AI is increasing demand for high-capacity hard drives because it creates, retains, replicates and revisits far more data than many earlier applications. Training corpora, historical records, generated media, telemetry and evaluation logs may not need the lowest possible latency forever, but they still have to remain available. Hard disk drives (HDDs) provide the mass-capacity tier for that data in cloud and enterprise environments, while solid-state drives (SSDs) and other faster media handle latency-sensitive processing.

The result is not an “HDD instead of SSD” transition. It is a larger, more layered storage system in which capacity, cost, energy, performance and qualification status determine where each dataset belongs.

How AI turns data growth into HDD demand

AI workloads expand storage requirements in several linked stages. A model may begin with large training datasets, then generate checkpoints, feature stores, evaluation results and detailed logs. Production systems add user prompts, responses, telemetry, safety records and refreshed training material. Generated images, audio, video and synthetic data can be retained for later selection or retraining. Even when only a fraction of that information is read frequently, deleting it may remove useful history or make future analysis more expensive.

Seagate’s FY2026 filing describes AI-enhanced applications as accelerating data creation and increasing reliance on historical data for advanced reasoning. The same filing identifies longer retention, greater replication, cloud expansion and distributed computing as trends supporting scalable mass-capacity storage. That is a manufacturer’s account of its market, not an independent measurement of every AI deployment, but it explains the storage mechanism clearly.

Training data is only the beginning

During active training and inference, the fastest storage tier is valuable because it can reduce wait time for data reads and writes. Once a dataset, model checkpoint or log is accessed less often, the cost of keeping many copies can matter more than peak latency. Operators can move older or less frequently used objects to high-capacity HDD pools while preserving policy-based access for audits, retraining and investigations.

Retention and replication multiply capacity

Organizations commonly keep multiple copies across availability zones, regions or backup systems. A single dataset therefore represents more than its original byte count. Longer retention periods and additional replicas increase the number of exabytes that must be installed, powered and managed. AI can intensify those policies because model behavior, data lineage and safety decisions may need to be reconstructed months later.

Distributed and edge data add more locations

AI processing is increasingly distributed between central cloud facilities, enterprise sites and locations where data is produced. Seagate separately describes edge and IoT storage for data created, processed and stored close to its source, including network-attached storage (NAS) and backup uses. Video feeds, industrial sensors and retail or medical systems can accumulate local data before selected information is moved to a central platform. Each site may need a capacity tier even when only a subset of its data is sent elsewhere.

What role high-capacity HDDs play in a storage architecture

HDDs are primarily a capacity-density and economics choice. They offer large amounts of persistent storage in a relatively small number of devices and are well suited to sequential or object-oriented data access, backup repositories, archives and “warm” datasets that are important but not constantly read. SSDs remain the usual choice for the lowest-latency paths, such as active databases, feature serving and portions of model training. The boundary is workload-specific rather than absolute.

A practical tiering model

Storage tier Typical AI-related role Primary decision criteria
High-performance SSD or equivalent Active training inputs, metadata, indexes, hot feature data and latency-sensitive inference paths Latency, I/O operations, throughput and predictable response time
High-capacity nearline HDD Large training repositories, checkpoints, data lakes, backup copies and frequently recoverable historical data Capacity density, cost at scale, throughput for the access pattern and energy per stored capacity
Archive or cold-storage tier Long-retention logs, older snapshots, compliance records and infrequently revisited generated content Retention policy, retrieval time, durability, replication and total operating cost
Edge or NAS HDD Local sensor, video and business data awaiting analysis, backup or transfer Local capacity, resilience, manageability and connectivity to central systems

Large operators may combine these tiers in one workflow. Data can land on fast media, move to nearline HDD after a period of inactivity and remain on an archive tier under a longer policy. Automated lifecycle rules are important because manually deciding where billions of objects belong does not scale.

What the reported shipment and revenue figures show

Recent company disclosures indicate strong activity in nearline and mass-capacity HDDs, but they do not isolate the portion caused solely by AI.

Figure What it measures How to interpret it
595 exabytes shipped in FY2025 Seagate-reported HDD storage shipped; the company reported 49% growth in HDD volume shipments A measure of the vendor’s shipment volume, not a global AI-only demand statistic
84% of Seagate’s exabytes to cloud and edge data-center demand from nearline products Product mix reported by Seagate for FY2025 Shows the importance of nearline capacity in those deployments; it does not identify the workloads using each drive
23% HDD exabyte shipment CAGR, 2024–2028 Western Digital projection published in 2025 A forward-looking forecast based on internal estimates and assumptions, not an independently verified result
Approximately 34% increase in Seagate FY2026 revenue, or $3.1 billion Seagate-reported financial result, attributed primarily to higher nearline exabytes shipped and favorable pricing actions Company revenue performance, not an AI-specific demand measure

Western Digital connected its 2025 projection to text-to-image and text-to-video generation and demand for data lakes. Those examples explain why the company expects exabyte growth, but the forecast remains a company estimate. Likewise, Seagate CEO Dave Mosley said at the company’s May 22, 2025 Investor and Analyst Event: “Technology innovation and AI are fueling exponential data growth and driving demand for the hard drive storage industry.” This is a company-position statement rather than an independent market finding.

How drive capacity is increasing

Higher capacity per drive reduces the number of enclosures, slots, controllers and floor-space resources required for a given dataset. It can also reduce the number of copies that must be spread across equipment, although redundancy and failure-domain policies still govern the final design.

