A video doorbell usually goes offline for one of five reasons: the home internet or router is down, Wi-Fi is too weak at the entrance, network credentials or settings changed, the doorbell is not receiving reliable power, or the device is outside its operating limits. Start by checking whether other devices are offline, then test the doorbell’s signal, network settings, power and temperature. Restart equipment before attempting a factory reset.
First determine whether the outage is local or widespread
The fastest way to avoid an unnecessary reset is to identify the scope of the failure. Connect a phone or laptop to the same Wi-Fi network, with cellular data turned off where applicable, and try to load several websites. Also check another connected product in the home.
| What you observe | Most likely layer | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| The doorbell alone is offline | Doorbell signal, power, credentials, temperature or hardware | Signal at the front door, battery or wiring, recent network changes and the exact model’s requirements |
| Several Wi-Fi devices are offline | Router, modem, home power or internet service | Power, router status lights, modem connection and an ISP outage |
| The app opens but live video will not load | Unstable Wi-Fi, internet congestion or a doorbell that has not completed reconnection | Signal and bandwidth near the door, then restart the network and doorbell |
| Video history has gaps while the doorbell sometimes works | Intermittent connectivity, power interruptions, weak coverage or temperature | Observe when the gaps occur and correlate them with router changes, heavy network use, weather and battery level |
Google’s Nest guidance specifically separates a single camera or doorbell problem from a whole-home connectivity problem. An internet-service outage can prevent a Nest product from connecting even when the local Wi-Fi network still appears to be running.
1. Check the modem, router and internet service
Test internet access on the same network
Use a second device on the doorbell’s Wi-Fi network. If that device cannot reach the internet, do not begin by changing the doorbell’s settings; repair the network path first. A router can broadcast a Wi-Fi name while its modem has lost the ISP connection, so a phone showing a Wi-Fi icon does not prove that internet service is available.

Restart the network in the equipment maker’s order
- Check that the modem, router and any network switch or mesh base unit have power.
- If your equipment instructions do not specify another method, unplug the modem and router for about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first, then wait for its connection lights to become steady.
- Reconnect the router and wait for its Wi-Fi and internet indicators to settle.
- Give the doorbell time to reconnect, then open its app and test live video.
Ring’s support instructions use a 30-second modem-and-router power cycle and then suggest checking signal strength and internet speed. Follow the instructions for your own equipment if they differ. If multiple products remain offline after the restart, check the ISP’s outage information or contact the provider. No doorbell setting can repair an upstream service outage.
2. Test Wi-Fi where the doorbell is mounted
Why a fast home connection can still fail at the door
Wi-Fi performance in the living room does not describe the radio conditions at the front door. Distance, exterior walls, floors, metal, furniture, appliances and other electronics can weaken or interfere with the signal. Google’s official troubleshooting guidance states: “Your camera or doorbell might lose its connection if it’s too far from your Wi-Fi router.”
Run a speed or connectivity test on a phone or tablet while standing beside the mounted doorbell. Treat the result as a clue rather than proof: a speed test measures that phone’s connection at that moment, not necessarily the doorbell’s radio quality or the stability required for video uploads.
Use a temporary relocation test
- If it is safe and practical, bring the doorbell close to the router for a short test. For a hardwired unit, do not disconnect wiring unless the manufacturer’s instructions and electrical safety procedures permit it; use a temporary location only when the model supports this safely.
- Reconnect or power the unit in the temporary location and watch whether live video and event uploads become reliable.
- If the nearby test works but the mounted position does not, coverage or obstruction is a plausible cause. Improve the signal path rather than repeatedly resetting the device.
Improve the path before buying equipment
Move the router to a more central, open position if possible. Keep it away from large appliances, enclosed cabinets and dense obstructions. If you use a mesh system, place a node where it still receives a strong signal from the main router and can reach the doorbell; placing a node at the edge of an already weak signal can simply extend a poor connection.

