Amazon says it uses personal information to recommend products and services, identify preferences, and personalize the Amazon experience. Searches, product views, cart activity, and purchases are among the activity described in its Privacy Notice, so your recommendations may reflect more than what you have bought. Amazon does not publish the exact formula or explain how much weight it gives any individual action.
What Amazon means by using your shopping history
“Shopping history” can sound as though recommendations are driven only by past orders. Amazon’s Privacy Notice describes a broader set of activity it may collect, including searches, products and content viewed, items added to or removed from a cart, orders, and purchase or content-use history. Amazon says it uses personal information to recommend features, products, and services that might interest customers, identify preferences, and personalize their experience.
That distinction helps explain why an item you only looked at—or considered and then removed from your cart—might be relevant to a recommendation. Those actions appear among the kinds of information Amazon describes collecting. However, the notice does not say that every listed action is used for every recommendation, or that each has the same influence. It establishes a broad personalization purpose, not a complete technical account of how a particular product was selected for you.
A recommendation is therefore best understood as a personalized suggestion informed by activity Amazon says it may collect, rather than as a simple list of things you have purchased. A product appearing in the list does not, by itself, tell you which action prompted it.

Why different kinds of activity can matter
Different actions can communicate different kinds of interest. A search indicates that you looked for a category or product; a product view shows that you opened its page; a cart action records that you considered an item enough to add or remove it; and an order records a purchase. Amazon’s public explanation groups these within a wider picture of collected information, but does not describe the interpretation assigned to each action.
For example, someone who searches for a camera, views several models, and purchases one might see recommendations related to cameras or products they browsed. That is a reasonable illustration of how browsing and purchase activity could inform personalization; it is not a claim that Amazon uses a specific rule, gives these actions particular weights, or will necessarily show those products. Amazon does not disclose a shopper-by-shopper explanation of the signals behind an individual recommendation.
History can also help make a large catalogue more relevant to an individual. A suggestion based on prior activity is intended to reflect possible interest, not to certify that a product is the best choice, that it is suitable for every need, or that the customer still wants it. A recommendation can be useful, irrelevant, or outdated; its presence does not establish why it appeared.
What Amazon does—and does not—disclose about the algorithm
Amazon’s consumer-facing Privacy Notice explains the purpose of personalization and gives examples of information it collects. It does not disclose a production formula for the recommendations on Amazon.com. In particular, it does not state how a product view compares with a purchase, how long a past action may affect recommendations, or which combination of activity explains a specific suggestion.
That means several common assumptions go beyond what the notice establishes. A recommendation should not be treated as proof that Amazon saw a purchase specifically, nor should one assume that removing an item from a cart or editing a history entry will produce a particular change. The public explanation supports the narrower point that a range of activity may inform personalization, while leaving the individual calculation unspecified.

What Amazon Personalize can tell you
Amazon Web Services offers a developer service called Amazon Personalize. Its technical documentation describes recommendation recipes that can calculate item scores from interaction data and item metadata. For certain supported uses, developers can send real-time events; how and when new information affects recommendations depends on the recipe and its update behavior.
This is an example of recommendation technology Amazon makes available to developers, not a disclosure of the system behind Amazon.com’s consumer storefront. The AWS documentation does not establish that Amazon’s retail site uses the same recipe, score, data handling, or update interval. It can illustrate that recommendation systems may combine interaction data and information about items, but it cannot answer which signals Amazon’s store used to select a particular product for you.
The distinction matters when interpreting technical terms such as “score” or “real time.” In the AWS service, those details relate to particular recipes and developer use cases: interaction data and item metadata can contribute to item scores, and real-time events are available for some supported uses. Other update behavior depends on training and the recipe. Those capabilities should not be read as a guarantee that a shopper’s Amazon.com recommendations change immediately after an action, or that the store uses a particular AWS configuration.
How to change recommendations or the history behind them
Amazon identifies several account controls. They address related but distinct things: recommendation inputs for an individual item, the browsing history you can edit, and whether browsing activity is linked to your signed-in account. Use the control that matches what you want to change.

Exclude one item from recommendations
- Open Amazon’s “Improve Your Recommendations” controls.
- Find the relevant item and switch off “Use this item for recommendations.”
This is the targeted choice when you want to tell Amazon not to use a particular item for recommendations. The control is item-specific; Amazon’s description does not say that it deletes every record of the item or changes every other form of personalization.

Edit your browsing history
- Open “Your Browsing History.”
- Review the browsing history and edit it using the available controls.
Amazon lists browsing-history editing separately from the recommendation toggle. Treat them as separate controls: one is described as managing recorded browsing history, while the other is explicitly for an item’s use in recommendations. The Privacy Notice does not specify every resulting change to recommendations after a history edit.

Amazon says signing out and blocking cookies can let you browse without linking browsing history to your account. This is not a frictionless or universal way to stop all personalization across devices and services: the statement is about browsing its websites without account linkage. Amazon also warns that rejecting cookies can interfere with essential store functions, including using a cart, checkout, or services that require sign-in.
If you rely on those features, cookie blocking can make the shopping experience less functional. The account controls above are more targeted when your goal is to manage a particular recommendation input or edit recorded browsing history.
Choose the control by its scope
If one product is the problem, the item-level recommendation toggle is the most targeted option. If you want to review or edit activity recorded as browsing history, use “Your Browsing History.” If your aim is to browse Amazon’s websites without connecting that browsing history to your account, Amazon describes signing out and blocking cookies—but that choice has the broadest effect on site convenience. It can interfere with the cart, checkout, and features that require signing in.
These controls should not be treated as interchangeable privacy switches. Amazon describes the item toggle as controlling an item’s use for recommendations, browsing-history editing as a way to manage that history, and sign-out plus cookie blocking as a way to avoid linking browsing history to an account. The notice does not promise that any one option removes all information Amazon may hold, stops every kind of personalization, or produces a predictable change to every recommendation.

Store recommendations are not the same as ad personalization
A product suggestion in Amazon’s store and an advertisement are different kinds of personalization. Amazon’s Privacy Notice says it does not share specific shopping actions such as purchases, product views, or searches with advertising companies, while also describing sharing of advertising identifiers and estimates of ad value. That distinction does not mean the store has no access to activity for its own stated personalization purposes; it means ad-related information practices should not be treated as the explanation for every store recommendation.
If you are trying to understand why a product appears on an Amazon shopping page, the relevant public explanation is the notice’s account of personal information and store personalization. An ad shown elsewhere is a separate question, and the appearance of an ad does not reveal which specific Amazon shopping action, if any, influenced it.
How to interpret an unexpected recommendation
If a suggestion seems unrelated to what you want, the public information available to customers may not identify its cause. Amazon’s broad list includes searches, views, cart activity, orders, and other history, but it does not expose a per-item explanation or a ranking breakdown. Rather than infer a specific trigger, use the available controls according to your goal: exclude a particular item from recommendations, edit your browsing history, or change how you browse while signed out.
These options have different scope. The item toggle is narrow and recommendation-focused; browsing-history editing concerns recorded history; signing out and blocking cookies addresses account linkage for browsing but may impair cart, checkout, and sign-in features. Choosing among them depends on whether you want to address one item, the history you can edit, or account-linked browsing more generally.
