AI can misidentify a blurry photo because blur weakens or removes visual details that a recognition model learned to use. A model trained mainly on clear images may then face input that differs from its training examples. Its output is a calculation based on image data—not human-like seeing.
What a vision model processes in a photo
A computer-vision model does not experience a picture as a person does. It processes numeric image data through learned computations and produces outputs such as class scores or object detections. Those outputs depend on patterns the model learned from its training examples.
Some of those patterns involve fine spatial detail: edges, texture, and other small-scale information. Research has proposed that CNNs can rely heavily on such high spatial-frequency information, which blur can weaken. If those details were important to the model’s prediction, the result may become less reliable when they disappear.
What blur changes
Blur is not one uniform condition. Motion from a moving subject or a shaking camera, and a lens that is out of focus, can each soften edges and fine texture. Depending on the type and severity, blur can also obscure shape cues. Other image problems—such as haze, low resolution, noise, and compression distortion—change the evidence in different ways, so one kind of blur or one restoration method cannot stand in for every degraded image.

Whether blur is harmful can also depend on what matters in the scene. A CVPR study on understanding image blur notes that judging blur is not just a low-level measurement task: a system may need to consider which regions matter and the photographer’s intent.
Why clear-image training can lead to mistakes
A model learns from the examples and variations it sees during training. If those examples are consistently clear, blur at prediction time creates a mismatch: details that often helped the model classify an object are weaker or missing in the new image.

In a 2019 study, Samuel Dodge and Lina Karam compared people and neural networks on images affected by Gaussian blur or additive Gaussian noise. Their crowdsourced experiment allowed unlimited viewing time; their laboratory experiment showed images for 100 milliseconds. People outperformed the tested networks on the distorted stimuli, including networks retrained with distorted data. That is a finding from those experiments, not a universal ranking of people over all AI systems.

Can training on blurry photos make AI more robust?
It can help, but the improvement depends on the model, training choices, distortions, and evaluation task. In a 2024 Nature Communications study, Hojin Jang and Frank Tong compared standard CNNs with CNNs trained on both clear and blurry images. The blur-trained models better predicted neural responses across viewing conditions, became more sensitive to shape information, and gained robustness to several types of noise and image compression. Those results show that training can change which image information a model uses; they do not establish that blur training prevents every recognition failure.

A separate 2023 study found a related limit. Training on sharp and blurred images improved robustness to blur changes and slightly reduced texture bias, but did not give CNNs human-level shape bias or robust recognition based on global configuration features. Adding blurred examples is therefore a way to improve performance under some conditions, not a way to make a model recognize objects exactly as a person does.
Does sharpening or deblurring guarantee a better prediction?
No general guarantee is established. An IEEE study examined how removing image degradations affects CNN-based classification across nine degradation types, but the available findings do not support a blanket rule that restoration improves recognition in every case. Restoration may alter or infer details, so a model’s result after processing should not be treated as proof that the original image contained those details.

How to compare claims about blurry-image recognition
An accuracy result is meaningful only in the context of the conditions and task used to produce it. When comparing two studies or systems, check:
- Distortion: whether the input has motion blur, defocus, Gaussian blur, noise, compression, or another degradation, and how severe it is.
- Image capture: whether the subject or camera moved, and whether resolution or compression also changed.
- Model and training: which model was tested and whether training included distorted examples.
- Task and labels: whether the model had to classify an image, detect objects, or complete another task, and what label set it used.
- Evaluation target: whether results were compared with human responses, neural responses, or ground-truth labels.
These distinctions matter because the cited studies measure different things. There is no single accuracy figure that describes how well all AI systems recognize all blurry photos.
