An automatic dispenser usually doses the wrong amount because its settings do not match the detergent, auto-dose is disabled for the selected cycle, the product is incompatible or loaded incorrectly, or residue and poor water flow are restricting the dispenser. Identify your washer model first, then check the feature status, dose and concentration settings, detergent type, drawer installation, and buildup before assuming a pump or sensor has failed.
Start by identifying the dispenser and washer model
An automatic reservoir is different from a conventional drawer that you fill for each load. Find the complete model number on the washer frame, door area, rating plate or control panel, then open that model’s manual. Control names, supported cycles, detergent limits, refill thresholds and drawer designs differ even within one manufacturer’s range.
Samsung says automatic dispensing is unavailable on most of its washer models, and LG notes that its all-model guidance may show images or controls that differ from a particular appliance. Do not transfer a setting or cleaning instruction from another model without checking your own manual.
Check whether auto-dose is actually enabled
Look for separate wash and rinse controls
On supported Samsung models, Dose per Wash controls detergent and Dose per Rinse controls fabric softener. Samsung says selected machines ship with both options off. The settings can also revert to off after a power outage lasting more than five minutes, and some cycles do not offer the controls.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Select the cycle you intend to run.
- Open the washer’s dispenser or dosing settings on the control panel.
- Confirm that detergent dosing is on and that the displayed amount is not zero or disabled.
- Check the rinse or softener setting separately if that tank is also being used.
- Run the cycle only after confirming that the selected program supports automatic dosing.
If the display has no dose option for that program, the absence may be a cycle limitation rather than a fault.
Match both dose and concentration to the detergent
Some washers treat quantity and concentration as separate controls. Samsung describes both a dose setting and a concentration setting. Set concentration to match the detergent label and the washer’s manual; a highly concentrated product may require a smaller dose. Samsung’s cited instructions say that detergent above 3x concentration should also use a reduced dose setting.
Do not assume labels such as LESS, AUTO and MORE mean the same quantity on every appliance. On the cited GE Profile UltraFast Combo, AUTO is the default, LESS is 40% below that default, and MORE is 40% above it. GE says LESS may suit higher-concentration detergent or very soft water, while MORE may suit heavily soiled loads. These are controls for that combo, not universal recommendations.

GE gives an example of approximately 1.5 ounces for an 8-pound normal load on AUTO. GE’s support page does not state a publication year; the page was accessed in 2026. Treat that figure as a specification for the named combo, not a general dose for other washers or load sizes.
- Too much detergent: lower the dose only after confirming that concentration is set correctly. Excess detergent can create heavy suds, leave residue and require longer rinsing.
- Too little detergent: verify that the reservoir is not near its refill threshold, the dose has not reset after an outage, and the selected cycle has not changed the setting.
- Changing detergent: recheck concentration and dose rather than carrying the previous product’s settings forward.
Verify the product, tank and loading method
Use only the liquid types the reservoir accepts
Samsung says its cited auto-dose compartments are for liquid detergent and liquid softener. Pods should go directly into the drum; if pods are being used, turn automatic detergent dispensing off so the tank is not dosed at the same time.
LG’s ezDispense guidance warns against putting powder, ultra-concentrated detergent, gel, or detergent that has clumped or solidified in the tanks. A product intended for a different dispenser can thicken, settle or block the path.

Check that the correct liquid is in the correct compartment. LG says accidentally switching detergent and softener can cause softener to be dispensed during the wash, leaving no detergent suds for that load.
Check the fill and closure
- Fill the detergent reservoir above the model’s refill threshold but never above its MAX line.
- Make sure the cap, tank and drawer are fully closed and seated as shown in the manual.
- Do not dilute a product unless the manufacturer allows it. Samsung says a product that is too thick may be diluted with water, but the MAX line must still be respected.
- For a conventional Whirlpool front-load drawer, put the liquid-or-powder selector in the position specified for that product. Whirlpool’s cited drawer guidance excludes packets, Oxi-type boosters, color-safe bleach and scented crystals from that drawer.
Those Whirlpool restrictions apply to the cited drawer design; they are not instructions for every washer.
Inspect flow, drawer alignment and residue
Detergent that remains in the compartment is often a flow problem rather than a dosing calculation. LG lists excess detergent, low water flow, hardened powder and residue buildup as typical causes. Samsung also identifies thick product, buildup, drawer setup and an unlevel washer that changes siphon action.

