlight, and resume after it cools. Charging may automatically slow or pause when temperature protection activates.
Games and graphics-heavy apps
High frame-rate games can keep the CPU, GPU and display active for long periods. Lower the game’s frame-rate or graphics setting, take breaks between long sessions, and avoid playing in direct sun or inside a hot car. If frame rates drop only after the phone warms up and recover later, thermal regulation is the likely explanation. If the game is slow even when the phone is cool, test storage, network conditions and Low Power Mode.
Camera recording and video processing
Recording high-resolution video, using stabilization, processing photos or recording while connected to a cellular network can keep several systems busy simultaneously. Stop recording if the display dims, processing time increases sharply or camera features become unavailable. Let the phone cool before starting another long capture.

Navigation and GPS
Navigation combines location tracking, screen activity, audio, cellular data and often charging. Keep the phone out of direct sunlight and do not leave it on a hot dashboard. If iOS turns off the display during a temperature event, spoken directions may continue, but you should follow the cooling procedure before normal use.
Separating heat from other slowdowns
The timing and scope of the problem provide useful clues. A drop in game frame rate after a long session, followed by recovery after cooling, points toward thermal regulation. A delay limited to web pages, cloud files or streaming points first toward network conditions. Sluggishness across Settings, locally stored photos and offline apps suggests checking storage, Low Power Mode and Battery Health instead.
Compare the same action before and after the phone returns to a moderate temperature. Note whether charging is connected, whether the battery is low, whether the phone recently updated, and whether the problem occurs on Wi‑Fi as well as cellular data. This simple record helps distinguish a repeatable environmental trigger from a persistent device issue without assuming that every warm episode has the same cause.

A practical decision tree
- Is the phone hot right now? Stop the demanding task and move it away from heat. If a warning appears, power it off and let it cool.
- Does it return to normal after cooling? Treat the episode as workload- or environment-related and reduce heat input during similar activities.
- Is only online content slow? Test another location or Wi‑Fi; persistent cellular trouble belongs with the carrier.
- Is the phone’s free space below 1 GB? Use iPhone Storage recommendations and remove or offload content.
- Is Low Power Mode enabled? Turn it off temporarily when full performance is required and conditions are safe.
- Did the issue start after setup or an update? Review Battery Insights and allow a few days for background work to finish.
- Does Battery Health recommend service? Follow that recommendation; battery replacement is relevant only when battery condition supports it.
Common mistakes that make heat or slowness worse
- Leaving an iPhone in a parked car, on a dashboard or in direct sun while navigating or recording.
- Continuing to charge and play a demanding game after the phone becomes very hot.
- Putting a hot phone in a freezer or against ice for rapid cooling.
- Assuming every slow app indicates a failing processor when the network is congested.
- Deleting or force-closing all apps repeatedly instead of closing only an unresponsive app.
- Judging battery life immediately after a major update without checking Battery Insights or allowing temporary background work to finish.
- Buying a cooling accessory or replacement battery before checking temperature behavior, storage, network conditions and Battery Health.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Apple’s temperature ranges, warnings and troubleshooting steps describe supported device behavior; they are not a controlled test of every iPhone model, case, charger, game or climate. Settings labels and Battery Health features can vary by model and iOS release. There is no named population statistic establishing how often heavy workloads make iPhones hot, so a warm phone should be judged by its recovery after the task, the presence of warnings and the results of the diagnostic checks above—not by a universal expectation about how hot it “should” feel.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my iPhone get warm during setup or an update?
Setup, backup restoration and major software updates can keep the processor, storage and network systems busy while iOS indexes, analyzes and synchronizes data. Warmth should ease when that work finishes. After an update, Apple advises allowing a few days before judging unusual battery use or responsiveness.
What temperature range is safe for using an iPhone?
Apple specifies an ambient operating range of 0–35°C (32–95°F). It lists −20–45°C (−4–113°F) for storage while powered off. A parked car or sunny dashboard can exceed those limits, and prolonged heat exposure can permanently shorten battery life.
Should I put a hot iPhone in a freezer or on ice?
No. Apple’s direction is to turn the phone off if a temperature warning appears, move it to a cooler place away from direct sunlight, and let it cool. Rapid cooling can create condensation and is not a recommended fix.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Why is only one app slow while the rest of the iPhone feels normal?
If the app depends on web services, cellular congestion or a tower handoff may be responsible. Test it on reliable Wi‑Fi or in another location. If the app is locally stored and remains slow when the phone is cool, check storage, Low Power Mode and Battery Health.
How much free storage should an iPhone have?
Apple recommends keeping at least 1 GB free. Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage and use its recommendations to offload or delete apps, downloaded media and other large files.
Does force-closing all apps make an iPhone faster?
No. Close an app when it is frozen or unresponsive, but routinely swiping away every app can make reopening slower because iOS must reload each app’s data.
Why does charging slow or stop when the phone is hot?
iOS can reduce or pause wired and wireless charging as a protective response to elevated temperature. Stop the demanding activity, move the phone away from heat and let it cool before resuming charging.
When should I replace the battery?
Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Follow an explicit service recommendation, especially if it accompanies unexpected shutdowns or persistent performance management. Warmth alone does not prove that the battery needs replacement.
Why does the screen go black during navigation?
During a temperature event, iOS may turn off the display while spoken navigation directions continue. Move the phone to a cooler environment and follow the power-off and cooling procedure if a temperature warning appears.
The Bottom Line
Warmth during gaming, charging, navigation, camera use, setup or updates is usually temporary. Stop adding heat, keep the iPhone within Apple’s temperature guidance and let it cool. If it remains slow, test the network, keep at least 1 GB free, check Low Power Mode and Battery Health, and allow a few days for post-update background work. A temperature warning requires powering off and cooling; repeated warnings or a Battery Health service message justify Apple or authorized service.
