A receipt can reproduce every character and number correctly yet still make a false claim. The key question is not only whether the text is intact, but whether its labels, scope, state, and environment refer to the right underlying object. In a software project, that can mean checking which commit a hash identifies, which files a test covered, which repository Git used, and which machine produced a numerical result.
What does it mean for a receipt to be wrong?
A receipt is evidence for claims: that a particular change belongs to a particular round, that a check covered a stated set of files, or that a result was reproduced under stated conditions. Verifying the receipt’s wording proves only that the wording was copied faithfully. It does not prove that the claims describe the right commit, round, branch state, file set, repository, or machine.
The useful question is: “Which object was this verdict taken over — and is that the object the sentence is about?” That distinction matters whenever someone relies on a check, report, or posted record to decide what happened.

An identifier can be real and still be attached to the wrong event. The essay describes a receipt that paired hash f5a9bb8 with round R431, although the hash was reported as the merge for R427. It also describes a re-take called one round before R426 that actually belonged to R418. These are not character-copying errors; they are relationship errors between a label and the thing it names.

Verify identity and order independently
- Resolve a commit hash to the commit it identifies, rather than trusting the round label beside it.
- Check sequence claims against the relevant record; do not infer that “one before” or “next” is correct because the surrounding text looks consistent.
- For branch-state claims, distinguish the remote or merge event from the local reference. In the reported case, the receipt claimed the branch was deleted at merge, while the local ref still pointed to the named commit.
The essay’s central lesson is to verify each claim, not merely the text and figures carrying those claims.
How do you know which files a check actually covered?
A checklist can name a narrow set while the command it invokes checks something broader. In the essay’s project-specific account, a checklist described two Markdown files, but linkgate.py --check reportedly examined all tracked Markdown carriers. The author reported 41 tracked carriers at main and 65 on the branch filing the checklist item. Those are observations from that project, not independently verified counts or general statistics.

The reported command emitted a set: line. That output is important: a PASS without its file set does not establish that the check covered the files readers assume it covered. When recording a check, include the exact scope and count alongside the result.
Why can the same Git-based check produce a different scope?
The essay reports a case where a Git-based check run against an exported archive resolved files using the repository enclosing that archive. In the author’s examples, one enclosing repository produced set: 2 tracked markdown carriers and PASS; another produced set: 0 and NOT RUN. The checkout produced set: 41 and broken=0.

This is a reported case study, not a guarantee about every tool or environment. Its practical implication is to establish which repository supplied the result. An exported tree may not carry the repository context the checker expects, and a plausible status alone may conceal a scope mismatch.
- Record whether the check ran in a checkout or an exported tree.
- Capture the repository context used for resolving tracked files.
- Keep the check’s reported set and count with its PASS, failure, or not-run status.
When can a correct numerical result fail to reproduce exactly?
The essay reports a pinned build and committed evidence whose numeric leaves differed across machines: 321 of 526 values differed by one last-place unit, with a maximum absolute difference of 4.2e-16. These are the author’s reported measurements; they were not independently reproduced. They describe a particular project case, not a universal rate of numerical disagreement.

Exact equality can depend on the machine that produced a record. A tolerance therefore needs an explicit interpretation: either evaluate it against the producing machine’s result, or declare a tolerance wide enough to accommodate the observed spread. A number without its production environment and comparison rule can appear precise while leaving the verdict ambiguous.

- Claims covered: the specific identity, sequence, state, or result being asserted.
- File set and count: the actual files examined, not merely the files named in a checklist.
- Repository context: the repository from which Git or another scope-sensitive tool resolved the set.
- Machine and environment: the conditions that produced numerical results, plus the tolerance or equality rule applied.

Its author, displayed by DEV Community as howcani howcani, puts the principle this way: “the read-back a posted receipt owes covers every claim it makes — a coordinate, a state, a count — as well as its text, because a text verified character for character from the destination verifies no claim at all.”
