An Android app that will not install is usually being blocked by one of seven things: an unreliable connection, too little free storage, incorrect date or time, pending system updates, a Google Play Store problem, an account or Google Play services problem, or a restriction on that particular app. The fastest safe fix is to identify the pattern first: does the failure affect one app or several, and does it stop while downloading or while installing?
Work through the low-risk checks in order, retrying the installation after each one. If one title fails while other apps install normally, investigate compatibility, country availability, removal from Google Play, or parental controls. If many apps fail, concentrate on the connection, storage, Android settings, Play Store, account, and Play services. Avoid clearing data or resetting the phone until the simpler checks have failed.
Start by identifying exactly what is failing
Before changing settings, note three details: how many apps are affected, the exact message shown by Google Play, and the point at which the process stops. Google provides separate procedures for one-app and multiple-app failures because the likely causes differ.

Write down the exact wording rather than paraphrasing it. “Pending,” “Can’t install,” “Device isn’t compatible,” “Not available in your country,” and “Device is not certified” point to different branches below.

Run the low-risk checks first
These checks do not remove accounts or app data. After each one, retry the same installation so you can tell which change helped.
1. Confirm the connection
- Open a web page or another online service to verify that the phone is actually connected.
- If you are using mobile data, try a reliable Wi-Fi network. Google recommends a strong connection and prefers Wi-Fi when it is available.
- If Wi-Fi is connected but downloads stall, switch briefly to another known-good network or mobile data. If the second connection works, the original network is the likely cause.
- Return to the app’s Play listing and tap Install again.
A connection can be good enough for browsing but still unstable during a large download. Treat a changing or intermittent connection as a possible cause even when other apps appear online.
2. Check available storage
- Open Settings → Storage. On some phones the equivalent is Settings → Battery and device care → Storage.
- Look at the available, not total, space. Google says that less than 1 GB available can be a sign of low storage and that low storage can stop apps from downloading and installing. This is a troubleshooting threshold, not a universal requirement for every phone or app.
- Use the phone’s built-in storage tools to remove or move content you no longer need. Review large videos, downloaded files, unused apps, and duplicate media before deleting anything.
- Leave enough room for both the downloaded package and Android’s installation work, then retry.
Storage menus and cleanup labels vary by Android version and manufacturer. If the phone reports ample free space and only one app fails, move to the app-specific checks instead of repeatedly deleting files.
3. Install pending Android updates
- Open Settings → System → Software update, or look for System update in Settings search.
- Install any available update while connected to power or with sufficient battery.
- Restart the phone when the update finishes, then try the app again.
A pending update can leave system components out of step with an app’s requirements. The exact menu name depends on the manufacturer.
4. Verify date, time, and time zone
- Open Settings → System → Date & time. Some devices place this under General management.
- Turn on Automatic date and time and Automatic time zone if those controls are offered.
- If automatic values are wrong, temporarily set the correct date, time, and time zone manually, save, and retry.
An incorrect clock can interfere with secure connections and account checks even when the network itself works.
5. Reopen Play Store and restart the phone
- Close Google Play Store from the recent-apps view and open it again.
- If the same request remains stuck, restart the phone.
- After the restart, open Play Store directly, search for the app, and try once more.
Restarting is deliberately early in the sequence: it clears a temporary process problem without removing settings, accounts, or app data.

If only one app will not install
When other apps install normally, a device-wide failure is less likely. Open the app’s Google Play listing and inspect what Google Play says about this device.

Check compatibility and the required Android version
- Open the app’s listing in Google Play.
- Read any message stating that the app is unavailable for your device, and look for the listed required Android version or other compatibility details.
- Compare that requirement with the Android version shown in Settings → About phone → Android version (the wording varies).
Google Play Help states that “Individual app developers, not Google Play, determine app compatibility.” The developer decides which devices and Android versions are supported, so clearing Play Store cache cannot make an incompatible title compatible. If the listing identifies a requirement your phone cannot meet, contact the developer for supported-device information rather than repeatedly retrying.
Check whether the app is available in your Play country
Some apps are distributed only in particular countries or regions. A title may therefore be absent from search, show an availability message, or refuse installation even though the phone and connection are working. Country availability is controlled by the app’s distribution settings; it is not normally fixed by resetting the device.
Consider removal from Google Play
An app can disappear from Google Play or become unavailable for new installations. If the listing cannot be found while other users or the developer indicate that distribution has changed, the problem is availability rather than a damaged phone. Do not infer that a missing listing means your storage or account is broken.
Check parental controls and supervised-device restrictions
Parental controls can hide or block apps based on age ratings or other restrictions. Review the family or parental-control settings associated with the Google account and device. If you later clear Play Store data, remember that Google warns some Play Store settings, including parental controls and password protection, may be removed and need to be configured again.

If the app was installed before and now misbehaves
Google’s one-app guidance includes uninstalling and reinstalling an app. Before uninstalling, determine whether the app stores important information only on the phone. Unsynced local data may not return after removal; the fact that an app can be reinstalled does not establish that every app preserves local files or settings. Back up or export anything the app offers before choosing Uninstall, then install it again from its Play listing.

