Adding AI agents helps when they can make independent progress or contribute genuinely different evidence. It can do little—or make results worse—when one capable agent already solves the task, when each step depends on the last, or when coordination consumes time and compute that would otherwise go toward reasoning. The right question is not how many agents to deploy, but whether each added agent improves outcomes enough to justify its overhead.
Recent evaluations find no universal agent-count rule. They instead point to a practical test: compare candidate teams with a strong single-agent baseline on representative tasks, and measure quality alongside resource use and failure behavior.
What diminishing returns mean for an AI agent team
A multi-agent system assigns work to multiple AI agents, which may operate independently, report to a central coordinator, communicate with one another, or combine these approaches. Adding agents can improve performance if they cover separate parts of a problem or bring information that other agents lack. But the improvement usually does not grow in direct proportion to the team size.
Returns diminish when each new agent contributes less useful work than the previous one. At some point, the team may stop improving; beyond that point, extra handoffs, repeated reasoning, and integration mistakes can make it slower, more expensive, or less accurate than a single agent. This is a trade-off among four factors: the task’s parallelism, the capability of an individual agent, coordination overhead, and the information agents actually add.

That distinction matters because raw agent count is a poor measure of useful capacity. A team of similar agents can repeat the same line of reasoning, while a smaller team with complementary roles may surface independent evidence or catch a mistake. The benefit has to show up in the final task outcome, not just in the volume of messages or intermediate answers.
Start by measuring what one strong agent can do
Before building a team, establish how well a capable single agent performs on the target task. In a 2026 Nature Machine Intelligence study covering six benchmarks, the single-agent baseline was the strongest predictor in the study’s analysis of whether coordination helped or hurt. That makes it a useful first diagnostic: a team has more headroom to help when the baseline regularly fails than when it already handles most examples.
MIT Media Lab’s summary of the study describes an empirical capability-saturation threshold near 45% single-agent success in the tested setting. On SWE-bench Verified and Terminal-Bench, the threshold predicted the direction of the effect in 94% of the study’s validation configurations. Those comparisons used 20 task instances per configuration. This is a study-specific warning signal, not a universal cutoff: it should not be applied automatically to other benchmarks, models, prompts, or production workloads.
The practical implication is to measure the baseline on tasks that resemble deployment, not to rely on a broad model score or an informal impression. If one agent already succeeds on the target work, adding collaborators may have little room to improve quality. If it often misses important cases, a team might help—but only if agents can contribute independent work and the system can combine it reliably.

Task structure determines whether agents can help
Parallel work can create useful headroom
Parallelism means that parts of a task can be worked on separately without waiting for one another’s results. For example, a financial analysis might divide research across independent questions, then have a coordinator synthesize the findings. Google Research’s 2026 account describes gains on parallelizable tasks, and MIT Media Lab reports one evaluation in which centralized collaboration on Finance Agent raised mean performance from 34.9% for the single-agent baseline to 63.1%, an 80.8% relative increase.
That result shows that coordination can help in a suitable setting; it does not mean that every finance task, or every centralized team, will achieve the same gain. The useful property is that workers can pursue distinct parts of the problem and provide material the final decision-maker can integrate.
Sequential work can turn delegation into overhead
In a sequential task, a later step depends on an earlier step being correct. Splitting such work among agents may create handoffs without producing independent progress: one agent has to wait for another’s result, and an error early in the chain can be passed forward. MIT Media Lab reports that every tested multi-agent architecture underperformed the single-agent baseline on PlanCraft, a sequential planning benchmark, with relative declines ranging from 39% to 70%. The proposed explanation is that short, sequential work was unnecessarily delegated under a fixed budget.
Google Research makes the same broader distinction: systems can gain substantially on parallelizable work yet show diminishing returns or performance drops in more sequential workflows. Before assigning a task to multiple agents, map its dependencies. If step B cannot begin usefully until step A is complete, a single agent may be more efficient unless the second agent has a separate verification or information-gathering role.

