Closing an Electron window does not necessarily quit the application. In Notifio, the control panel can close while background polling continues: the app leaves its window-all-closed handler empty, so that event does not trigger app.quit(). The handler is an application design choice, not a special Electron mode.
What an empty window-all-closed handler means
Electron emits window-all-closed after all application windows have closed. An app may listen for that event and decide what to do. If the callback is empty, as in Notifio, it makes no quit call in response. That leaves other lifecycle behavior and explicit quit paths in effect; an empty callback does not itself define the entire application lifecycle. See Electron’s app API.
Notifio’s author, Daniel Pertu, explains the design by saying: “The window is the app, by default, and for us the window is the least important part of the app: it is a control panel for a poll loop that should still be running when nobody is looking at it.” In this app, the ongoing monitoring task matters more than keeping its control panel open. The article describes a poll loop that drives a browser and closes browser contexts on system suspend and before quitting; those are Notifio-specific implementation details, not a universal Electron recipe. How Electron’s platform conventions fit in
Electron’s first-app tutorial describes common platform conventions, not rules enforced on every application. Windows and Linux apps generally quit after their last window closes; macOS apps generally remain active without windows and can recreate a window when the app is activated. The tutorial’s example implements the Windows/Linux convention by calling app.quit() when process.platform !== 'darwin', and handles macOS re-opening through the activate event. An app that needs background work to continue after its UI closes can choose a different behavior on any platform. It should also provide a clear way to find the still-running app, reopen its window, and quit deliberately.
How Notifio separates hiding a window from quitting
Notifio uses a tray menu with Show Window and Quit choices. Its window close handler hides the window unless a quitting flag has been set. Selecting the tray’s Quit command sets that flag and calls app.quit(); the app also sets the flag in before-quit. This is the author’s implementation, not required boilerplate for Electron apps. It lets an ordinary window close preserve the background task while an explicit quit can proceed.

This separation is useful whenever closing a window means “hide the controls” rather than “stop the service.” The window should remain easy to restore, and the quit action should be visible in the app’s tray or other appropriate interface.

Why window-all-closed is not the only way to quit
Electron documents that pressing Cmd+Q on macOS or calling app.quit() does not emit window-all-closed. With app.quit(), Electron emits before-quit, attempts to close the windows, and—if they close successfully—terminates by default. The quit lifecycle then reaches will-quit. These paths are why an empty last-window handler does not amount to disabling quitting. Consult the app API documentation when implementing or debugging lifecycle handlers.

Which behavior should your app choose?
- Quit on last-window close: Fits an app whose main task ends with its UI. Electron’s tutorial shows this common Windows/Linux convention.
- Keep running without windows: Fits an app with work that should continue in the background, such as Notifio’s polling. Provide a discoverable way to reopen the UI and an explicit quit action.
- Follow macOS’s window convention: Keep the app active after its windows close and recreate a window on activation when none is open, if that matches the app’s design.
Choose based on whether the background task should continue, not simply on whether Electron allows the process to stay alive. Then make the distinction between closing, hiding, and quitting clear to users.
