When an AI appears to reuse something you shared months ago, that does not prove the model was trained on your conversation. The information may still exist in service logs, application state, a memory feature, or a separately stored file that a retrieval tool can consult. Training is a different pathway: eligible content may be used to improve a model, depending on the product and your settings.
The practical answer is to identify the exact product, endpoint, feature, purpose, retention period, and deletion control involved. OpenAI’s documented rules illustrate why one global answer for “AI data” is misleading.
“The AI remembered it” can describe three different systems
People usually ask one question—“Can ChatGPT remember something I said before?”—but the answer depends on what happened to the data after the original interaction. A service can keep records for operations or safety, retrieve a separately stored object when generating a later response, or use eligible content in model-improvement processes. Those mechanisms can overlap in one product, but they are not interchangeable.

That distinction matters because the remedy changes with the mechanism. A training opt-out addresses model-improvement use; it is not a universal deletion request. Removing a file from a retrieval store does not necessarily remove a copy held in another record. A short log-retention period does not mean every application object expires on the same schedule.

Retention: data the service keeps
Abuse-monitoring logs
OpenAI’s API data-controls documentation says abuse-monitoring logs may include prompts and responses and are retained for up to 30 days by default. The period is a provider policy limit, not an industry statistic. The documentation also describes exceptions: a longer period may apply when required by law or reasonably necessary to protect the service or another party. Therefore, “30 days” should be read as the default described for that log category, not as a guarantee that every copy disappears after 30 days.
These logs serve a different function from the data objects an application creates. A prompt can appear in an abuse-monitoring record even when a separate feature has its own storage and deletion rules.
Application state and feature objects
The same API documentation separates abuse-monitoring logs from application state used by particular endpoints and features. In specified Responses API cases, response storage can follow a 30-day period. Other objects can persist until you delete them. For example, Assistants API-related objects that are not deleted through the API or dashboard are described as being retained indefinitely.

Retention controls have boundaries
Approved customers may be eligible for Modified Abuse Monitoring or Zero Data Retention (ZDR), subject to requirements and limitations. OpenAI describes ZDR as excluding customer content from abuse-monitoring logs as specified and changing how the store parameter is handled for certain endpoints.

ZDR does not mean that every feature leaves no data anywhere. The documentation warns that endpoints or capabilities ineligible for ZDR may still store application state. Eligibility, endpoint behavior, and exceptions must be checked against the current table rather than inferred from the name of the control. Retrieval: old material supplied at response time
Retrieval lets an AI consult material stored outside the model’s learned parameters. An application might search uploaded files, a thread, a vector store, or another connected source and place relevant results into the context used to answer a new request. If the same source is still connected, the system can appear to “remember” an old document even when that document was never used to train the underlying model.
OpenAI’s API treats files, threads, and vector stores as application objects with their own persistence and deletion behavior. That creates several separate questions:
- Which object contains the source: an uploaded file, a thread, a vector store, or another feature resource?
- Is the object still linked to the assistant, project, or workflow that can retrieve it?
- Who has permission to invoke that retrieval?
- What deletion operation removes the object, and does deletion also remove derived indexes or related records?
A retrieval result proves that the system could access a stored source at that time. It does not, by itself, prove that the source entered model training. Conversely, disabling model improvement does not automatically remove a file or vector-store resource that the application still uses.
Retrieval implementations differ across providers and products. The OpenAI examples document one feature model; they do not establish a universal rule for every search-augmented or file-aware AI system.

Training and model improvement are separate from storage
Business products and the API
OpenAI says data from its named business products and API platform is not used for model training or improvement by default. API customers can explicitly opt in to share data. That default answers a model-improvement question; it does not answer how long logs, files, threads, responses, or other application objects remain stored.
Business customers can also have configurable retention controls, but the applicable settings depend on the product and organization configuration. A workspace administrator’s retention rule may govern business data while a connected application or API project has separate object behavior.

Individual services
For individual services, OpenAI says eligible content may be used to improve models when the relevant data-use setting permits it. Users can control whether new conversations and tasks are included. The setting concerns future eligible use; it should not be described as a command to erase existing conversations or application objects.
The exact scope depends on the individual product and the setting presented there. Check the account’s current data-controls interface and the applicable help documentation instead of assuming that a control has the same effect in an API project, a business workspace, and a consumer account.

