An AMD Radeon card can work normally for your monitor and still be unavailable to an AI application. Display detection, ROCm compute support, framework enumeration, and application support are separate checks. The fix is therefore to identify your exact hardware and software combination, verify compatibility at each layer, and correct the first layer that fails.
This guide covers Linux and Windows systems using AMD’s ROCm stack, with specific notes for the ROCm Runfile Installer. Your exact GPU model, operating-system release, driver, ROCm version, framework, application version, and error message determine which steps apply.
What “AMD GPU not detected” can mean
The message may describe several different conditions:
- The operating system cannot see the card. This is a hardware, firmware, driver, or basic operating-system problem.
- The operating system sees it, but the compute runtime cannot use it. The installed driver, ROCm release, GPU architecture, permissions, or dependencies may be wrong.
- ROCm works, but the framework cannot enumerate the GPU. The framework build may lack AMD support, or its version may not match the installed runtime.
- The framework sees it, but the AI application does not. The application may support only selected GPUs, operating systems, framework versions, or execution backends.
- The application detects it but silently uses the CPU. A backend may be disabled, a device-selection setting may point to CPU, or an isolated environment may hide the device.
A working display driver proves only that the card can provide graphics output. It does not prove that your particular AI application supports the card through its compute stack.

Start by recording the complete setup
Before changing drivers or reinstalling ROCm, write down the information below. A compatibility decision without all of these details is guesswork.

Keep the original error text rather than paraphrasing it. Also note whether the application is running natively, in a virtual machine, inside a container, or through a compatibility layer; those environments can change GPU access. Record which account launches it, because permissions for an interactive user do not automatically apply to a service or container account.
Read compatibility as a complete match
Compatibility is not a single “AMD supported” label. Compare every item in the chain:

Think of the result as a chain: GPU plus operating system plus driver plus ROCm plus framework plus application. Every link must be supported. A failure at any earlier link makes later settings irrelevant.
Check the current compatibility matrix first
AMD’s ROCm 10.1.0 compatibility matrix, dated August 26, 2026, covers Linux and Windows. Use the matrix that matches the ROCm release you intend to run, and compare the exact GPU, operating-system release, and driver combination. A model listed for one ROCm release is not automatically supported by every older or newer release.
The matrix establishes ROCm compatibility, not universal application compatibility. After checking AMD’s matrix, read the target application’s official requirements for its supported operating systems, AMD backend, framework version, and GPU models. An application may support only a subset of ROCm-supported hardware.
How to interpret a failed match
- GPU absent from the matrix: Do not assume that installing a different package will make it supported. Look for an application-specific alternative or a documented support statement.
- GPU listed, operating system not listed: The combination is unsupported even if the same card works on another system.
- GPU and operating system listed, driver or ROCm version mismatched: Install the release-matched components rather than mixing commands from different releases.
- Everything listed but the application still fails: Continue to framework and application checks; the matrix does not certify third-party software.
Save the matrix version you consulted. AMD updates compatibility details as releases change, so a result obtained from a different ROCm release may not apply to the one installed on your machine.

- Operating system: Confirm that the OS identifies the AMD card.
- AMD compute runtime: Confirm that the installed driver and ROCm components can access it.
- Framework: Confirm that the framework enumerates an AMD device.
- AI application: Confirm that the application selects the AMD backend rather than falling back to CPU.
This sequence separates a system problem from an application-support problem. Use the diagnostic method documented for your operating system, framework, and release; there is no single universal command that proves all four layers.
What each successful layer proves
- An OS device listing proves that the system can identify the hardware; it does not prove that ROCm can open it.
- A successful ROCm check proves that the compute runtime can communicate with the card; it does not prove that a framework was built with AMD support.
- A framework enumeration proves that the framework can create or list an AMD device; it does not prove that the application will choose that device.
- An application status display or log showing the AMD backend proves that the final program selected it, rather than merely detecting it and using CPU fallback.
Capture the output at each stage. If a later change causes an earlier stage to fail, restore the last known-good configuration before continuing.
When the ROCm Runfile Installer reports no GPU or the wrong architecture
These instructions apply specifically to AMD’s ROCm Runfile Installer. They are not universal remedies for every package-manager installation or AI framework.

