AI-generated video ads usually look unnatural when the model has to guess important visual decisions: what the camera should do, how a subject moves, where light comes from, or what an exact product looks like. The most reliable correction is a shot-by-shot workflow: write a specific direction brief, anchor identity and composition with reference images, approve still key frames, generate simple motion, and inspect every cut for continuity and product accuracy.
These practices improve control; they do not guarantee photorealism, conversion performance, or compliance with advertising rules. Treat the model as a production assistant that needs explicit direction and human review.
Why AI video ads look artificial
A text-to-video model must decide many things at once. If a prompt says only “a person uses our coffee machine,” the model still has to invent the person’s appearance, the room, the machine’s proportions, the camera framing, the action sequence, the lighting, and what happens between frames. OpenAI’s Sora 2 Prompting Guide puts the practical consequence plainly: “Unless you describe these details, Sora will make them up.”
Invented details can make a clip feel synthetic even when individual frames look attractive. A logo may change shape, a hand may approach a product from an impossible angle, a camera may drift when a locked shot was intended, or light may switch direction between adjacent shots. The official guidance does not establish one universal technical cause for every artifact, so diagnose what the viewer actually sees rather than assuming a particular model failure.

| What looks wrong | First input to inspect | Practical correction |
|---|---|---|
| The action is hard to read | Subject, action, framing and timing | Describe one clear action in one shot and state the framing. |
| The camera moves unexpectedly | Camera direction | Specify a static, pan, tilt, dolly or other intentional movement; remove competing motion. |
| Light changes between clips | Lighting quality, sources and color anchors | Repeat the same light sources and palette in every shot that must cut together. |
| A person or set changes appearance | Reference image and appearance details | Use a visual anchor and describe the stable attributes that matter. |
| The product, label or controls are wrong | Product reference | Show a clear product image, preferably from several angles, instead of describing every detail only in text. |
There is no reliable published statistic showing how often these problems occur or how much any one fix improves ad results. The recommendations below are control and review practices, not performance guarantees.
Write a direction brief, not a subject label
Google’s Veo prompting guide identifies framing, camera movement, style, lighting, character appearance, location, action and dialogue as controllable parts of a prompt. A useful ad prompt therefore states what the viewer should see and how the shot should be filmed, rather than naming only a subject.
Google summarizes the principle as: “The more detail you add, the more control you’ll have over the final output.” Detail should be relevant and testable, not a pile of adjectives. If the shot fails, you need to know which instruction to change.
Cover the decisions that affect the shot
- Subject: identify the person, object or product and the attributes that must remain stable.
- Action: describe a single observable action, including its order when sequence matters.
- Framing: state close-up, medium shot, wide shot, angle and subject placement.
- Camera: specify whether it is locked, handheld, panning, tilting, tracking or dollying, and in which direction.
- Setting: name the location, important set dressing and time of day.
- Lighting: describe quality and sources, such as soft window light, warm practical fill or a cool edge light.
- Style and palette: choose a visual treatment and a few color anchors that can be repeated across shots.
- Dialogue or text: provide exact wording only when the tool can render it reliably; plan to verify all on-screen text.
A reusable single-shot template
Put the instructions in an order that mirrors production decisions. For example:
Medium close-up of [subject] in [location]. The subject [one action] over [brief duration]. Locked camera at eye level; [lighting sources and quality]. Palette: [two or three color anchors]. [Style]. Keep [identity or product attributes] unchanged.
Generate a simple version first. Add one meaningful element at a time so a successful or failed change is attributable to a specific instruction.