Temporary chats and memory
OpenAI’s consumer-services guidance says temporary chats stay out of chat history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. Those statements describe the temporary-chat behavior as documented; they should not be expanded into a promise about every downstream record, legal exception, or provider-wide storage system.
Memory and chat history are also distinct concepts. A product can have a memory feature with its own controls while retaining other records for service operation. If an old detail appears in a response, determine whether it came from an enabled memory, a conversation history, a connected retrieval source, or another application object before deciding what to delete.

Why turning off training does not delete old data
A model-improvement setting and a deletion operation act on different layers. Turning off training can change whether newly eligible content is shared for model improvement, but it does not necessarily remove:

- existing chat records or abuse-monitoring logs that are still within their stated retention period;
- files, threads, responses, vector stores, or other application objects;
- memory entries maintained by a separate feature;
- copies held under a legal, security, or safety exception described by the provider.
Deletion must therefore be requested or performed at the layer where the data lives. You may need to delete a conversation, clear a memory, remove a file, delete a vector store, or remove an API object separately. The available operation and its effect are product- and endpoint-specific.

How to check a service before sending sensitive information
- Identify the product context. Write down whether you are using a consumer service, a business workspace, or an API project. Do not apply a business or API default to a consumer account, or vice versa.
- Name the feature and endpoint. Determine whether the interaction uses ordinary chat, memory, file uploads, a thread, a vector store, the Responses API, the Assistants API, or another capability. Retention can differ between endpoints.
- Separate the purposes. Look for statements about abuse monitoring, application storage, retrieval, and model improvement. A policy sentence about one purpose does not answer the others.
- Check the data-use setting. Confirm whether eligible conversations or tasks can be used for model improvement and whether the control is an opt-out, an opt-in, or a workspace-level rule.
- Inspect retention and deletion controls. Find the stated period, the objects that persist until deleted, and the exact API or dashboard action that removes them.
- Check exceptions and eligibility. For controls such as ZDR or Modified Abuse Monitoring, verify approval requirements, endpoint eligibility, and application-state exceptions.
- Remove connected sources. If a later answer could come from a file or vector store, delete or disconnect that resource and confirm what related objects remain.
- Minimize the input. Redact names, account numbers, credentials, confidential documents, and other details that are not required for the task. A policy control is not a substitute for data minimization.
A practical way to diagnose an apparent “memory” event
When the answer quotes a detail from a previous conversation
First check whether the conversation is still available in history or whether a memory feature contains the detail. If neither explains it, examine connected files, threads, or other application resources. Only after those paths are excluded should you treat model-improvement use as a possible explanation—and even then, the response alone cannot prove how the information was obtained.
When an old uploaded document reappears
Look for a surviving file object or vector-store entry and the permissions of the workflow that retrieved it. Removing training access would not remove that source. Delete the relevant application objects using the product’s documented controls, then verify that the assistant or project no longer has a connection to them.
When a supposedly deleted item is still referenced
Check whether you deleted only the visible chat while leaving a file, thread, memory, or API object intact. Also check whether the provider describes a short delay, legal retention, safety exception, or an endpoint that is outside a special retention program. The provider’s object-level documentation is more informative than a general “delete my data” label.
Questions to ask when comparing two AI services
Use the same five axes for each service, but record the answers separately:
- Product context: Is it a consumer plan, business workspace, or API project?
- Purpose: Is the data retained for abuse monitoring, stored as application state, retrieved at response time, or used for model improvement?
- Control scope: Does the setting affect training, logs, a specific endpoint, memory, or a stored file?
- Duration and deletion: Is there a stated period, does the object persist until deleted, and are legal or safety exceptions listed?
- Eligibility: Does a special program require approval, and are some endpoints or capabilities excluded?
Do not infer another provider’s defaults from OpenAI’s documentation. The cited policies are OpenAI-specific examples, and retention periods or training settings can change as products and endpoints change.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The documented examples establish that retention, retrieval, and training are separate data pathways and that product context changes the answer. They do not establish a universal AI retention duration, a cross-provider training default, or a prevalence statistic for old-data exposure. No response can identify the source of a remembered detail without access to that product’s logs, feature configuration, and object history.
