The fastest way to find the cause is to check whether Apple recorded the transaction. Sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com or open your App Store purchase history. If the item is absent, investigate which Apple Account paid for it. If it is listed, the usual causes are a different Media & Purchases account, an app that is unavailable or incompatible on the second device, an in-app purchase that needs to be restored, a subscription the app has not recognized, or Family Sharing settings.
Work through the checks below in that order. It separates a missing purchase record from a delivery or entitlement problem, so you do not waste time reinstalling an app when the transaction belongs to another account.
1. Confirm that Apple recorded the transaction
Purchase history is the key diagnostic split. Apple provides both an online list and device-specific history views; its guide covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows methods at Apple’s purchase-history instructions.
- Open the online history. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and review the purchases. If you know the charge amount but not the product name, search by the amount.
- Check the device history. Open the App Store and use the account area to view purchase history. Compare the date and amount with your bank or card record.
- Try every Apple Account that might have paid. A purchase made with another account will not appear in the current account’s history, even when both accounts are used on the same device. For a family purchase, the purchasing family member’s account may be the one that owns the transaction.
If the item is not in any account’s history, Apple has no matching transaction to deliver to that device. Verify the charge details with your payment provider, then use Apple’s account and billing support rather than repeatedly attempting to restore an item that is not recorded.

A charge can also have a name that differs from the app’s name. That is why searching the known amount and checking the transaction date is more reliable than looking only for a familiar label.
2. Identify what kind of purchase is missing
Different App Store purchases have different delivery and recovery rules. Use the purchase type to choose the correct next step.
| Purchase type | Where access normally appears | Can it be restored? | First action |
|---|---|---|---|
| App download | App Store purchased items and the installed app | Redownload when the app is available for that device | Check the purchasing account, then look for the app in purchased items |
| Non-consumable in-app purchase | Inside the app, such as a permanently unlocked feature | Usually yes, through the app’s Restore Purchases control | Open the original app and run its restore command |
| Subscription | Apple Account subscription settings and the app’s own entitlement system | Some subscriptions can be restored through the app | Confirm status under Subscriptions, then use the app’s restore control |
| Consumable in-app purchase | Items delivered for use, such as game currency or hints | No. Consumables that have been used cannot be restored | Check the transaction and contact the developer if a charged, unused delivery is missing |
The distinction matters: reinstalling an app cannot recreate a spent consumable, while a permanent feature may simply need an entitlement refresh. Apple explains these categories and the restore process in its in-app-purchase troubleshooting guide.

3. Match the Apple Account to the device
Having the same app installed on two devices does not prove that both devices are using the account that purchased it. Check the account shown for Media & Purchases and compare it with the account that appears beside the transaction in purchase history.
- If the accounts differ, sign in to Media & Purchases with the purchasing Apple Account before trying to download the app or restore an entitlement.
- In the App Store’s purchased items, find the app and try to redownload it. If it is listed there, the transaction exists and the remaining issue is delivery, compatibility, or in-app recognition.
- If it is not listed, check whether the purchase is hidden and whether you are subject to a device-association condition. Apple’s redownload-apps guidance covers those cases.
Apple also notes that an app may not be available on every Apple device. A purchase made for one platform does not guarantee that the developer supplies a compatible version for every other iPhone, iPad, Mac or other Apple platform. In that situation, the absent app is a compatibility or availability limitation, not proof that the transaction vanished.
4. Restore an in-app purchase from inside the app
For an eligible non-consumable purchase, restoration is initiated by the app—not from the App Store’s download button.

- Open the app in which the purchase was made.
- Look for Restore Purchases or similar wording in the in-app store, main menu, Settings or Options screen. The exact location is chosen by the developer.
- Tap the restore control and authenticate with the Apple Account that made the purchase if the app requests it.
- Allow the app to finish checking Apple’s transaction record, then revisit the feature or subscription screen.
Restore can recover a permanent paid feature and, in some apps, a subscription entitlement. It cannot bring back consumables such as already-spent coins, lives or hints. A reinstall is therefore not a substitute for the restore command, and repeatedly buying the same item can create a second charge without fixing the first entitlement.
If Apple’s history shows that you were charged but the app still does not provide the purchase after restoration, contact the app developer. The developer controls the app’s entitlement check and is the appropriate party to repair an app-side delivery failure. Apple also provides a problem-reporting route through reportaproblem.apple.com.
5. Check the subscription in Apple Account settings
On iPhone, Apple’s current iOS 26 guide places subscription management at Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions. The guide is available at Apple’s iPhone purchase and subscription instructions.

- If the subscription is listed as active, Apple recognizes the billing relationship. You can view its plan, change it, cancel it or renew it from that screen.
- If it is not listed, check purchase history and other Apple Accounts before assuming the subscription was canceled or lost.
- If it is active in Settings but the app still shows a locked feature, return to the app and use its Restore Purchases control. Apple’s subscription record and the app’s own account or entitlement record are separate checks.
An active Apple subscription therefore answers only the billing question. It does not guarantee that an app has refreshed its access state. When restoration fails after an active subscription is confirmed, the developer needs to investigate the app’s account or entitlement handling.

A family member’s purchase is not automatically visible to every device. Apple requires the relevant sharing settings, account alignment and an item that is eligible to share.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that Purchase Sharing is turned on for the Family Sharing group.
- Make sure the family member’s device uses the Apple Account that belongs to the group for Media & Purchases, not a different account.
- Verify that the app, subscription or in-app purchase participates in sharing. Some subscriptions are excluded, and in-app purchases from apps that do not participate cannot be shared.
- If the item should be shared but is absent, check whether the purchaser hid it and whether the destination device meets the applicable system requirements.
Apple documents the account-matching and eligibility rules in its guide to missing family-shared apps and content. A family member seeing the app in their own history while another member cannot access it usually indicates a sharing or eligibility issue, not a duplicate purchase requirement.

7. Separate billing problems from missing access
A message such as “billing problem with previous purchase” or “verification required” concerns the Apple Account’s payment status. An unpaid earlier transaction or invalid payment method can block new purchases and may require updated payment information. Follow Apple’s payment guidance at the billing-problem support page.
Billing status and app visibility are different tests:
- Not in purchase history: check other Apple Accounts and the transaction record, then use Apple’s account or billing support.
- In purchase history, but the app or feature is absent: check Media & Purchases, device compatibility, redownloading and the app’s restore control.
- Subscription active, app still locked: restore inside the app and contact its developer if access remains unavailable.
Updating a payment method will not repair an app’s entitlement display, and restoring an in-app purchase will not settle an unpaid previous charge. Use the route that matches the failure.
Who should help when the checks do not work?
Contact the app developer for entitlement and restore failures
Use the developer’s support channel when the transaction is in Apple history, the app is available on the device, and the app still does not unlock a charged non-consumable purchase or subscription after you use Restore Purchases. Include the transaction date and amount, the Apple Account used for the purchase, and a description of what the app displays. Do not send payment credentials.
Contact Apple for account, history and billing issues
Apple Support is the right route when a transaction cannot be found in purchase history, the wrong Apple Account is involved, payment verification is blocking purchases, or the problem concerns Apple’s billing record. Start with the purchase-history and billing links above so the support request is tied to the correct account and charge.
Use Family Sharing support when access is group-based
For a shared item, first confirm Purchase Sharing, the family member’s Media & Purchases account and the item’s shareability. If those conditions are met and the app still cannot see the shared entitlement, provide the family organizer and developer with the affected account details so they can identify whether the failure is sharing configuration or app-side recognition.
