Filmmakers did not suddenly object to computers making images. They spent decades building computer-assisted tools into production. The current disputes are sharper because generative AI raises questions beyond how an image is rendered: what works trained the model, who controls a synthetic likeness, what creative work remains human, and who gets credit. CGI and generative AI are related uses of computing, but they are not the same process—and the evidence does not show that audiences or the film industry as a whole reacted in one uniform way.
What the comparison gets right—and what it misses
Computer-generated imagery has long been part of filmmaking, but “computers making movies” can describe very different things. A studio can use software to carry out artist-directed modeling, rendering, compositing, or animation. Generative AI can instead produce or transform substantial visual, audio, or textual material from learned patterns and prompts. Human direction can matter in either workflow; how much varies by project.
That difference does not make older computer graphics free of artistic debate or make every generative-AI use artist-free. It does help explain why a dispute over a new tool may involve more than whether a digital image looks convincing. The U.S. Copyright Office is examining generative-AI training and output copyrightability, while performer agreements address consent and the use of digital replicas. Those issues cannot be collapsed into a simple story of people accepting one technology and rejecting another.

These are useful comparison points, not fixed rules for every production. Computer graphics can involve many kinds of assets and creative roles; AI-assisted work can also include extensive human research and judgment.

How computer animation became part of movie production
Pixar’s company timeline offers one concrete history, not a stand-in for every studio or effects shop. Pixar says Disney and Pixar began working together on CAPS—the Computer Animation Production System—in 1986. Pixar describes CAPS as a system that would change the creation of traditional animated films. Its proprietary animation system came online in 1987–88, the same period when its RenderMan renderer made its internal debut.
In 1991, Disney and Pixar agreed to make and distribute at least one computer-generated animated feature. Pixar released Toy Story on November 22, 1995, and describes it as the world’s first computer-animated feature film. Pixar reports $192 million domestic and $362 million worldwide — Pixar, year of release 1995.

That history shows how far back purpose-built computer-animation systems go. It does not show that those systems and present-day generative models raise identical questions. Pixar’s timeline describes production tools and a studio pipeline; current AI debates also concern training material, rights in outputs, synthetic likenesses, and labor protections.
Why performer likeness and consent became flashpoints
For performers, one distinct concern is having a scan or replica made and then used in ways they did not agree to. SAG-AFTRA’s FAQ for its 2023 TV/Theatrical contracts says producers must give a performer at least 48 hours’ notice before a scan, or notice at hiring if the hiring occurs less than 48 hours before the scan.

For replica use, the FAQ says the producer must provide a reasonably specific description and seek consent. Consent is required again for a different project or a materially different use, subject to the contract language and exceptions. The FAQ distinguishes employment-based replicas, made with a performer’s participation for a particular project, from independently created replicas made outside a particular project. It also says a wholly synthetic character not based on an actual performer falls under synthetic-performer language, while a character resembling an actual performer is governed by digital-replica terms.
These are explanations of particular union agreements, not universal rules for every performer, employer, production, or jurisdiction. SAG-AFTRA’s AI timeline describes the 2023 TV/Theatrical/Streaming strike agreement as including digital-replica terms and AI protections, and records members’ ratification of an animation agreement with enhanced voice-replica protections in March 2024. Those are negotiated protections, not a blanket ban on AI.

Copyright questions are still being worked through
The U.S. Copyright Office’s multipart report addresses digital replicas, whether generative-AI outputs can be copyrighted, and copyrighted works used to train AI. The Office dates Part 1, on digital replicas, to July 31, 2024; Part 2, on copyrightability, to January 29, 2025; and a prepublication Part 3, on training, to May 9, 2025. Its overview says a final Part 3 will follow.

AI-assisted filmmaking can still involve filmmaking
An ACM SIGGRAPH account of a filmmaking course describes a process that began with historical research, locations, newspapers, and archival photographs before generative tools were used. The filmmaker said the work still relied on research, design, editorial judgment, visual effects, and post-production. It is one educational project, not proof that every AI-assisted production follows the same path.
Anthony Giacchino, the filmmaker and faculty member teaching the course, put the distinction this way: “It was never AI replacing filmmaking. It was AI being folded into our filmmaking process.” In advice to students exploring AI-driven storytelling, he also said: “Do not mistake prompting for authorship or filmmaking.”
That example points to a practical issue for audiences as well as filmmakers: when generated imagery represents history or documentary material, viewers need enough transparency to understand what they are seeing and how it was made.

The available evidence here does not establish a comparable pattern of public reaction. It identifies a long history of computer-animation tools and current, specific disputes about consent, copyright, training material, and labor protections. It does not provide a representative poll of viewers’ views of CGI or generative AI, or a measured comparison of their effects on creative jobs.
So the title’s “got mad” works as shorthand for visible industry disputes, not as a claim that everyone embraced CGI or that Hollywood as a whole now opposes AI. Some objections concern the technology’s use and governance rather than the presence of computers in filmmaking. That distinction makes the debate less contradictory: accepting computer tools for artist-directed production does not settle who may use a person’s likeness, what data may train a model, or how human creative contributions should be recognized.
