An Epic Games Store download can fail for several different reasons, and the right fix depends on what you see. A progress bar that never moves is a stuck download; a bar that advances slowly is usually a connection, server, or launcher-limit problem. An error such as II-E1003 or IS-0003 points to a file, cache, permission, or installation issue. If the game is absent from your Library, the problem may be the account, filters, ownership, compatibility, or availability rather than downloading itself.
Use the symptom table below to choose a path, then apply the least disruptive steps first. Do not jump straight to reinstalling the launcher: Epic warns that reinstalling removes games installed through it.
Start by identifying the failure

Server conditions and launcher labels can change, so compare what you see with the current Epic Games Store Support instructions while you work. The procedures below are organized by symptom and consequence, not by a one-size-fits-all “fix.”

When an Epic download is completely stuck
If the progress indicator does not advance at all, use Epic’s targeted stuck-download procedure. It resets the launcher session and enables logging before you retry. The unusual sign-in order matters; do the steps in sequence.

- Sign out of your Epic Games account in the launcher, then sign out of the launcher itself if that option is shown.
- Close the launcher. Open Windows Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, locate Epic Games Launcher and any related Epic processes, select each one, and choose End task. This prevents a background process from keeping the stalled session open. - Open the launcher again and go to Settings. Turn on Enable Debug Logging (the wording may vary slightly with the current launcher build).
- Return to the sign-in screen and choose Sign In Later instead of completing the normal sign-in immediately.
- Select the game you were trying to install. When the launcher redirects you to sign in, complete the sign-in and choose Download.
This is a recovery sequence, not a guarantee that every stalled transfer will resume. If the progress begins moving afterward, treat the remaining problem as a slow-download issue and use the network checks in the next section. If it stops again with an error code, follow that code’s branch instead of repeating the entire sequence indefinitely.
When the download works but is too slow
A moving progress bar means the launcher is receiving data, so troubleshoot throughput separately from a frozen queue. A slow rate can also fluctuate because the game server, your internet connection, or your local network is busy; do not assume that a single speed reading proves a launcher fault.
Check Epic’s service status first
Open Epic’s live Server Status page and look for incidents affecting the Epic Games Store, downloads, or authentication. A service-side incident cannot be repaired by changing files on your computer. Recheck the status if the launcher suddenly changes from normal speed to near-zero speed.

If your computer and router support it, connect with a wired Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is sufficient for this test; the cable itself is not a universal cure, but it removes wireless interference and signal-strength variables. If Ethernet is not practical, try another available connection, such as a different network or a phone hotspot where your data plan permits it. Stop the test if it incurs unexpected mobile charges.

Do not interpret one faster test as proof that the game will always download at that rate. The alternate connection only tells you whether the original network path is contributing to the slowdown.
Remove the launcher’s speed cap
- Open Epic Games Launcher Settings.
- Find the download or bandwidth option that limits download speed.
- Turn the limit off, apply the change if the launcher provides an Apply button, and retry the download.
If a limit was intentionally configured for other household traffic, record its original value before changing it so you can restore the setting later.
Check DNS, proxy, and allowed domains
Epic’s slow-download guidance calls out DNS configuration, proxy settings, and access to Epic’s allowed domains. A filtering DNS service, company proxy, security gateway, or incorrectly configured manual proxy can let the launcher open while blocking or slowing content delivery. Temporarily test with the normal automatic DNS and with a network that does not use the same proxy or filtering policy. On a managed school or work computer, ask the administrator to confirm that Epic’s required domains are permitted rather than bypassing policy yourself.

After each network change, restart the launcher and test the same download. Changing several network variables at once makes it difficult to identify which setting mattered.

Clear device and launcher cache when network checks do not explain the slowdown
Epic also recommends clearing the device or launcher cache. Use the detailed operating-system procedure in the cache section below; deleting random folders can remove settings or data that are unrelated to the problem.
Fix installation errors by code
II-E1003: the launcher cannot download game files for installation
Epic defines II-E1003 as a failure to download game files needed for installation. Work from the least destructive remedy to the most disruptive:
- Verify the game files. If the game has an entry in Library, use the Verify procedure below. This can repair differing local files without touching saved data.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher web cache. Exit the launcher completely first, remove only the cache folders listed for your operating system, and relaunch.
- Check for a current launcher version. Allow the launcher to complete any available update, then retry the installation.
- Review DNS. Return DNS to a functioning automatic configuration or test a known-working network if name resolution is failing.
- Reinstall the launcher only as a last resort. Epic’s guidance warns that this removes games installed through the launcher. You may need to download those games again after reinstalling.
Do not start with the reinstall step simply because it is listed on a support page. It has a much larger local consequence than verifying files or rebuilding the cache.
IS-0003: the launcher cannot create an installation directory
IS-0003 concerns creating a directory for the installation. The official remedies are narrower:

