AI coding agents can increase code output or speed on bounded tasks without improving the software that reaches users. The apparent paradox disappears when output, functional correctness, maintainability, learning, and delivery stability are measured separately. A field experiment may show more completed tasks, while work in a mature repository takes longer or creates larger changes that are harder to review. The evidence does not support a universal claim that agents produce more code and leave quality unchanged; it shows that results depend on the task, developer, repository, tool, and definition of quality.
Why “more code” is not the same as “more productivity”
Lines of code, generated files, commits, pull requests, completed tickets, elapsed time, test results, defect rates, readability, and maintainability describe different outcomes. Increasing one does not establish an increase in the others. METR notes that task counts or lines can rise without real productivity rising—for example, when code is more verbose or when one piece of work is split into several smaller tasks.
A useful definition of productivity is valuable, working software delivered with acceptable risk and sustainable effort. Under that definition, an agent that drafts a function in seconds may still fail to save time if the developer must reconstruct repository conventions, investigate hidden dependencies, rewrite an incorrect approach, or spend longer reviewing a large patch.
“Quality” also needs a stated scope. A change can pass its tests yet be difficult to understand, insecure under an untested input, expensive to operate, or incompatible with the next release. Conversely, a readable implementation may still miss a required behavior. Treating a single metric as a verdict creates the illusion of a contradiction.

What the controlled studies actually found
The strongest results are conditional, and the experiments used different tasks, participants, tools, and outcome measures. Comparing them requires keeping those differences visible.
| Study and date | Participants and setting | Tool or intervention | Reported result | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Research, 2025 | 4,867 developers across Microsoft, Accenture, and an anonymous Fortune 100 company; three randomized field experiments | Access to an AI coding assistant providing code completions | 26.08% increase in completed tasks; standard error 10.3% | It measured completed-task output, not independent software-quality or production-stability gains |
| METR, 2025 | 16 experienced open-source developers; 246 real issues in mature repositories; tasks averaged about two hours | AI allowed versus disallowed, mostly Cursor Pro with Claude 3.5/3.7 Sonnet | AI-allowed issues took 19% longer on average | It was an early-2025 snapshot of experienced maintainers, not evidence that all developers or current tools are slower |
| GitHub, 2025 | 202 valid submissions from 243 developers with at least five years of Python experience; fictional web-server API task | Copilot versus no Copilot; ten unit tests and a blind review phase | Copilot users were 53.2% more likely to pass all ten tests; several quality ratings were modestly higher | A bounded vendor-reported exercise does not predict long-term maintenance in a production repository |
| DORA, 2024 | Survey-based organizational analysis | Self-reported AI adoption and delivery measures | Each 25% increase in adoption was associated with 1.5% lower delivery throughput and 7.2% lower delivery stability | The figures are associations, not proof that AI caused the declines; DORA offered larger batches and insufficient testing as hypotheses |
| Anthropic, 2026 | 52 mostly junior developers learning the unfamiliar Trio Python library | AI-assisted coding versus hand coding on two features, followed by a quiz | Average quiz score was 50% with AI versus 67% without; AI users finished about two minutes faster, a nonsignificant difference | It measured short-term learning and comprehension, not production defect rates or long-term codebase quality |
Why the Microsoft result can coexist with slower repository work
Microsoft Research’s 26.08% figure is a completed-task outcome from three field experiments. The authors reported variation between experiments and found that less experienced developers had higher adoption and larger measured gains. A task-completion increase can therefore be genuine while saying nothing about whether the resulting changes are easier to maintain or safer to deploy.
METR studied a different problem: experienced developers making real changes in repositories they had contributed to for years. In that setting, understanding local abstractions, historical decisions, tests, and release constraints is part of the work. The AI-allowed group took 19% longer on average. METR cautioned against generalizing the finding; its February 2026 follow-up also said a later experiment had selection and time-measurement problems, so it could not reliably quantify the size of current speedups, although it believed tools probably helped more in early 2026 than in early 2025.

What the GitHub quality experiment does—and does not—show
GitHub’s controlled study offers evidence that assistance can improve outcomes on a tightly specified exercise. Among the 202 valid submissions, the Copilot group had a 53.2% greater likelihood of passing all ten unit tests. In a second phase, 25 developers reviewed anonymized submissions; each submission received at least ten reviews, for 1,293 reviews in total. GitHub reported 13.6% more lines per readability error, statistically significant rating differences for readability (3.62%), reliability (2.94%), maintainability (2.47%), and conciseness (4.16%), plus a 5% greater likelihood of approval.
Those results combine a fictional restaurant-review API, a fixed test set, experienced Python developers, and a vendor-run protocol. Passing ten tests demonstrates the behaviors those tests cover. It cannot demonstrate resilience to untested inputs, operational load, future changes, dependency failures, or the cost of explaining the code to a new maintainer.
How agents can increase output while quality or delivery suffers
Drafting becomes cheap, but context work remains expensive
An agent can generate a plausible implementation before it understands repository-specific constraints. Developers then pay for context discovery, debugging, integration, migration work, and review. In a greenfield exercise with a narrow specification, generation dominates the elapsed time. In a mature system, the surrounding work can dominate it.