Inspect detected GPUs with gfx=show
If the Runfile installer says the GPU was not detected or selects the wrong architecture, use the installer’s documented gfx=show option to display detected GPUs. Compare the result with your exact card and the architecture supported by the ROCm release.
If automatic detection is wrong, manually specify the correct architecture using the syntax documented by the Runfile guide for the installer build you downloaded. Do not copy an example from a different installer release: option names and supported architectures can change.
What an architecture mismatch indicates
- The card may be outside the selected ROCm release’s supported architecture list.
- The installer may have detected another GPU in the system.
- An older or conflicting installation may have left multiple architecture selections.
- The installer may lack access to the device or its required system information.
Correcting the architecture selection will not add support for a GPU that the compatibility matrix excludes. If more than one AMD card is installed, identify which device the application is intended to use before changing the installer’s selection.
Fix common Runfile installation problems
Install missing dependencies
ROCm components depend on operating-system packages. If the Runfile guide reports missing dependencies, install the packages required for your specific distribution and release, then rerun the relevant installation or validation step. Dependency names and commands are release- and distribution-specific, so use the instructions for the ROCm version you selected rather than an old command copied from a forum.
Do not treat a completed installer progress bar as proof that every prerequisite is present. A missing dependency can allow files to be copied while preventing the runtime from initializing later.

Run skipped post-install configuration
If post-install configuration was skipped, run the documented postrocm procedure from the Runfile guide. This step configures the installation after the files are placed on the system. A successful file installation alone does not guarantee that the runtime is configured for use.
Check GPU access permissions
On systems where ROCm cannot access a card after installation, check the documented permissions for the video and render device groups. Confirm that the account launching the AI application has the required membership and that the device nodes have the expected access.
When you add a user to a group, log out and back in before retesting; an existing session may not receive the new group membership. If the application runs as a service, container user, or another account, check permissions for that account rather than only your interactive login.

Look for conflicting architecture installations
Multiple architecture installations can conflict, particularly after trying different Runfile options. Inspect the architectures installed by the Runfile workflow and remove or correct conflicting components according to the release’s instructions. Avoid layering a second architecture over a broken installation until you know which files and packages the installer manages.
Keep one documented target architecture and one release in the test plan. Repeatedly selecting different architectures without recording the result makes it difficult to tell whether the card is unsupported or the installation is inconsistent.
Install a matching driver and ROCm release
AMD’s ROCm installation instructions direct you to select the driver and ROCm components for the target operating system and GPU, using the compatibility matrix to verify driver support. Follow the installation route for the exact ROCm release you are installing.
The current installation documentation is for ROCm 10.1.0. Commands shown in an older AMD Radeon ROCm getting-started guide use ROCm 6.1.3 and are historical examples, not current installation instructions. Mixing a 6.1.3 command with a 10.1.0 package, or combining repositories and Runfile components from different releases, can leave a system that appears partly installed but cannot initialize the GPU.
Before changing the installation
- Record the current driver, ROCm, framework, and application versions.
- Choose one installation method and follow that release’s complete procedure.
- Check whether the application requires a particular framework build or ROCm minor version.
- Remove or repair conflicting old components only as directed by the release documentation.
- Plan a reboot or user-session restart when the installation instructions require it.
- Keep a copy of the previous configuration and note every package or option changed.
There is no generally justified hardware purchase for this symptom. A new graphics card, cable, or diagnostic utility cannot compensate for an unsupported GPU/OS/ROCm/application combination. Establish support first; only then consider hardware changes required by the application’s documented requirements.

Diagnose by symptom
The operating system does not see the AMD card
Do not begin with framework settings. Check the physical installation, firmware settings, operating-system device listing, and AMD display driver first. If the OS cannot identify the device, ROCm and the AI application cannot use it. Resolve the OS-level problem before proceeding.
The OS sees the card, but ROCm does not
Recheck the matrix, driver/ROCm pairing, architecture selection, dependencies, post-install configuration, and video/render permissions. For a Runfile installation, use gfx=show when detection or architecture selection is suspect, and use postrocm when post-install configuration was skipped.
ROCm works, but the framework reports no device
Verify that the framework build actually includes AMD support and is compatible with the installed ROCm release. Check the framework’s own supported GPU list and version requirements. A correctly installed ROCm runtime cannot make an unsupported framework build enumerate an AMD device.