Google warns that a badly connected extender can create connection problems. If the doorbell struggles only when it connects through an extender, move the extender closer to the main router, test again, or temporarily disable it to compare the direct-router connection.
3. Reconnect after a Wi-Fi, router or ISP change
A new Wi-Fi name, password, router, broadband provider or security setting can leave a doorbell trying to use credentials that no longer exist. The device may appear offline even though other products have already been updated.
Use the manufacturer’s app to change the network
Look for a device settings or network option in the doorbell’s app. Ring documents this path as Devices → select the device → Device Health → Network → Reconnect or Change Network. Your product may use different labels or require a nearby phone, a QR code or a setup button.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Confirm the Wi-Fi name exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Enter the current password rather than the former password saved in the app.
- Complete any pairing or authentication step shown by the app.
- Wait for the doorbell to report that it is connected before closing the app.
- Open live video and trigger a test event to confirm both viewing and upload.
Arlo notes that products need to be connected to the new network after a password or ISP change. App steps vary by model and software version, so use the instructions for the exact doorbell rather than assuming that another model’s menu is identical.

Do not change Wi-Fi bands blindly
There is no universal “best” band for every video doorbell. Ring’s support guidance suggests trying a 2.4 GHz network instead of 5 GHz for its devices, because 2.4 GHz can travel farther through obstacles. That is a Ring-specific recommendation, not a rule for all manufacturers. Check your model’s specifications before splitting networks, disabling a band or forcing a device onto one.
4. Check battery, wiring and environmental conditions
Battery-powered doorbells
- Check the charge level in the app and inspect whether the unit responds to a button press or status indicator.
- Recharge the battery with the supplied or manufacturer-approved method. Arlo advises fully charging a wire-free doorbell when its LED stays off and it does not respond.
- Consider recent cold weather. Google notes that low temperatures can reduce battery life and affect charging.
- If the battery repeatedly falls rapidly after a full charge, compare the behavior with the manufacturer’s battery, temperature and activity guidance before treating it as a Wi-Fi fault.
Hardwired doorbells
Confirm that the circuit is on and that the transformer or power supply matches the doorbell’s requirements. A wired unit can appear to have a network problem when it is browning out or restarting because its supply is inadequate. Do not infer a voltage requirement from another product.
For example, Arlo’s support guidance for the Wired Video Doorbell AVD1001 specifies 16–24 V AC. That range applies to that named model, not to all wired video doorbells. Check your own manual or ask a qualified electrician before changing a transformer or working on household wiring.
Temperature limits
Extreme heat or cold can cause disconnects, charging problems or automatic shutdowns. Google advises checking whether the device is outside its operating temperatures. Arlo lists an outdoor operating range of −4°F to 113°F (−20°C to 45°C) for the doorbells covered by its support page; treat that as Arlo-specific guidance, not a universal limit. Let a device return to its rated range and retry before concluding that the radio has failed.

5. Restart the doorbell, then retest
After network and power checks, restart the doorbell using the method documented for its model. Some units have a restart command in the app; others require a controlled power cycle or a button sequence. If the network was also unstable, restart the modem, router and relevant mesh or extender equipment according to their instructions.
- Finish the network or power correction first.
- Restart the doorbell without changing unrelated settings.
- Wait for the status to change from offline to connected.
- Test live video, a motion or button event, and playback of the resulting clip.
- Observe the device for several hours if the original symptom was intermittent.
A restart is reversible and preserves the device’s account association and stored history in most systems. It is therefore a safer next step than erasing the device.
6. Factory-reset only as a last resort
Resetting can clear corrupted configuration, but it also destroys useful state. Google warns that resetting a Nest camera or doorbell permanently deletes its video history. Arlo says a reset removes its doorbell from the account and requires setup again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before using a reset button or reset command:
- Save any clips you need.
- Confirm that you can sign in to the associated account.
- Record the exact model and gather its setup instructions.
- Have the current Wi-Fi name and password available.
- Make sure the battery is charged or the wired power fault is resolved.
Resetting a device that still has no power, no internet service or an unusably weak signal will not solve the underlying problem; it can instead add a complete setup task to the original fault.

Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Pattern | Likely explanation | Best next check |
|---|---|---|
| Offline immediately after changing the Wi-Fi password | Stored credentials are obsolete | Use the app’s network reconnection flow with the new credentials |
| Offline only at the mounted location, but reliable near the router | Coverage, obstruction or poorly placed extender | Reposition the router or mesh node and retest the path |
| Doorbell and several other devices fail together | Power, router, modem or ISP outage | Check equipment lights, restart the network and verify service status |
| Offline during cold weather or when the battery is low | Battery capacity or charging is affected by temperature | Warm and fully charge the battery within the model’s limits |
| Wired unit restarts or loses video under load | Incorrect, interrupted or inadequate power | Verify the model’s electrical requirement and have wiring checked safely |
| Disconnects when many people are streaming or uploading | Competition for available Wi-Fi or internet bandwidth | Reduce competing traffic temporarily and improve coverage or network capacity |
| Problems begin after adding an extender | Extender has a weak backhaul or the doorbell is attaching to it poorly | Move the extender nearer the main router, compare with it disabled, and follow compatibility guidance |
When a mesh system or extender is appropriate
A compatible mesh Wi-Fi system or range extender is reasonable only after the signal test points to a coverage problem. If the router has no internet connection, the battery is dead, the wired supply is wrong, credentials are incorrect or the doorbell itself is failing, adding another radio will not fix the cause.
Choose placement based on the test, not the doorbell’s appearance
Place a mesh node or extender between the main router and the doorbell, but close enough to the router to maintain a strong backhaul. A unit mounted beside the front door but unable to communicate reliably with the router can make the situation worse. Test live video and event uploads after placement, not just the signal icon shown in an app.
Check compatibility and band behavior
Confirm that the accessory supports the doorbell’s Wi-Fi standards, security mode and required band. If the manufacturer recommends 2.4 GHz for the model, ensure the accessory can provide that band. If the doorbell supports only particular channels or security settings, follow its documentation instead of applying a generic router guide.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Prevent recurring dropouts
- Keep the router and mesh nodes in open locations rather than cabinets or behind large appliances.
- Leave enough battery charge for the expected weather and activity level; monitor the app for declining capacity.
- Record the doorbell model and its power specification so a future transformer or battery replacement is not guessed.
- After changing the Wi-Fi name, password, router or ISP, reconnect the doorbell deliberately instead of waiting for it to find the network.
- Review whether outages coincide with heavy streaming, cloud backups or other high-bandwidth activity.
- Install an extender only when a measured coverage gap justifies it, and test the extender’s own connection.
- Keep the manufacturer’s current app and support instructions available; labels and setup flows can change with software updates.
When to escalate
Contact the ISP when multiple devices cannot reach the internet after the modem and router restart. Contact the doorbell manufacturer when the exact model remains offline with confirmed internet service, adequate signal, correct credentials, stable power and acceptable temperature. For hardwired products, use a qualified electrician for transformer or household-wiring questions rather than experimenting with voltage.
Provide support with the model number, app version if shown, the time the problem began, whether other devices were affected, recent router or password changes, battery or power observations, temperature conditions and the result of the near-router test. Those details identify the failing layer faster than repeating a factory reset.
The practical order that minimizes risk
- Check another device to determine whether the outage is home-wide or limited to the doorbell.
- Restore modem, router or ISP service if the wider network is down.
- Test Wi-Fi beside the doorbell and look for walls, appliances, distance or extender placement problems.
- Reconnect the doorbell after any Wi-Fi name, password, router or ISP change.
- Verify battery charge, wired power and temperature against the exact model’s instructions.
- Restart the network and doorbell, then test live video and a new event.
- Use a compatible mesh node or extender only when the evidence points to coverage.
- Save needed history and factory-reset only when the manufacturer’s guidance makes it the remaining appropriate step.
This sequence separates an internet outage from a radio-coverage problem, a configuration mismatch and a power or environmental fault while keeping destructive actions until the end.