- 【Stepless Dimming & High CRI】 Integrate 480 high-quality LED Light Beads with Dimmable Range 1%-100%, You can easily adjust the brightness to get the desired lighting effect. High Color Rendering Index (95+) and no strobe, create brighter and softer lights, help leave your photos looking more natural and great texture.
- 【Multi-angle Shooting】The photo light box offers 3 openings enable you to choose any photo shooting position for getting more perfect product features and beauty. When you want to shoot smaller items and with high reflecting light products, just stand up the baffle and open the small window. The light source will be more concentrated and the shooting effect will be better.
- 【4 Color PVC Backdrops】The photo box comes with 4 color detachable backgrounds(White/Black/ Orange/Green), made of thicker PVC, which are sturdy enough and no wrinkles, so you can easily change background colors and build up various shooting scenes as needs.
- 【Assembly in Second】The photography box Dimension is 16*16 inch. With particular folding design, the whole assembly of portable ring light box ONLY needs 10 seconds. No bracket. No screws. No complicated lighting layout. With a durable and waterproof carry bag, it’s very compact and convenient to use in many places without taking a lot of spaces.
- 【Advanced Photography】The design of the shooting box easily solve the shadow problem that cannot be solved by the studio, also can be used for dual purposes (studio + softbox), which is the best practice for fixing the problem of products’ highly reflecting light and performing more details of the contours. Not only for junior photographers, but also for advanced photographers and professionals.
Use reference images when identity matters
Text is a poor substitute for a visual anchor when the ad depends on a person’s appearance, a set, wardrobe, package, logo, label or control layout. OpenAI describes image input as an anchor for composition and style in the Sora 2 guide. With an image-to-video workflow, the prompt can focus primarily on the desired motion instead of asking the model to reconstruct the entire scene.
For products, the Runway product-video guide recommends high-resolution, isolated and unobstructed references, plus multiple product angles. A single view may not preserve unseen surfaces when the camera moves; details that are not shown can be invented. Supply the angles needed for the planned shots and keep the product large enough to inspect.

Use product references to preserve proportions, labels, buttons and logo placement. Use a separate style reference when you want to change the campaign’s mood, color grade or environment without changing the product itself. This separation prevents a style image from becoming the accidental source of product geometry.
If you need to create new reference photos for a small object, a product photography light box can help you capture an evenly lit, isolated image. It is an aid for making a clean reference, not a fix for generated motion and not a guarantee that the model will reproduce the item accurately.
“The input image establishes the visual starting point of the entire generative process by conveying key visual information about subjects, composition, colors, lighting, and style— allowing you to focus on describing the desired motion.” — Runway, Gen-4 Video Prompting Guide

Build the ad as a sequence of directed shots
A finished commercial is rarely one successful prompt. The product-video workflow described by Runway treats the ad as a set of purposeful beats, each with its own composition and motion. Directing one shot at a time limits the number of decisions the model must make and gives you checkpoints before you spend effort on animation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Write the script and beats. Divide the ad into shots with a job: establish the problem, show the product, demonstrate an action, present a benefit, and deliver the call to action. Keep each beat visually legible.
- Define the shot brief. For every beat, record subject, action, framing, camera movement, setting, lighting, palette, duration and any dialogue or on-screen copy.
- Create a key frame. Generate or select a still image that establishes the composition, product position, wardrobe and set. Do not animate a frame that already contains an incorrect label or impossible hand placement.
- Review the frame. Check the product silhouette, logo, label, button placement, faces, hands, props, negative space for copy and the direction of light. Correct the frame before moving on.
- Generate motion. Use the approved frame as the visual anchor and describe only the intended movement. Keep the action and camera direction simple enough to evaluate.
- Assemble and inspect the cut. Watch adjacent shots for changes in identity, lighting, scale, color and screen direction. Verify that the product remains the same object from shot to shot.
- Iterate one variable. If the camera is wrong, change the camera instruction; if the label is wrong, improve the product reference. Avoid rewriting every part of the prompt at once.
Runway characterizes this distinction as: “Text to video hands the model every decision at once. Image to video hands it one decision at a time, and image models are cheaper, faster and far more controllable than video models.” That is guidance from Runway, not a universal benchmark across all tools or plans.
Fix the most common unnatural-looking results
When the action is vague or physically confusing
Reduce the shot to one subject and one primary action. State what moves, where it moves and what remains still. Replace “an exciting product demonstration” with an observable instruction such as “the presenter lifts the bottle from the counter, turns the label toward camera and sets it down.” Choose a stable frame before adding speed, particles or secondary actors.
When the camera wanders
Name the camera behavior explicitly and remove contradictory language. “Locked camera, medium close-up” is different from “dynamic cinematic movement.” If a move is required, give its direction and endpoint, such as a slow left-to-right track that keeps the product centered. Review the generated clip for unintended zooms or perspective shifts before adding any other effect.
When lighting changes across clips
Describe the quality and sources of light, not just “bright.” OpenAI’s prompting examples use soft window light, warm lamp fill and a cool hallway edge, then anchor the palette with colors such as amber, cream and walnut brown. Reuse the same logic in every shot that should cut together. A change in light direction or color temperature can make an otherwise consistent subject appear to change.