Check the application’s supported backend, version, launch options, and device-selection settings. Some applications require an explicit AMD or ROCm backend; others support only selected GPU families. Confirm that the application is not running inside an environment that hides the device.
The application fails only in a container or virtual machine
Compare the result with a native test. The host may detect the card while the guest or container lacks device access, group permissions, runtime libraries, or the required pass-through configuration. Treat the isolated environment as a separate compatibility setup rather than assuming host detection proves guest access.
The application reports the wrong GPU
First determine whether more than one GPU is visible. The Runfile installer’s architecture selection and the application’s device-selection setting are separate controls. Confirm the intended card at the OS and runtime layers, then configure the framework or application according to its own documentation. Do not force an architecture merely because it is the first device listed.

Change one relevant item at a time and record the result. A useful retest sequence is:
- Restart the session or system when the installation procedure requires it.
- Confirm the operating system still identifies the exact GPU.
- Run the AMD/ROCm detection check appropriate to your release and installation method.
- Launch a minimal framework device-enumeration test using the framework’s official instructions.
- Start the AI application and verify its selected device or backend in its own status output.
- Save the new error text if the next layer fails.
If a change makes detection worse, revert that single change before trying another. This preserves a clear cause-and-effect trail and prevents several incompatible fixes from being applied together.

What not to assume
- “The monitor works, so AI should work.” Graphics output and compute support are different capabilities.
- “The GPU is in AMD’s matrix, so every AI program supports it.” The application may impose narrower requirements.
- “The latest command found online is correct.” ROCm installation commands are release-specific; an example using ROCm 6.1.3 is not current guidance for ROCm 10.1.0.
- “Reinstalling will fix an unsupported architecture.” Installation cannot create support that the matrix does not provide.
- “A permission change failed immediately.” A new group membership may require a fresh login, and service accounts need their own permissions checked.
- “One detection result proves the whole stack works.” Test the OS, runtime, framework, and application separately.
- “A package-manager fix applies to a Runfile installation.” Use Runfile remedies only for the Runfile workflow and follow the release-specific guide.
When to stop troubleshooting and escalate
Collect the exact GPU model, OS and release, driver and ROCm versions, installation method, framework and application versions, complete error text, and the layer at which detection fails. Include whether the issue occurs natively, in a container, or in a virtual machine. This information lets the application or framework maintainer distinguish an unsupported combination from a faulty installation.
If the GPU/OS/ROCm combination is absent from the applicable compatibility matrix, or the application explicitly excludes that GPU or backend, further reinstallations are unlikely to help. Choose a documented supported combination instead of forcing an unlisted architecture. If all lower layers pass but the application still fails, escalate to that application’s support channel with the recorded versions and layer-by-layer results.

It is documented for the AMD ROCm Runfile Installer’s GPU-detection and architecture-selection troubleshooting. Do not assume it applies to every ROCm installation method.
What does postrocm do?
In the Runfile workflow, it performs the documented post-install configuration when that step was skipped. Use the procedure for the exact installer release.
Why should I avoid using commands from a ROCm 6.1.3 guide with ROCm 10.1.0?
Installation commands and prerequisites are release-specific. Mixing releases can produce incompatible drivers, libraries, or repositories.
What if my GPU is listed by AMD but not by my AI application?
ROCm compatibility does not certify every third-party application. Check the application’s own AMD backend, framework, operating-system, and GPU requirements.

A new group membership may not reach an existing login session. Log out and back in, then check the account that actually launches the application, including service or container accounts.
Should I buy another GPU or cable first?
No general purchase is justified by this symptom alone. Verify the exact GPU, OS, driver, ROCm, framework, and application support before spending money.
What should I provide when asking for help?
Provide the exact GPU, operating-system release, driver, ROCm and framework versions, AI application version, installation method, complete error text, and whether the failure occurs at the OS, ROCm, framework, or application layer.
The Bottom Line
An AMD GPU can be visible to the display system yet unusable by AI software. Match the exact GPU, OS, driver, ROCm release, framework, and application; test those layers in order; and apply Runfile-specific fixes such as gfx=show, postrocm, dependency repair, and permission checks only when that installation method applies. If the combination is unsupported, reinstalling will not make it supported.