Seagate’s announced products

Seagate’s FY2026 filing describes a data-center HDD portfolio with capacities up to 44TB. The company separately announced Mozaic 4+ drives of up to 44TB shipping in volume to two hyperscale cloud providers. Those products and shipment statements are aimed at large data-center customers; they should not be interpreted as ordinary consumer retail availability.

Western Digital’s 40TB qualification path

Western Digital said its 40TB UltraSMR ePMR HDD was in qualification with two hyperscale customers and that volume production was planned for the second half of 2026. “In qualification” means customers are evaluating the drive for their systems; it is different from broad volume shipment. The second-half-2026 production date is a plan stated in the announcement, not independently confirmed delivery.

The technology claims behind the roadmaps

Western Digital’s announcements discuss ePMR, UltraSMR and HAMR technology paths, along with capacity targets, bandwidth, I/O and power optimization. Seagate’s Mozaic 4+ material emphasizes capacity per rack, capacity per watt, footprint and energy. These are vendor product and roadmap claims. They are useful for understanding design direction, but they are not neutral, head-to-head benchmark results.

How to evaluate HDDs for an AI storage deployment

1. Start with the access pattern

Measure how often data is read, whether reads are sequential or random, the required throughput, and the acceptable recovery time. A large dataset used continuously by training jobs may need SSD acceleration, caching or parallel HDD layouts. A completed checkpoint repository or historical log store may fit nearline HDDs well.

2. Calculate usable capacity, not raw drive capacity

Raw capacity must be adjusted for erasure coding, mirroring, hot spares, filesystem overhead and reserved free space. Replication across sites can multiply the result again. Compare systems on usable petabytes or exabytes delivered to applications, not just the label on an individual drive.

3. Compare economics at deployment scale

Acquisition cost is only one part of the decision. Include enclosures, controllers, networking, replacement inventory, labor, migration, electricity, cooling and the cost of maintaining copies. A vendor’s total-cost or efficiency example should remain attributed to that vendor and should not be treated as independent validation.

4. Check energy in the intended environment

Capacity per watt can improve when fewer drives hold the same dataset, but actual results depend on workload, duty cycle, enclosure design, airflow, rebuild activity and replication. Request measurements for the proposed configuration rather than assuming a product example generalizes to every rack or facility.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

5. Confirm qualification and support status

Ask whether a model is shipping in volume, available only to selected hyperscale customers, in customer qualification or still a future target. Validate firmware support, host-bus compatibility, enclosure certification, warranty terms and replacement logistics before committing a production cluster.

6. Design for failures and rebuilds

High-capacity drives reduce device count, but each device contains more data that may need reconstruction after a failure. Choose an erasure-coding or mirroring scheme, rebuild limits and spare policy that meet the required durability and recovery-time objectives. Test degraded-mode performance and recovery behavior with representative data.

Why this trend does not mean HDDs replace SSDs

AI systems have different performance phases. Ingest, preprocessing, random metadata access and low-latency inference can be constrained by storage response time. A high-capacity HDD pool may provide adequate throughput for large sequential reads or object retrieval while still being too slow for a latency-critical index. Tiering lets operators reserve expensive fast media for the data paths that benefit from it and use HDDs for the larger capacity requirement.

The right comparison is therefore not “HDD or SSD?” but “which proportion of this dataset needs which service level?” Storage policies can move data between tiers as its temperature changes, while caches and parallelism can improve access to HDD-resident objects without turning every byte into premium storage.

That qualification matters when planning budgets. AI may be a major contributor to data growth, yet HDD demand also includes conventional cloud services, backups, enterprise archives, surveillance, analytics and other workloads. Treat AI-related capacity projections as scenarios to test against your own retention, replication and performance measurements.

A decision checklist for infrastructure teams

  • Inventory training data, checkpoints, generated media, logs and backups by access frequency and retention period.
  • Model replicas, erasure coding, regional copies and expected annual data growth.
  • Separate latency-sensitive working sets from capacity-oriented repositories.
  • Compare usable capacity per rack, facility footprint and watt under the proposed configuration.
  • Validate sequential throughput, random I/O, rebuild time and degraded-mode behavior.
  • Confirm whether each candidate drive is in volume shipment, customer qualification or a future roadmap stage.
  • Test lifecycle policies that move inactive data from fast storage to HDD and back when needed.
  • Revisit assumptions as model sizes, media formats, retention rules and cloud architecture change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are high-capacity HDDs suitable for every AI workload?

No. They are most useful for large, persistent datasets, backups, archives and other capacity-oriented tiers. Latency-sensitive training and inference paths may require SSDs or caching.

Does a 44TB drive mean that capacity is available to consumers?

No. The cited 44TB products are described for data-center use, including volume shipments to hyperscale customers. Consumer availability, compatibility and pricing are not established by those announcements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the projected 23% HDD growth an independently verified forecast?

No. It is Western Digital’s 2025 projection for 2024–2028, based on internal estimates and forward-looking assumptions.

The Bottom Line

AI is driving HDD demand mainly by expanding the amount of data organizations must retain, replicate and revisit. High-capacity nearline drives provide the mass-storage layer for that growth, while faster media continue to serve performance-critical work. The sound deployment choice depends on access pattern, usable capacity, energy, total cost, resilience and whether a drive is actually shipping—not on AI demand alone.
