AM radio can reach farther after sunset, yet a particular station may sound less clear or steady. The reason is not that AM signals simply weaken at night: the ionosphere absorbs less of their energy, allowing more distant stations to arrive by skywave and compete with local ones. That longer reach can also make a station fade as its skywave combines with its ground wave.
What changes in AM reception after sunset?
AM signals can travel to a receiver by two main paths. A ground wave follows the Earth’s surface. A skywave travels upward and is returned toward Earth by the ionosphere. During the day, ground-wave reception is generally the more important path for medium-frequency AM over distance. After sunset, skywave contributes more, so distant stations that were difficult or impossible to hear may appear on the dial.
This is why “worse” depends on what you want to hear. Nighttime conditions can help you receive a distant station, but make a particular local station less intelligible or stable.
Why does more skywave get through at night?
Daylight creates an absorbing lower region
Solar radiation creates charged particles in the ionosphere. NOAA describes the ionospheric regions as denser during the day and says the D layer essentially disappears at night. As medium-frequency AM energy passes through the daytime D region, collisions with electrons absorb some of it. NOAA’s introductory explanation describes the D layer as absorbing AM signals, which helps limit interference between stations.

After sunset, the absorption drops
Without the Sun’s daytime ionization, the D region’s ionization and absorption fall. More AM energy can then pass through to higher ionospheric regions, including the E region, and return toward Earth. NOAA’s lesson puts it simply: “At night, the D-Layer disappears, and the transmitted signal can then bounce off the ionosphere and return back to the Earth.” The “bounce” is a useful shorthand; more technically, the ionosphere refracts and returns the signal rather than acting like a perfect mirror.

Why can a local station sound worse?
Distant stations can share its frequency
Once nighttime skywave carries signals over greater distances, stations on the same frequency—or close enough to interfere—can reach your radio together. The result may be a competing voice, a station that fades in and out, or difficulty separating one broadcast from another. The FCC’s technical rationale for AM allocation recognizes that nighttime skywave can cause interference hundreds or thousands of miles away, which is why day and night propagation matter in allocation decisions. Your receiver may get both the station’s ground wave and its skywave. These signals add together: depending on their relative strength and timing, they can reinforce each other or partially cancel. Where the two paths are comparable, that interaction can cause fading, distortion, or a sudden drop in the received signal even though the transmitter is operating normally. Do stations change their power at night?
Some broadcasters reduce power or stop transmitting at sunset to limit interference; others operate through the night, including high-power clear-channel stations. There is no single schedule or power change that applies to every AM station. NOAA’s educational lesson describes these differing practices, while the FCC report provides regulatory context. For a particular station’s current hours or power, check that station’s own information or current FCC records rather than assuming a general nighttime rule.

A portable AM radio is enough for a simple listening activity; no special equipment is required.

- Before sunset, tune across the AM band and note a few stations you can identify reliably.
- After sunset, tune through the same frequencies again. Listen for stations that were not audible earlier and for competition on frequencies you noted.
- Write down call signs, station locations if announced, signal quality, fading, and static. Compare what changed between the two listening sessions.
This activity follows NOAA’s AM in the PM lesson. The effect is a change in propagation, not a guarantee that every distant station will come in clearly.