Check the physical setup
- Remove and reinstall the drawer or reservoir according to the model manual. Confirm that every insert and liquid/powder selector is in its correct position.
- Check that the washer is level. A tilted appliance can change the drawer’s angle and interfere with siphoning.
- Look for dried detergent around outlet holes, siphon caps and the compartment roof.
- Inspect the water inlet area for weak flow. If the machine fills slowly or unevenly, dispenser flushing may be incomplete.
- Do not overfill a conventional drawer. Whirlpool warns that excess product can be released early, before the intended stage of the cycle.
Clean and flush the dispenser
Manual cleaning
For the cited LG front-load guidance, remove the dispenser and clean both the drawer and its compartment with a soft brush or ordinary toothbrush and lukewarm water. Remove all residue, then reinstall the parts securely. LG recommends cleaning about weekly.
Samsung recommends periodic drawer cleaning because residue can block dispensing. Follow the exact removal and cleaning method in your manual; some reservoirs contain seals, siphon pieces or sensors that should not be forced apart.

Flush remaining soap
Samsung says rinse-and-spin cycles without additives can flush residue through the drawer and siphons. If bubbles still appear, repeat the manufacturer-approved flush until no remaining soap is visible. Do not add detergent during this diagnostic cycle.

The washer uses too much detergent
- Confirm that the dose has not been set to MORE or an equivalent high setting.
- Match concentration to the product and reduce the dose for a product the manual classifies as highly concentrated.
- Check for a tank assigned to the wrong liquid, which can make detergent appear to be consumed unexpectedly.
- Look for early dispensing caused by an overfilled conventional drawer or a mispositioned selector.
- Run an empty rinse-and-spin after cleaning if suds or residue remain in the tub.
Excess suds can cause poor rinsing, visible detergent residue and extended wash times. Whirlpool and GE describe those effects in their drawer guidance.
The washer uses too little or leaves detergent behind
- Check that auto-dose is on for the selected cycle and did not reset after a power interruption longer than five minutes.
- Confirm that the tank contains compatible liquid, is above the refill threshold and is not filled with thickened or solidified product.
- Clean the outlet, siphon and compartment, then reinstall the drawer.
- Check water flow and washer leveling, both of which affect flushing and siphon action.
The washer reports “refill” while the tank looks full
Do not rely on the visible liquid level alone. A refill warning can reflect the model’s threshold or sensing method, while a blocked outlet can leave liquid in the tank but prevent normal dosing. Verify the model-specific threshold, close the reservoir fully, clean the dispensing path and run the manufacturer’s diagnostic or flush procedure if one is provided.
How common manufacturer designs differ
| Manufacturer example | Controls or requirements documented | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung selected models | Dose per Wash, Dose per Rinse and a concentration setting; liquid detergent and liquid softener compartments; pods go in the drum | Settings may default to off, revert after an outage over five minutes, or be unavailable on some cycles and models |
| GE Profile UltraFast Combo | AUTO default; LESS 40% below default; MORE 40% above default; approximately 1.5 ounces for an 8-pound normal load on AUTO | Figures apply to that cited combo; GE’s support page gives no publication year |
| LG ezDispense guidance | Use compatible liquid; clean with a soft brush or toothbrush and lukewarm water; weekly cleaning is recommended in the cited front-load guidance | Do not use powder, ultra-concentrated detergent, gel or clumped product in the cited tanks |
| Whirlpool conventional front-load drawer | Liquid and powder use different selector positions; overfilling can cause early dispensing | Packets, Oxi-type boosters, color-safe bleach and scented crystals are excluded from the cited drawer |
When to request service
Escalate after you have verified the model, enabled dosing, matched concentration, loaded a compatible product, corrected the fill level, leveled the washer, cleaned the drawer and completed the manufacturer’s flush procedure. If the problem persists, contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician.
LG specifically recommends further support or a technician visit when its cleaning and setup steps do not resolve the issue. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that a particular pump, sensor or valve has failed, so a component diagnosis requires model-specific inspection.
A practical maintenance routine
- Check the reservoir level and cap before each wash.
- Keep detergent concentration and dose settings aligned with the product currently in use.
- Inspect the drawer and siphon openings weekly if your model’s guidance recommends that interval.
- Clean residue before it hardens; use a soft brush and lukewarm water where approved.
- After a long power outage, verify that automatic dosing has not returned to Off.
- Use a plain rinse-and-spin without additives when bubbles or soap film indicate buildup.
There is no published prevalence or failure-rate percentage in the cited manufacturer material. The reliable approach is model-specific diagnosis: settings first, then product and loading, then flow and cleaning, followed by service if those checks fail.
