AI-generated pages usually look bad on phones for the same reasons hand-written pages do: the browser is using an unsuitable layout viewport, an element is wider than the available space, or the CSS has no rule for adapting when the space narrows. The reliable fix is diagnostic rather than a blanket patch: verify the viewport declaration, identify the exact overflowing element, replace rigid dimensions with flexible sizing, then add content-driven layout changes and test the result at narrow widths and zoom.
There is no established statistic showing that a particular percentage of AI-generated sites fail on mobile. This guide covers the documented browser, CSS, and accessibility mechanisms that make any responsive page break, plus a workflow for correcting code produced by an AI tool.
What a mobile layout failure actually looks like
“Bad on mobile” can describe several different failures. Distinguishing them prevents you from applying a fix that merely hides the symptom.
| What you see | Likely mechanism | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The entire desktop page appears tiny, with large empty margins. | The browser is laying the page out against a wide virtual viewport and scaling it down. | The document’s viewport meta tag. |
| A horizontal scrollbar appears, or the right edge of a card is cut off. | A fixed width, minimum width, intrinsic image, table, or unbreakable string exceeds the viewport. | The element with the greatest rendered width. |
| Cards or navigation stay in one row and become unusably narrow. | Flex or Grid tracks cannot shrink or wrap, or the items have rigid widths. | Track definitions, item min-width, and wrapping rules. |
| A sidebar overlaps the article or vanishes at one width. | The composition needs a breakpoint, but the media query is not matching or is changing only part of the layout. | Computed styles and the query’s condition. |
| The page looks correct visually, but keyboard focus jumps around. | CSS visual reordering conflicts with DOM order. | Source order and the tab sequence. |
These are normal responsive-web problems. The fact that an AI produced the markup does not establish a separate failure mode or a measured failure rate.

Start with a reproducible diagnosis
Use a browser’s responsive-design tools, then confirm the result on a real phone if available. The first observation matters: is the page scaled, clipped, or genuinely wider than the viewport?
- Set the emulated viewport to a narrow width, such as 320 or 375 CSS pixels, and reload the page.
- Zoom to 100 percent, then repeat the check at a larger text or page zoom. A layout that works only at the default zoom is not robust.
- Use the browser’s element inspector to look for a box extending beyond the right edge. Temporarily apply an outline to suspected elements so the source of the overflow is visible.
- Inspect computed
width,min-width, padding, borders, transforms, and intrinsic content. The overflowing child is usually more useful to fix than the page root.
A temporary rule such as html { outline: 2px solid red; } will not identify the cause by itself. Inspect descendants and compare their scroll width with the viewport. Remove diagnostic styles after the fix.
Check the layout viewport declaration
In the document <head>, use the standard device-width declaration:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
web.dev explains that without viewport configuration, a mobile browser may render the page against a desktop-like virtual width and scale the result down. MDN notes that a virtual viewport around 980 CSS pixels can prevent narrow-screen media queries from activating as intended. The result is often a tiny desktop layout rather than a reflowed mobile layout.
Check that the tag is present once, is inside <head>, and has not been replaced by a restrictive variant. Do not add user-scalable=no or a restrictive maximum-scale merely to make a screenshot look stable. MDN recommends preserving normal user zoom because people who need magnification must be able to enlarge content.
The viewport tag cannot repair a fixed-width card or an oversized image. It only gives responsive CSS an accurate width to work with, so continue with overflow inspection after confirming it.
Find the element that is wider than the screen
Horizontal overflow has a concrete source. Common causes include a container with width: 1200px, a child with min-width: 700px, a table with long columns, an image whose intrinsic dimensions are larger than its parent, an embedded frame, and a long unbroken URL or identifier.

.container {
width: min(100% - 2rem, 72rem);
margin-inline: auto;
}
The subtraction leaves a gutter on narrow screens while the maximum prevents very long lines on wide screens. If a component truly needs a minimum size, decide whether it should wrap, stack, or scroll within its own region; do not let that minimum widen the entire document unintentionally.
Images, video, and embeds
web.dev identifies oversized images as a common source of horizontal scrolling. A general constraint is:
img,
svg,
video,
canvas {
max-width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
max-width: 100% lets media shrink to the available width without enlarging an asset beyond its natural size. Check embedded frames and third-party widgets separately; they may require a responsive wrapper or a documented mobile mode.