Larger changes create review and release risk
Fast generation can encourage a developer to bundle more edits into one change. A larger diff is harder to inspect, test, revert, and attribute when something breaks. DORA’s 2024 report associated higher AI adoption with lower delivery throughput and stability and hypothesized that larger batches and insufficient testing could be mechanisms. The report’s 2025 discussion characterizes AI as an amplifier of existing organizational strengths and weaknesses, not as an isolated cause.

Tests cover behavior, not every quality attribute
Automated tests are essential, but a passing suite only establishes the assertions encoded in that suite. Reviewers still need to check error handling, security boundaries, data migrations, observability, performance, API compatibility, and whether the design fits the codebase. Tests and expert review are complementary checks, as the separate phases of GitHub’s study illustrate.
Speed can outpace understanding
Anthropic’s randomized learning trial found a short-term comprehension gap on an unfamiliar library: the AI group averaged 50% on a quiz versus 67% for hand coders. Qualitative analysis associated heavier delegation and AI-led debugging with poorer quiz outcomes, while requests for explanations and conceptual help were associated with stronger mastery. This does not prove that AI-generated production code is worse; it shows why a developer who cannot explain a change may be less able to maintain it.

Perceived speed can diverge from measured time
In METR’s early-2025 trial, participants expected a 24% speed-up and afterward estimated a 20% speed-up, even though measured completion took 19% longer. Familiarity with the tool and the visible speed of code generation can make the saved minutes feel larger than the total time spent on correction and integration.
How to evaluate an AI coding agent in your own team
Use a small, controlled rollout and record outcomes at the same unit of work. Do not use lines of code as the primary productivity metric.
- Define the work unit. Record whether each item is a greenfield feature, a bug fix, a refactor, documentation, or an issue in a mature repository. Record repository familiarity and developer experience.
- Record the tool context. Capture the agent, underlying model where visible, version, date, permissions, and whether the agent can run tests, edit multiple files, or access external systems. Results from an early-2025 assistant should not be presented as evidence about a later agent.
- Keep speed measures separate. Track elapsed active time, calendar lead time, completed items, and interruption or waiting time. A completed-task count cannot substitute for time-to-completion.
- Measure functional results. Record test passage, defect escapes, rollback or hotfix events, and requirements missed. Note which tests existed before the change and which were added afterward.
- Measure maintainability and review. Track diff size, review time, number of review rounds, rework, follow-up defects, readability concerns, and whether another engineer can explain the change.
- Measure delivery health. Watch deployment frequency, lead time, change-failure rate, recovery time, and stability. Compare small batches with large batches instead of averaging away the difference.
- Review learning and ownership. Ask developers to explain key design decisions, failure modes, and rollback steps. Use explanations as a safeguard, not as a punitive test.
- Compare like with like. Use a baseline period or a randomized assignment where practical. Separate novice and experienced developers, unfamiliar and familiar repositories, and bounded exercises from production issues.
Practices that preserve quality while using agents
Keep changes small and reversible
Ask for one coherent change at a time, require a focused diff, and merge in increments. Small batches reduce review surface and make regressions easier to localize.

Make the agent expose its assumptions
Before accepting code, require a summary of affected modules, invariants, error paths, tests run, and known uncertainties. Treat an unexplained assertion as a prompt for investigation, not as evidence.
Use tests as a floor, not a finish line
Run the existing suite, add tests for the requested behavior and failure cases, and inspect tests for meaningful coverage. Manually review security-sensitive paths, migrations, concurrency, and external-service boundaries.
Match delegation to developer knowledge
For unfamiliar libraries, ask for a conceptual explanation, a minimal example, and trade-offs before delegating implementation. The Anthropic trial suggests that explanation-oriented use may support mastery better than handing over debugging and design wholesale.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesProtect repository boundaries
Limit write access, require approval before destructive commands, and keep secrets and production credentials unavailable to the agent. A faster patch is not a gain if it expands the blast radius of an incorrect instruction.
Common measurement mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it misleads | Better practice |
|---|---|---|
| Counting lines or commits | Verbose code and fragmented work inflate the count | Pair task completion with elapsed time, defects, review effort, and delivery outcomes |
| Generalizing from a coding exercise | A fixed API task lacks repository history and operational constraints | Run a separate evaluation on real issues in the target codebase |
| Treating test passage as total quality | Tests cover only encoded behaviors | Add review of maintainability, security, performance, and future change cost |
| Ignoring batch size | A fast generator can produce a change too large to review safely | Set diff-size expectations and track review rounds and rollback events |
| Using self-reported speed alone | Perceived generation speed can hide correction time | Compare instrumented active time with participant estimates |
| Assuming correlation proves causation | Adoption may rise alongside other organizational changes | Label survey results as associations and test the proposed mechanism |
What conclusion is justified?
AI coding agents can make some developers complete more bounded tasks and can improve results on narrowly tested exercises. They can also slow experienced maintainers working in complex repositories, leave users with less understanding of unfamiliar code, or coincide with weaker delivery stability when teams increase batch size faster than their testing and review capacity.
The practical question is not whether an agent writes more code. It is whether a defined workflow delivers correct, understandable, operable changes with less total effort and acceptable risk. Measure that workflow end to end, keep changes small, require robust tests and human review, and treat output gains as a hypothesis to verify rather than as proof of better software.