When a person, wardrobe or set drifts
Use a reference image and repeat only the identity details that matter: hairstyle, clothing color, accessories, age range, set layout or camera side. Keep the reference unobstructed and frame it similarly to the intended shot. If continuity is more important than variety, avoid asking one generation to change location, wardrobe and camera angle simultaneously.
When the product looks wrong
Show the product. Include high-resolution, isolated images with the logo, label, controls and distinctive geometry visible. Add multiple angles for shots that reveal different sides. If a generated frame has a misspelled label or altered button, reject it at the key-frame stage rather than trying to hide the error with motion or a fast cut.
When the scene contains too many competing elements
Follow Runway’s advice to add one new element at a time. Start with subject, scene and camera motion; then introduce a second actor, prop or effect only after the base shot behaves as intended. Runway states: “Adding one new element at a time will help you identify which additions improve your video, understand how different elements interact, and more effectively troubleshoot unexpected results.”

Use a continuity checklist before publishing
- Identity: Is the same person, product and package design present in every shot where continuity is intended?
- Geometry: Do proportions, openings, buttons, caps and handles remain plausible from each angle?
- Text: Are labels, prices, legal lines and calls to action spelled correctly and legibly? Replace generated text in an editor when necessary.
- Lighting: Do direction, softness, color temperature and shadow behavior match between cuts?
- Palette: Do the named color anchors remain recognizable, or did a new shot introduce a conflicting grade?
- Camera: Does each move match the brief, and does screen direction remain understandable?
- Physics and anatomy: Do hands, faces, reflections, contact with surfaces and object weight look credible?
- Brand safety: Are there accidental symbols, background marks, claims or people who were not authorized for the ad?
- Platform versions: Does the crop preserve the product, text-safe area and action in every required aspect ratio?
Check AI-ad disclosure requirements
Disclosure controls depend on the platform, campaign settings, location and current policy. Google Display & Video 360 lets users designate assets as AI-generated or AI-edited, with disclosure in “About this Ad” or “How this ad was made.” Google says visible overlays may appear for campaigns targeting the European Union, India and New York, and cautions that its setting does not guarantee compliance with a specific regulation. See the current Display & Video 360 AI content label guidance when configuring a campaign.
Meta’s February 3, 2025 newsroom update describes labels for some ads created or significantly edited with Meta’s own generative AI tools and notes that the experience can vary by region. Read the current Meta transparency announcement and the campaign interface rather than assuming one label treatment applies everywhere. Also check applicable consumer-protection, election, financial, health and local advertising rules for the market in which the ad will run.
A repeatable troubleshooting loop
- Watch without the prompt. Write down the exact visible failure: unclear action, unwanted camera movement, lighting mismatch, appearance drift or inaccurate product detail.
- Map the failure to one input. Choose the relevant instruction or reference instead of changing the entire brief.
- Simplify the shot. Remove secondary actors, effects and extra camera movement until the primary action is readable.
- Regenerate from a better anchor. Use an approved key frame or a clearer product image when identity is the issue.
- Compare versions side by side. Keep the successful prompt and frame, then change one variable in the next attempt.
- Recheck the assembled sequence. A shot that looks acceptable alone can still break continuity when placed beside another shot.
This loop is a troubleshooting method, not evidence that every generation will become natural after a fixed number of attempts. Some shots should be redesigned, filmed conventionally or edited around when the model cannot hold a required product or performance detail.

What “natural” can and cannot promise
Natural-looking output is a production objective, not a measurable guarantee supplied by the cited documentation. The guides support clearer prompts, visual references, staged key frames, controlled lighting and incremental iteration. They do not provide a universal realism score, a conversion uplift, or a model ranking that applies to every ad.
Human approval remains necessary for factual claims, product representation, legal copy, rights, accessibility and platform disclosure. If a detail matters to the customer’s decision, show it accurately, verify it in the final export and do not rely on the model to infer what was never supplied.
