AI coding tools can help developers finish bounded programming tasks, but producing code is only one part of software development. Developers also have to understand an unfamiliar repository, choose a safe change, validate it, coordinate reviews, and maintain what ships. That gap—not a universal inability to understand code—is why faster code generation does not automatically mean a smoother or more productive workflow.

Writing code is not the whole development workflow

A code assistant can propose a function or help complete a narrowly defined task. The surrounding work is less self-contained: a developer must find the right place to make a change, understand how it interacts with existing behavior, decide whether the proposed approach fits the project, and check its effects before it is merged.

That work depends on context beyond the text being generated. Repository conventions, existing tests, team decisions, review capacity, and future maintenance all shape whether a suggestion is useful. This is an explanation of the mismatch between a tool’s local assistance and a developer’s broader responsibilities, not proof that AI tools never understand code or cannot help.

Why a faster task may not mean a faster workflow

Studies can find meaningful gains when they measure a bounded task, yet say less about the full process of changing and maintaining software. In a 2022 controlled coding task, GitHub reported that Copilot users completed the task 55% faster than participants without it. That result supports a claim about that experiment, not a blanket estimate for every codebase or engineering team. GitHub’s 2022 report also includes survey findings, which measure developers’ reported experience rather than observed productivity across all work.

In a later GitHub Customer Research study, experienced Python developers built API endpoints for a fictional restaurant-review web server. Among 202 valid submissions, participants using the tool were 53.2% more likely to pass all 10 unit tests. The constrained task and test-based outcome are useful evidence about that setting; they do not establish how an assistant performs across larger projects, unfamiliar repositories, or long-term maintenance. GitHub’s code-quality study describes its task and methodology.

The distinction is between helping with a piece of work and improving the whole chain of work. A task can finish sooner while the team still needs to inspect the output, integrate it, resolve review questions, and support the resulting code.

What longer-term observations reveal—and what they cannot

JetBrains Research analyzed two years of anonymized IDE telemetry from 800 developers—400 AI users and 400 non-users—alongside a survey of 62 developers. The dataset contained 151,904,543 logged events. AI users typed nearly 600 more characters per month, compared with 75 more for non-users. More than 80% of survey respondents reported a productivity increase. These figures describe editor activity and self-reported experience, not shipped value or end-to-end productivity. JetBrains’ account of the study explains its measures and design.

  • GIFT CHOICE: Interesting office gifts that can be given as gifts to programmer, software engineer, It Tech, computer science engineering, colleague, partners at Christmas, birthdays, company parties, and white elephant gift exchanges.

The same telemetry showed editing and switching signals: AI users’ deletions increased by about 100 per month, compared with about 7 for non-users, while IDE activations rose by about 6 per month among AI users and fell by about 7 among non-users. Deletions are not proof that AI caused extra rework, and IDE activations are not a complete measure of attention or fragmented work. Many survey respondents did not perceive changes in editing or context switching that appeared in the telemetry. The authors present the measures as proxies for finding patterns, not as causal evidence.

A survey can capture how people feel about their work; editor logs can show certain interactions; neither alone settles whether a team delivers better software. The measures answer different questions, so apparent disagreement between perception and observed behavior is a reason to examine the methods, not to declare one side wrong.

Maintenance can move work rather than remove it

A 2025 preprint by Xu, Medappa, Tunc, Vroegindeweij, and Fransoo examines open-source projects after Copilot adoption. The authors report 6.5% more code reviewed and 19% lower original-code productivity among experienced core developers in their analysis. Those estimates concern the projects and developers studied; they should not be generalized to every company or team.

Programmer Gifts, Debugging Definition Gift, Gifts for Computer Geeks
  • Gift Idea: This acrylic is carefully designed and can be given as a gift to family, friends, colleagues, etc., to express your love and care and make people feel happy
  • Decorative Gift: This decorative gift is exquisite and meaningful, and its interesting language can add a different atmosphere to ordinary daily spaces such as home, office, study, etc., and enhance visual appeal
  • Suitable Size: 4 x 4 inch acrylic sign, 4 x 1.5 x 0.8 inch wooden frame. The size is just right, does not take up a lot of space, and is convenient to use and place anywhere

  • Lightweight and High Quality: Made of high-quality acrylic, with clear printing, not easy to fade and wear, relatively light and durable

The result points to a possible workflow trade-off: producing more code can increase the amount other people need to assess, while experienced maintainers remain responsible for understanding and sustaining the system. The preprint authors write, “More broadly, this finding raises caution that productivity gains of AI may mask the growing burden of maintenance on a shrinking pool of experts.” That is a caution raised by their open-source analysis, not a universal finding about all AI-assisted development. The 2025 preprint provides its analysis and qualifications.

Why study results can seem to disagree

Different study designs observe different parts of development. A controlled coding task can measure completion time or whether tests pass under defined conditions. IDE telemetry can count selected interactions over time. Surveys can report perception and experience. An observational analysis can examine review and coding patterns in real projects, but it does not automatically prove what caused them. Vendor research, observational studies, surveys, and preprints should not be treated as interchangeable verdicts.

For example, a 2024 GitHub survey, updated in 2025, asked 2,000 enterprise respondents in the U.S., Brazil, Germany, and India about AI use at work; more than 97% said they had used AI coding tools at work at some point. That is a result about the survey’s respondents and wording, not a measure of how often all developers use such tools or what effect they have on delivery. GitHub’s enterprise survey report describes the population and findings.

Another counterexample to assuming perceived speed equals measured speed comes from a small METR study reported by TIME. Sixteen experienced developers working on complex projects estimated roughly a 20% speedup, while measured completion was about 20% slower. This specific sample is not a universal estimate, but it illustrates why both measurement and task context matter. TIME’s coverage reports the study and its limits.

When comparing claims, check the factors that determine what a result can establish:

  • Task scope and realism: Is it a short, defined exercise or work embedded in a substantial project?
  • Developer and codebase context: How experienced were the participants, and how familiar were they with the repository?
  • Tool access: Could the assistant use relevant repository context, or was the task limited to a narrow prompt?
  • Outcome: Did the study count time, typed or generated code, test results, review work, or maintenance?
  • Method and sample: Was it a controlled experiment, survey, telemetry analysis, or observational study, and how many people or projects were included?

How teams can tell whether assistance helps their workflow

Teams should evaluate AI assistance against their own work rather than treating accepted suggestions or increased code volume as productivity by themselves. GitHub recommends tailoring success metrics to an organization’s processes and goals, while the JetBrains authors warn against drawing causal conclusions from their telemetry.

A useful evaluation pairs operational outcomes with developer reports and qualitative accounts. Track measures that reflect the full change cycle—such as task completion, validation, review, and ongoing maintenance—alongside how developers say the tools affect their work. Interpret each measure in context: a rise in activity may reflect more output, more iteration, or both, and a faster isolated task may not predict the cost of integrating and supporting its result.

The practical question is not whether an AI tool can produce code. It is whether, for a particular team and task, the assistance improves the work from understanding the change through validating, reviewing, and maintaining it.