Why adding agents can stop helping
Coordination takes budget away from reasoning
Agents need resources to divide a task, send and receive context, reconcile answers, and prepare a final result. Under a fixed compute budget, those interactions can leave less capacity for each agent to reason about the task. In the 2026 Nature Machine Intelligence experiments, the hybrid architecture used 44.3 turns compared with 7.2 for the single-agent architecture—6.2 times as many. Centralized and decentralized systems used 3.8 and 3.6 times as many turns as the single-agent system, respectively.
Those turn counts describe the tested configurations, not a general multiplier for the cost or latency of multi-agent systems. They do illustrate a design risk: a larger team’s apparent activity can rise faster than its useful contribution. Teams should therefore be evaluated with their actual message and compute budgets, rather than assuming that each additional worker is effectively free.
Similar agents can repeat evidence and blind spots
If agents use similar models, prompts, tools, and source material, they may arrive at the same answer for the same reasons. Agreement then provides less independent confirmation than it appears to. It can also reproduce a shared blind spot across the team.

The comparison is specific to those configurations, not a guarantee that two agents are always enough or that arbitrary differences improve results. Diversity is useful when it creates complementary, correct reasoning paths—not merely when agents have different labels or prompts.

Intermediate errors can spread
When one agent’s flawed result becomes input for others, the team can repeat or build on the mistake. MIT Media Lab reports trace-level error-amplification factors of 17.2 for independent systems and 4.4 for centralized systems in the study’s metric. These figures describe execution dynamics; they do not mean that independent systems’ final answers are 17.2 times as likely to be wrong, or centralized systems’ answers 4.4 times as likely.
The comparison suggests that coordination design can affect how errors travel through a system. A central reviewer may be able to inspect conflicting or unsupported intermediate claims before they reach the final answer. That is not proof that centralized coordination is universally safer or better: architecture performance varied by task, and review itself consumes resources.

The Nature Machine Intelligence study evaluated 260 configurations across six benchmarks, five architectures, and three LLM families. It compared single-agent, independent, centralized, decentralized, and hybrid systems while holding prompts, tools, and compute budgets constant as it varied coordination structure and model capability. This controlled scope makes the comparisons informative, but the results remain benchmark- and configuration-specific.
The study also fitted a model intended to help predict which architecture would perform best. Its cross-validated R² was 0.373 across the six benchmarks, rising to 0.413 when capability was measured with a task-grounded metric. It selected the best-performing architecture in 87% of held-out configurations within the evaluated domains. That is evidence of useful within-domain prediction, not demonstrated reliability on entirely new domains.

The overall lesson is therefore conditional. Coordination can be valuable, and task structure, agent capability, topology, and information diversity all matter. But no reported threshold, architecture, or team size is established as best for every deployment. Treat findings such as the 45% signal as a reason to investigate, then validate the candidate design on the work it will actually perform.
How to decide whether another agent is worth adding
Use a controlled comparison rather than adding workers until the system seems more thorough. A practical evaluation should keep the tasks and resource limits consistent across the single-agent baseline and candidate teams, then examine both outcomes and how the team reached them.
- Build a representative task set. Include the kinds of cases the system will handle, including cases with sequential dependencies, independent subtasks, and ambiguous evidence. Define what counts as a correct or useful result before comparing designs.
- Record the strongest single-agent baseline. Use the same task inputs, relevant tools, and an explicit resource budget. Track task quality and failures so that the team is being compared with a real alternative, not a deliberately weak baseline.
- Map dependencies and assign distinct roles. Identify which work can proceed independently and which steps depend on earlier outputs. Add a worker only when it has a concrete contribution—for example, researching a separate question or checking a specific class of errors.
- Compare suitable coordination designs. Test the simplest plausible team structure as well as alternatives that fit the task. An independent arrangement, central coordinator, or hybrid system may behave differently; do not assume that one topology wins everywhere.
- Track quality, resource use, and failure propagation together. Record final task quality, total compute or tool use, latency, interaction volume, and whether an unsupported intermediate claim spreads. More messages or more completed subtasks are not themselves evidence of a better result.
- Check whether workers add independent information. Inspect their evidence and reasoning, not just whether their final answers differ. If workers mostly repeat one another, test fewer agents or redesign roles to seek complementary information.
- Keep only the design that earns its overhead. Add agents when the gain in the target outcome justifies additional compute, coordination, and review. Re-run the comparison when models, tools, prompts, or task mix change, since those changes can alter the baseline and the value of collaboration.
This is a practical decision procedure inferred from the studies’ controlled comparisons and reported overhead and error measures, not a universal recipe established by a separate experiment. Its purpose is to make the trade-off visible before team size becomes a proxy for performance.