Tables and long strings
A data table can be wider than a phone by design. If every column must remain visible, put the table in a component that scrolls horizontally rather than allowing the page itself to scroll:
.table-scroll {
overflow-x: auto;
max-width: 100%;
}
For prose, file names, URLs, and generated identifiers, allow breaking where it is safe:
.breakable {
overflow-wrap: anywhere;
}
Do not apply overflow-x: hidden to body as the first response. It can conceal clipped controls and make the real defect harder to find. Use it only when you have verified that no required content is being cut off.
Replace rigid rows with flexible layout
Responsive design is mostly the interaction of flexible sizing and a small number of conditional rules. Grid is suited to two-dimensional placement; Flexbox is suited to a row or column whose items should shrink, wrap, or distribute space.
Flexbox for navigation and toolbars
Allow items to wrap and allow long flex children to shrink below their content’s preferred width:

.toolbar {
display: flex;
flex-wrap: wrap;
gap: 0.75rem;
}
.toolbar__label,
.toolbar__field {
min-width: 0;
}
When a flex child contains a long heading or input, min-width: 0 is often the missing rule: the default minimum can be based on the child’s content and prevent the row from shrinking. Give controls a usable width rather than forcing every item to stay on one line.
Grid for cards and page columns
A card collection can start as one column and add columns when there is room:
.cards {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fit, minmax(min(100%, 16rem), 1fr));
gap: 1rem;
}
The min(100%, 16rem) guard prevents a track’s minimum from exceeding a very narrow container. For a page with a main region and a sidebar, use a flexible track and a breakpoint when the composition genuinely needs to stack:

display: grid;
grid-template-columns: minmax(0, 1fr) 18rem;
gap: 2rem;
}
@media (max-width: 52rem) {
.layout {
grid-template-columns: 1fr;
}
}
minmax(0, 1fr) prevents a long child from imposing an unintended minimum on the main track. The breakpoint changes the relationship between the regions; it is not a patch for an individual overflowing image.
Choose breakpoints from the content, not a phone model
Resize the layout until the content itself signals that a change is needed: navigation no longer fits, cards become too narrow to read, a form label collides with its control, or line lengths become uncomfortable. Then place a media query near that threshold. MDN describes media queries in terms of viewport dimensions and device features, but a named device is a poor design specification because phones and browser settings vary.
A mobile-first stylesheet can be simple normal flow plus enhancements:
/* Narrow presentation: normal flow is the default. */
.page {
display: block;
}
.nav-list {
display: grid;
gap: 0.5rem;
}
@media (min-width: 48rem) {
.page {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: minmax(0, 1fr) 18rem;
gap: 2rem;
}
.nav-list {
display: flex;
flex-wrap: wrap;
}
}
This approach avoids a long list of device-specific exceptions. Add another breakpoint only when the content requires a distinct arrangement, not because a framework happens to define one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep visual order, source order, and keyboard order aligned
Grid placement and Flexbox’s order property can move boxes without moving them in the HTML. W3C/WAI warns that this can disconnect the visual presentation from keyboard navigation and the source-code reading sequence.

Write the DOM in the intended logical order first: usually the page heading, primary content, supporting content, and then secondary actions. Use Grid areas or a breakpoint to place those regions without contradicting that sequence. After every reordering change, press Tab from the top of the page and verify that focus follows the visible and reading order. Screen-reader users should encounter headings, controls, and related content in the same meaningful sequence.
A visually attractive mobile design is not a successful fix if a keyboard user must jump from a footer control back to a visually earlier heading. If two regions have genuinely different priority on mobile, reconsider the information architecture instead of relying on a chain of order values.
Use media queries for meaningful composition changes
Media queries are appropriate when a layout should change mode: a sidebar moves below the article, a horizontal navigation becomes a wrapped or collapsed control, or a multi-column form becomes one column. They are not a substitute for flexible dimensions.
When a query appears not to work, check these failure modes:
- The viewport meta tag is missing, so the browser is evaluating the query against a wide virtual viewport.
- The query is syntactically invalid or is overridden later by a more specific selector.
- The stylesheet is not loaded, is cached, or is scoped differently from the generated markup.
- The query changes a parent, but a child’s fixed width or minimum width still causes overflow.
- The breakpoint is below the width at which the content actually stops fitting, so the rule never solves the visible problem.
Inspect the element’s computed styles at the exact width where the problem occurs. DevTools will show which declaration wins and whether the media query is active.
A practical repair sequence
- Reproduce: Open responsive-design tools, choose a narrow width, reload, and classify the failure as scaling, clipping, or horizontal scrolling.
- Verify the viewport: Confirm
width=device-width, initial-scale=1in the document head and remove restrictive zoom settings. - Locate the source: Inspect the widest descendant and record its computed width, minimum width, padding, border, transform, and intrinsic content.
- Remove unnecessary rigidity: Replace fixed page widths, add fluid container sizing, constrain media with
max-width: 100%, and permit safe text breaks. - Make groups adaptable: Add Flexbox wrapping or Grid tracks that can shrink. Use
min-width: 0on shrinkable flex or grid children. - Change composition only when needed: Add a content-driven media query for stacking, navigation changes, or another deliberate mode switch.
- Check order: Test source order, visual order, and keyboard focus after any Grid placement or Flexbox ordering change.
- Re-test: Check narrow, intermediate, and wide widths, page zoom, text zoom where available, orientation changes, and a real phone if possible.
Match the fix to the symptom
| Situation | Preferred change | Use cautiously |
|---|---|---|
| A page is uniformly tiny on a phone. | Correct the viewport declaration. | Changing font sizes before fixing the layout viewport. |
| One image or video causes overflow. | Constrain that media to its containing block and preserve its aspect ratio. | Hiding overflow on the whole document. |
| A card row cannot fit. | Use wrapping Flexbox or responsive Grid tracks. | Adding many device-specific breakpoints. |
| A sidebar and article need different mobile placement. | Use a breakpoint that stacks the regions while retaining logical source order. | Reordering with conflicting order values. |
| A table contains necessary wide data. | Provide a clearly bounded, horizontally scrollable table region. | Compressing text until the data is unreadable. |
The right choice depends on what the content is allowed to do: shrink, wrap, stack, scroll inside a component, or remain in columns. No single CSS technique is universally best.

