An AI checker can flag human-written text because it estimates authorship from patterns in the text; it does not observe who wrote it or how. Its result is a fallible signal, not proof that someone used an AI tool. The safest response is to check what the report actually measures and seek a fair human review under the relevant policy.
Why did an AI checker say my human-written essay was AI?
AI detectors compare writing with patterns or statistical signals associated with text they classify as AI-generated. When human writing resembles those signals, the detector can make a false positive: human-authored text incorrectly labeled as AI-generated. That label is an inference from the words, not direct evidence of the writing process.
One documented failure mode involves predictability. Stanford’s summary of a 2023 study by Liang and colleagues describes the tested detectors as typically using perplexity, a measure of how predictable text is to a language model. In that study, less varied vocabulary and sentence structure were associated with greater misclassification risk among the sampled non-native English writing. This explains a reported weakness in those tested systems; it is not a complete account of every commercial detector’s methods.

Can AI detectors give false positives, especially for non-native English writers?
Yes. Stanford HAI’s May 15, 2023 summary reported that the detectors tested in Liang et al.’s study classified 61.22% of the sampled TOEFL essays as AI-generated. Eighteen of 91 essays (19%) were flagged by all seven detectors, and 89 of 91 (97%) were flagged by at least one.

Those numbers describe that study’s samples, systems, and test conditions—not the current false-positive rate for every checker. The paper was submitted on April 6, 2023, and revised on July 10, 2023. Detector models and conditions can change, so the study should be read as evidence of a documented failure mode, not a universal score for today’s tools. Does an AI detector score prove I used ChatGPT?
No. A detector score does not conclusively identify who wrote a specific passage or establish that a particular AI tool was used. It is also distinct from a plagiarism finding. Turnitin says its AI percentage is independent of its similarity score, so an AI-writing indicator should not be treated as a similarity result. Turnitin’s report guidance cautions that its model may misidentify human-written, AI-generated, or AI-paraphrased text and says the result should not be the sole basis for adverse action against a student.

Why does a Turnitin report need context?
Turnitin’s rules and report boundaries are specific to its product; they should not be assumed to apply to other checkers.
- Low scores: Turnitin marks results from 0% to 19% with an asterisk because that range is less reliable.
- Minimum length: Its report requires at least 300 words of qualifying long-form prose.
- Text types: Turnitin says its model does not reliably detect poetry, scripts, code, bullet points, tables, or annotated bibliographies.
- Version and date: Turnitin’s model notes document updates through May 5, 2026. Earlier reports are not retroactively changed; obtaining a result under a new model requires resubmission. Interpret a result with its product, language, and report date in view. Turnitin’s model release notes describe these updates.
What should I do if my own writing was flagged?
- Read the report details. Check the product, report date, score, highlighted passages, and whether your text meets the detector’s stated eligibility conditions.
- Ask for a human review. If the result may affect a grade or disciplinary decision, request that the actual writing and circumstances be reviewed under the applicable institutional policy. A score alone is not proof.
- Share ordinary process evidence if available. Drafts, notes, or revision history can help explain how you developed the work. They are practical documentation, not a guarantee that a detector will change its result.
- Do not rewrite just to chase a score. No technique can guarantee a zero score, and changing writing to evade a detector does not establish authorship.
How should instructors interpret an AI-writing flag?
Treat a flag as a reason to examine the work, not as a verdict. Review the text and context, consider the tool’s stated limits, and follow the institution’s process before taking action. Turnitin itself advises against using its result as the sole basis for adverse action; other products require their own product-specific interpretation.
When assessing published detector claims or reports, check whether the comparison is meaningful: look at the model and version date, language and writer population, genre and text length, definition and threshold for a false positive, and whether the output is a document-level score or highlighted segments. Also distinguish independent evaluations from vendor guidance. The evidence cited here does not establish a like-for-like current ranking of commercial detectors or a universal accuracy number.
