AI-generated animal photos and videos can do more than pass off a fake rescue as real: they can make people doubt genuine footage, complicate lost-pet scams, and blur what authentic animal reporting looks like. The concern is serious, but the scale of the effect is not yet quantified.

What is at stake when cute animal content is synthetic?

Animal videos have often worked as a simple kind of internet pleasure: viewers see an animal and assume the moment happened. Convincing synthetic images weaken that assumption. A fabricated clip may be shared as entertainment, but it can also imply something about animal behavior, rescue work, or a real animal’s whereabouts.

Paresh Dave’s WIRED feature, published August 26, 2026, documents several ways that doubt can spill beyond obviously fake posts. It does not establish what share of online animal media is synthetic or quantify a broad effect on public trust, conservation, or fundraising. “Ruining” is an editorial judgment, not a measured rate.

How AI images can be used in a lost-pet scam

WIRED recounts Mibbby Butler’s experience after her cat, Brooklyn, went missing. A stranger sent an image that appeared to show Brooklyn and asked Butler to pay in advance for temporary care. Butler noticed that the image reproduced the pose and background from a photo she had posted, while text on a bottle in the image was garbled. She concluded it was AI-generated and did not pay.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Four months later, Brooklyn was still missing. Butler told WIRED she received another claim about the cat roughly once a month. That is her account, not evidence of a general scam frequency. If someone contacts you about a missing pet, treat an image as a lead to verify—not proof—and do not send money just because a picture looks convincing.

Why authentic animal documentation can also be doubted

We Animals, a nonprofit that documents animal harms, has faced viewers accusing its footage of being AI-generated. The organization says it bans photographers from using the technology. Its director of visual content, Victoria de Martigny, told WIRED that distrust could “open up the door to people questioning all of the work.”

We Animals expects to share behind-the-scenes footage and more information about its verification process, and plans to adopt technology that embeds provenance and editing history in media files. What fabricated rescue videos may imply about wildlife

Philosopher and animal activist Oscar Horta told WIRED that fake polar-bear rescue clips can be “ridiculous” and “unrepresentative of what it means to help animals.” His concern is that invented scenes of animals being rescued from fires or floods could lead viewers to question legitimate rescue methods and make future fundraising harder. Those are concerns about possible consequences, not measured effects.

An OECD.AI incident-monitor record describes hyperrealistic animal images as a source of misinformation that could contribute to unsafe interactions, injuries, conservation harm, and poorer research quality. The record explicitly says it should not be treated as the official views of the OECD or its member countries.

How to check whether an animal image or video is AI-generated

No single visual clue or detector can reliably classify every image from every source. In Butler’s case, garbled text was one clue alongside the image’s close match to a photo she had already posted. That kind of inconsistency can prompt further checking, but a polished image—or an odd detail—does not prove a file’s origin by itself.

  • Check the context. Look for the original post or source, and whether the person sharing the image provides a verifiable account of when and where it was made.
  • Compare it with known material. In a lost-pet case, compare the image with photos you have already shared and ask for specific information that could be independently checked.
  • Use image-identification features cautiously. WIRED reports that features in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Meta AI can identify whether an image was generated by the respective chatbot. Such checks are system-specific: they do not establish the origin of every image, and people may not upload every file or may face checking caps.
  • Look for provenance when available. A record of an image’s origin and editing history is a different approach from a visible label or a chatbot’s self-identification. Such records can help when present, but We Animals’ plan to adopt this technology is not evidence that all media currently carries interoperable, verifiable provenance.

Visible labels can tell viewers what a platform says about a post; embedded provenance and editing history can offer information about a file’s creation and changes. Neither approach is universal proof. WIRED’s reporting does not independently establish the accuracy, interoperability, or privacy performance of the tools and approaches discussed.

What the available numbers do—and do not—show

WIRED also described a Facebook group Butler spends time in, for artists opposing AI, as having nearly 300,000 members. That is a reported group-membership figure, not a survey of public opinion. Neither it nor the 175 We Animals photojournalists figure measures how much animal content online is synthetic or how large the resulting trust problem is.