- Pixel widths on outer containers, sections, or navigation rows.
min-widthvalues that are larger than the component’s narrowest usable size.- Images, SVGs, canvases, and frames without a max-width constraint.
- Flex children that lack
min-width: 0when their content can be long. - Grid tracks written as fixed pixels rather than shrinkable fractions or bounded minimums.
- Repeated media queries for named devices instead of a breakpoint justified by content.
- Global
overflow-x: hiddenadded without locating the overflowing element. - Visual reordering that changes the intended reading or focus sequence.
Regenerate only the faulty component when possible. A wholesale rewrite can reintroduce a corrected problem elsewhere and makes it harder to tell which change fixed the overflow.
Check reflow and accessibility at 320 CSS pixels
W3C/WAI Technique C32 states: “The objective of this technique is to be able to present content without introducing a horizontal scroll bar at a width equivalent to 320 CSS pixels, or a vertical scroll bar at a height equivalent to 256 CSS pixels for text intended to scroll horizontally.” Treat this as an accessibility-oriented check, not a promise that every interface or content type has identical requirements. A table, map, code sample, or other two-dimensional content may need a bounded scrolling region.
At the narrow test width, confirm that headings, paragraphs, buttons, form fields, and error messages remain available without forcing page-level horizontal scrolling. Increase zoom and text size to expose components that only fit because text is unusually small. Ensure focus indicators remain visible and that sticky or fixed elements do not cover the content they are meant to expose.
W3C techniques are examples of ways to meet WCAG, not the only route to conformance. Use the underlying objective—readable, operable content that reflows appropriately—as the test.
Common anti-fixes and their consequences
Making everything smaller
Reducing every font, padding, and control dimension may remove a scrollbar while making the page harder to read and operate. Fix the element that exceeds the available width instead.
Adding a breakpoint for every device
Device-name breakpoints multiply exceptions and still miss intermediate widths. Let flexible sizing handle continuous changes and reserve queries for genuine composition changes.
Hiding overflow globally
Global clipping can hide a submit button, a focus ring, or the edge of a card. It also leaves the underlying width defect in place. Scope scrolling to content that is intentionally wide.

Restrictive viewport settings trade a cosmetic result for an accessibility failure. Preserve the browser’s normal zoom behavior.
Fixing only the screenshot
A page can look correct at one emulated width while failing at an intermediate width, with keyboard navigation, or after text zoom. Test a range and inspect behavior, not just one image.
When the layout still fails
If the overflow remains after the obvious fixes, isolate the page. Remove sections or components until the scrollbar disappears, then restore the last removed section and inspect its children. Check transforms such as translateX, absolutely positioned decorations, negative margins, and third-party widgets; these can extend beyond the normal flow even when their parent appears flexible.
For a media query that never activates, verify the stylesheet’s load status, selector specificity, query syntax, and viewport width in DevTools. For a layout that fails only after content is loaded, inspect the final rendered dimensions rather than the initial HTML. Generated pages often insert a long title, translated text, or an image after load, exposing an otherwise hidden minimum width.
Once the page passes narrow and intermediate widths, repeat the check whenever an AI tool regenerates markup or CSS. Responsive behavior is a property of the complete DOM, styles, and content—not of a single prompt or component in isolation.