If several apps fail to install
A multiple-app failure points to a shared service or device condition. Once the connection, storage, updates, date and time, and restart checks are complete, maintain the following escalation order.
Clear Google Play Store cache
- Open Settings → Apps → Google Play Store. You may need See all apps first.
- Choose Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen Play Store and retry the installation.
Cache clearing removes temporary files, not your Google account. It is the least disruptive Play Store maintenance step.
Clear Google Play Store data only if cache clearing fails
- Return to Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Storage & cache.
- Choose Clear storage, Clear data, or the equivalent label.
- Open Play Store again and accept its terms or restore settings if prompted.
- Recheck parental controls and password-protection settings, because Google notes that clearing Play Store data may remove them.
- Retry the app installation.
This step resets Play Store’s local state. It does not turn an unavailable or incompatible app into an installable one, and it should follow—not precede—the basic checks.

If several apps still fail, Google’s advanced guidance includes removing and adding the Google Account again.
- Back up information that is stored on the device or waiting to sync.
- Open Settings → Passwords & accounts, Accounts, or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
- Select the affected Google Account and choose Remove account.
- Restart if the phone requests it, then return to the same account screen and choose Add account → Google.
- Complete sign-in and allow synchronization to finish before retrying Play Store.
Removing an account removes some account information from that device. It is not a casual first fix, particularly on a phone containing unsynchronized data.
Clear Google Play services data only as a late escalation
Google Play services is different from the Play Store app. Clearing its data can have broader effects. Google warns that this may remove saved information such as passwords, transit cards, COVID cards, and virtual payment cards; require payment methods to be authenticated again; and require you to sign in again on devices.

- Confirm that the earlier checks, Play Store cache and data reset, and account re-add have failed.
- Back up or record information that may need to be restored, including payment and transit credentials.
- Open Settings → Apps → Google Play services → Storage & cache.
- Use the data-clearing option only if you understand the resulting sign-ins and reauthentication.
- Restart, sign in where requested, and test Play Store.
Do not confuse this operation with clearing Play Store cache. The two apps have different roles and different consequences when their data is removed.

Google also describes uninstalling Play Store updates and then updating the app again. On many phones, the route is Settings → Apps → Google Play Store, open the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall updates. The exact label and permission vary by manufacturer.
- Use the Play Store app-information screen to remove its updates if that option is available.
- Open Play Store and let it load.
- In Play Store, open your profile picture, choose Settings → About, and select Update Play Store if offered.
- Retry the installation after the update completes.
If your phone does not show these controls, do not force the procedure; use the equivalent option documented for that manufacturer.

“Device is not certified” is a device-status problem, not an ordinary Play Store cache problem. Check the status in Google Play Store under your profile picture, Settings → About → Play Protect certification (the wording can differ).
Certification is not the same as Play Protect scanning
Play Protect certification verifies that the device meets Google’s compatibility requirements. Play Protect’s separate malware-protection feature checks apps for harmful behavior. Turning off the scanning feature does not repair certification. Google states: “Turning off Google Play Protect will not fix a ‘Device is not certified’ issue.”

Common certification causes
Google lists an unlocked bootloader, a modified Android operating system, and a rooted device among common reasons a phone may fail certification. Those conditions can affect Google services even when the hardware itself works. Use the device manufacturer’s instructions for restoring supported software; avoid improvised flashing steps that could erase data or make the phone unusable.

Match the message to the right fix

When to contact the developer or phone manufacturer
Contact the app developer when the failure is app-specific
Use the developer contact information on the app’s Google Play listing when the title is unavailable for your device, has a clear compatibility conflict, is restricted in your country, or fails while other apps install normally. Include the phone model, Android version, exact Play Store message, and whether the failure occurs before or after the download. Do not send passwords or payment details.
Contact the manufacturer for device-wide or certification problems
Manufacturer support is appropriate when multiple apps fail after the official Play Store and account steps, when system-update controls are missing or malfunctioning, or when the phone is rooted, modified, or otherwise reported as uncertified. The manufacturer can provide the supported recovery path for that model; menu names and firmware procedures are not identical across devices.
Factory reset is the last resort
Google’s multiple-app guidance lists a factory reset after the other recommended steps. A reset erases the phone’s local content and settings, so it should never be the opening move for a single failed installation.

- Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator information, app exports, and any files that are not already synchronized.
- Confirm you know the Google Account credentials needed after the reset.
- Open the manufacturer’s reset instructions, commonly found under Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data.
- Reset only when you accept the loss of local data and have a recovery plan.
If the phone remains uncertified or the app remains unavailable after a reset, the reset did not address the underlying restriction. Contact the manufacturer or app developer instead.
How to avoid making the problem worse
- Do not repeatedly tap Install while the connection is dropping; stabilize the network first.
- Do not treat “less than 1 GB free” as a precise requirement for every app. It is Google’s possible low-space indicator, not a universal guarantee.
- Do not clear Google Play services data early. Its impact is broader than clearing Play Store cache.
- Do not uninstall an app containing unsynced local data without checking its backup or export options.
- Do not disable Play Protect expecting an uncertified-device message to disappear.
- Do not factory-reset a phone before backing up data and confirming the account credentials needed to set it up again.
Bottom line
Separate the problem into one app versus many and download failure versus installation failure. For most cases, verify the connection, free storage, Android updates, date and time, then restart and retry. A single-app failure usually requires checking compatibility, country availability, listing status, or parental controls. A multi-app failure justifies Play Store cache and data maintenance, followed cautiously by account or Google Play services steps. Certification errors require a supported device-software path, not a Play Protect toggle. Escalate to the developer or manufacturer before considering a destructive reset.
