Businesses are expanding access to AI tools, and employers are signaling growing interest in agentic AI skills—but the evidence does not show that agent systems are already deployed everywhere or that AI is creating net jobs across the economy. Deloitte found broader workforce access to sanctioned AI tools, while a UK government survey found that many respondents plan to adopt agentic AI and that suitably trained talent is not keeping pace with demand.
Are businesses rapidly adopting AI?
Indicators point to faster AI access and use, but they measure different things. In a Deloitte survey of 3,235 business and IT leaders across 24 countries and six industries, conducted in August and September 2025, around 60% of workers had access to sanctioned AI tools, up from fewer than 40% one year earlier. That is a survey measure of access to approved tools—not a census of businesses, proof that workers use them routinely, or a measure of agentic AI running in production. Deloitte’s 2026 survey release also frames governance as part of the challenge as organizations move toward agentic AI.
Agentic AI is a narrower category than AI overall: the term refers to systems designed to pursue tasks through a degree of autonomous action, rather than only responding to a prompt. Access to a generative AI assistant, for example, does not by itself mean a company has deployed an agent to make decisions or take actions in operational systems.

There are credible signs of rising demand for AI-related capability, including interest in agentic AI, but the available figures are not interchangeable. The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s AI Labour Market Survey 2025 executive summary, published on 28 January 2026, says 57% of respondents plan to adopt Agentic AI within the next three years. That is a reported intention, not a count of completed deployments or a forecast of how many workers companies will hire.
#1 Best Overall
The same UK summary reports that the availability of suitably trained AI talent is not keeping pace with demand, and that 38% of businesses surveyed hire talent from outside the UK. Those findings describe the survey’s UK business context; they do not establish a shortage in every AI occupation or region.
Separate measures point to increased hiring activity for selected skills. LinkedIn’s AI Labor Market Update, dated 5 September 2025, reports year-over-year growth of more than 70% in job postings requiring AI-literacy skills and more than 25% in hiring of AI engineering talent. These are LinkedIn platform measures of postings and hiring in those categories, not counts of net new jobs across the labor market. They also do not isolate agentic AI roles.

What skills do employers need for AI roles?
The figures establish demand for AI literacy and engineering capability, but they do not provide a definitive job description for an agentic AI professional. A practical reading is that employers need people who can connect AI capabilities to business tasks and understand how systems should be governed. Depending on the role, that can mean technical development, evaluation, integration into workflows, or oversight. The cited surveys do not quantify demand for each of those specialties, so they should be treated as useful areas to investigate—not as a ranked list of the fastest-growing jobs.
For workers considering this field, distinguish skills that transfer across AI work from experience specific to agentic deployments. AI literacy and engineering are categories with reported hiring indicators; agentic AI adoption, by contrast, is still represented here by respondents’ plans. Ask prospective employers whether a role involves building systems, integrating them into products or operations, evaluating their outputs, or managing the risks and accountability around their use.

Rising demand for AI skills does not settle the broader employment question. A 27 March 2026 note from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, “AI Adoption and Firms’ Job-Posting Behavior,” distinguishes demand for AI skills from overall employment effects. It discusses prior work finding little or no significant effect of generative AI exposure on total jobs or job postings, while a cited study found statistically significant wage gains in AI-exposed occupations. Those findings concern the studies and populations discussed in the note; they do not establish the effect of every AI technology on all jobs.
The clearest conclusion is therefore narrower than “AI is creating jobs” or “AI is replacing workers.” Businesses are widening access to AI tools, survey respondents report plans for agentic adoption, and selected measures show increased demand for AI-related skills. The scale and timing of actual agent deployments, and their net effect on employment, remain distinct questions.