- Exit Epic Games Launcher completely and clear its web cache using the operating-system instructions below.
- Start the launcher with elevated permissions on Windows: right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut or executable and choose Run as administrator.
- Retry the installation and confirm that the selected drive and folder still exist.
Running as administrator is a targeted test for a permissions-related directory failure, not a setting you need to use for every launcher session. If the same error returns, check whether the destination folder is writable and whether security software or a controlled-folder policy is blocking creation.
Verify a game’s files without deleting saved data
Verification is appropriate when the game appears in Library but installation or launching reports damaged files. Epic Games Store Support explains that verifying the integrity of game files checks the files on your computer to ensure they are not damaged or corrupted. Files that differ from the expected versions are changed or repaired, and Epic states that saved data is not affected.
- Open Library in Epic Games Launcher.
- Find the game and select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the check and any repairs to finish before starting another installation attempt.
Verification can take a while because the launcher must inspect the local installation. Avoid interrupting it or launching multiple repair operations at once. If the game is only partially downloaded and no usable Library entry exists, verification may not be available; use the stuck, slow, or error-code path instead.
Clear the Epic Games Launcher web cache safely
Cache clearing works only if the launcher is fully closed. Leaving a background process running can recreate files while you delete them or keep the faulty session active. Remove the named web-cache folders, not the entire Epic directory.

Windows
- Exit Epic Games Launcher from its menu.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Escand end any remaining Epic Games Launcher processes. - In File Explorer, open
%localappdata%EpicGamesLauncherSaved. You can paste that path into the address bar. - Delete the folders named
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430when they are present. Some installations contain only one or two of them. - Reopen Epic Games Launcher and retry the download or installation.
macOS
- Quit Epic Games Launcher completely.
- In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncherand press Return. - Remove the cache contents that Epic identifies for the launcher, without deleting unrelated folders elsewhere in
~/Library. - Relaunch the application and test the download again.
The launcher rebuilds its cache after it starts. Cache clearing does not repair a server outage, grant ownership of a game, or create disk space that is not available; it is intended to discard stale launcher web data.
When the game is missing from Library
A missing Library item is not necessarily a failed download. Check account and catalog conditions before changing installation files.
Confirm the account and sign-in method
- Verify that you are signed into the Epic account that claimed or purchased the game.
- If you originally used an external sign-in provider, such as a console or social account, try that same sign-in method rather than creating or selecting a different Epic account.
- Sign out and back in after confirming the account; a stale session can leave the Library incomplete.
Reset Library display settings
- Clear active filters so a platform, genre, installed-only, or other view is not hiding the title.
- Refresh the Library.
- Check whether the Library itself is hidden or collapsed in the current launcher layout.
Check compatibility and entitlement conditions
Epic identifies operating-system compatibility as one reason a title may not be offered in the current Library view. A game can also be unavailable because it was refunded, was a limited-time build, had a fraudulent code revoked, or was gifted to another person’s account. These cases are account or availability issues; clearing cache will not restore an entitlement that no longer exists.
If the account, filters, compatibility, and availability all check out but the item remains absent, record the exact account sign-in method and any ownership message before contacting Epic support. Repeatedly reinstalling the launcher will not correct a missing entitlement.
When reinstalling the launcher is justified
Reinstalling can address a damaged launcher installation after verification, cache clearing, network checks, and an up-to-date launcher have failed. Use it only when the disruption is acceptable. Epic’s II-E1003 guidance explicitly warns that reinstalling removes games installed through the launcher, so plan for those games to be installed again afterward.
- Note which games are installed and where their files are stored.
- Finish or cancel active downloads cleanly rather than removing the launcher mid-transfer.
- Keep your Epic account credentials and any external sign-in method available.
- After reinstalling, sign into the same account and confirm the Library before starting a new download.
If the original symptom was only slow transfer, reinstalling is particularly unlikely to be the first useful move; server, connection, speed-limit, DNS, proxy, or cache checks are more directly related.

What to record before seeking support
Once the symptom-specific steps are exhausted, write down the exact error code or message, whether the progress bar was frozen or moving, the operating system, the affected game, and which step changed the behavior. If you enabled Debug Logging for a stuck download, leave that fact in your support description. This information helps distinguish an entitlement problem from a transfer, cache, permission, or launcher-installation problem without repeating destructive steps.
