A used PlayStation Now listing is not necessarily comparable to a new PlayStation Plus subscription. Sony said PlayStation Now would stop being offered as a standalone service when the redesigned PlayStation Plus launched in 2022. That makes the listing’s exact product, region, term, and redemption eligibility essential to understanding its price—and Sony’s announcement alone cannot explain a particular seller’s asking price.
What changed to PlayStation Now?
On March 29, 2022, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that PlayStation Now would transition into the new PlayStation Plus offering and would no longer be available as a standalone service when the new service launched. Sony also said existing PlayStation Now customers would move to PlayStation Plus Premium without an increase to their then-current subscription fees at launch. That was a statement about the transition, not a promise about today’s prices or third-party listings. Sony’s announcement

The new PlayStation Plus was described as three plans: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Sony said Premium included streaming benefits in markets where cloud streaming was available. So a listing using the old PlayStation Now name may refer to a legacy code or account rather than a new standalone subscription that can simply be bought on the same terms.
Why might a used listing look more expensive?
The available facts do not establish why any particular used listing costs more than a new offer. Sony’s announcement includes no resale listings, current comparison prices, or evidence that a specific legacy code or account is valid and redeemable. A seller’s price by itself does not prove scarcity, a markup, region restrictions, or that the item works.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Before treating the prices as an inversion, identify what each offer actually includes. A new subscription and a used code or account are not automatically equivalent. Compare the same market and currency, subscription duration, tier and benefits, redemption eligibility, and date observed.
- Market and currency: Check the country or region where the offer is sold and where it can be redeemed.
- Term: Compare the same subscription duration rather than a monthly offer with a longer prepaid term.
- Entitlement: Establish whether the offer is a subscription, code, or account, and which plan or benefits it provides.
- Eligibility: Confirm whether the code can still be redeemed for the intended account and region. Sony’s announcement does not confirm any individual listing’s validity.
- Observation date: Prices can only be compared meaningfully when both offers are observed at a known time.
What did PlayStation Plus Premium cost at launch?
Sony published the following PlayStation Plus Premium launch prices in 2022. They are historical figures, not current rates; Sony said local pricing could vary. Compare only within the same market and term.

| Market | Monthly | Quarterly | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | US$17.99 | US$49.99 | US$119.99 |
| United Kingdom | £13.49 | £39.99 | £99.99 |
| Euro area | €16.99 | €49.99 | €119.99 |
| Japan | ¥1,550 | ¥4,300 | ¥10,250 |
These launch figures do not establish what a new subscription costs now, nor do they show that a used PlayStation Now listing offers the same plan, term, or redemption rights. Sony’s announcement is useful for understanding the transition, but not for validating a seller’s price or product.
How to assess a specific listing
- Read the listing description carefully. Determine whether it offers a code, an account, or something else, and what subscription or duration the seller claims it includes.
- Check the redemption region and eligibility. If the seller does not clearly state where and how the item can be redeemed, the offer cannot be reliably compared with a new subscription.
- Match the benefits and term. Compare like with like: the same region, duration, tier, and included benefits.
- Compare prices observed on the same date. Use current offers for the relevant market; do not treat Sony’s 2022 launch prices as current prices.
- Do not infer validity from the name or price. The fact that a listing says “PlayStation Now” does not establish that the code or account is usable.
What Sony’s announcement does—and does not—confirm
Sony’s March 2022 announcement confirms the planned end of PlayStation Now as a standalone service and the transition of existing subscribers to PlayStation Plus Premium under the launch terms it described. It does not explain an individual used listing’s price, verify that listing’s entitlement or redemption status, or establish current subscription pricing. Those questions require details about the specific offer and market.
